Este artículo presenta un análisis etnográfico de los procesos de securitización urbana que están teniendo lugar en un barrio del centro histórico de Valencia. Trazamos una economía política de la securitización urbana en la escala local, fijándonos en el papel desempeñado por una pluralidad de actores entre los que encontramos vecindario, movimientos urbanos, cuerpos policiales e instituciones locales. Because of its parasitic habits, reproduction costs of the common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) are mostly spent in pre-laying activities. Female costs are limited to searching host nests and laying eggs, whereas, males spend time in performing intense vocal displays, possibly with territorial purpose. This last aspect, together with a sexual plumage dimorphism, points to both intra- and inter-sexual selections operating within this species. Abstract Microcalorimetry was used to study the effects of graded hypoxia and anoxia on two species of insects that differ in their tolerance of anoxia. Locusts (Locusta migratoria) can survive an atmosphere of pure nitrogen for not more than 4 h (at room temperature), whereas hawk moths (Manduca sexta) can recover from more than 24 h of anoxia. To produce graded hypoxia, air and pure nitrogen were mixed and this mixture was passed through the cells of a twin calorimeter equipped with circulation cells. How important female choice is for the evolution of male secondary sexual characteristics is controversial. Two field and one laboratory experiment, using the pied flycatcher, were performed to test the female choice aspect of sexual selection. In addition, non-manipulative data from 5 years are presented. The observational data suggest a slight preference for dark males by females but in field experiments in which males had territories at random sites (i.e. they did not choose a territory) or the colour of concurrently arriving males was altered, there was no preference for darker ones. Covalent modificaition of juvenile hormone binding proteins by photoaffinity labeling: An unexpected gel shift effect

The 32 kD juvenile hormone binding protein (JHBP) and two 80 kD proteins in larval Manduca sexta hemolymph were labeled with [3H]FDK, a photoaffinity analog of methyl farnesoate (MF). The labeling could be completely displaced by a 30-fold excess of either MF or JH II, demonstrating that [3H]FDK binds specifically to the JH binding sites of the 32 kD JHBP and the 80 kD proteins. In addition, a high molecular-mass protein was labeled with [3H]FDK; labeling could be displaced by excess MF but not by JH II, demonstrating the selectivity in binding MF. The 32 kD JHBP also appeared to weakly bind the potent juvenoid, methoprene, at the JH binding site. Covalent modification by [3H]FDK induced a …
