Abstract Objective: To report a case of premature ovarian failure (POF) associated with an ovarian sex cord tumor with annular tubules. Design: Case report. Setting: Reproductive endocrinology unit in a tertiary academic center. Patient(s): A 20-year-old woman with POF. Intervention(s): Biopsy of the rudimentary ovary by laparoscopy. Main Outcome Measure(s): Protocol for POF investigation and histological study of the ovarian sample. Result(s): An ovarian sex cord tumor with annular tubules was detected in the rudimentary right ovary. Conclusion(s): The rare ovarian sex cord tumor with annular tubules, which may be hormonally active, was detected in a case of POF.

The role of dispositional and social factors in Argentinian and Spanish women's sexuality

This study examines the role of sociocultural and dispositional factors in the sexual expressions of young Argentinian and Spanish women. Three hundred young women self-evaluated their sexual practices, sexual orientation, and relationships. Results reveal differences in women's sexuality based on societal and dispositional variables. The latter seem to play a more important role in those sexual behaviors that are normative in Hispanic traditions, whereas gender dissimilarity is more relevant when these behaviors are socially censured. Therefore, women's sexuality in Hispanic traditions, such as in Argentina and Spain, seems to be more complex than past studies reported.

Motives and Agency in Forced Marriage among the Urban Poor in Tanzania

Using the method of third-person elicitation and 171 interviews in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, I examine one form of forced marriage, ‘marriage on the mat’ (ndoa ya mkeka). In it, girls’ parents use the normative pressure of Islamic norms to circumvent the groom’s lack of consent to the marriage and promote their daughter’s future economic security. Premarital sex and forced marriage, rarely examined together, are often causally linked and provide strong motives for parents to resort to ndoa ya mkeka. Here, we report the results of a Polish adaptation of the Multidimensional Sexual Well-being Scale (MSWBS) for older adults. The MSWBS is a short self-report scale for assessing the five dimensions of an individual's sexual well-being: frequency of caressing, sexual intimacy, sexual compliance, sexual satisfaction, and sexual distress. The aim of our adaptation was to examine the utility of the scale in a country with conservative views on the sexuality of older people, which will help health care providers and researchers to better understand the sexual needs of older people. Animal movement is fundamental for ecosystem functioning and species survival, yet the effects of the anthropogenic footprint on animal movements have not been estimated across species. Using a unique GPS-tracking database of 803 individuals across 57 species, we found that movements of mammals in areas with a comparatively high human footprint were on average one-half to one-third the extent of their movements in areas with a low human footprint. We attribute this reduction to behavioral changes of individual animals and to the exclusion of species with long-range movements from areas with higher human impact. Background: Gender differences in chronic liver disease (CLD) have been partially investigated. To extend the present knowledge, we evaluated 12,263 patients with CLD enrolled in two national surveys (9997 in 2001 and 2557 in 2014). Methods: The two surveys prospectively recruited patients aged ≥ 18 referring to Italian liver units throughout the country using a similar clinical approach and analytical methods. A new insect ovicide (Ov. 165049), 4-methoxy-benzoic acid propargylester, synthesized by BASF (Ludwigshafen) was tested on Oncopeltus fasciatus and Manduca sexta. In the case of O. fasciatus also the effects on last-instar larvae and adult bugs were studied. Topical application of 40 μg/larva dissolved in acetone caused a mortality exceeding 50% at day 1 after treatment. The few animals which developed into imagines did not reproduce. A treatment with 4 μg/larva had no severe impact on metamorphosis and reproduction. Adult O. fasciatus received doses of 40 μg, 20 μg and 4 μg per animal.
