Enumerating higher-dimensional operators with on-shell amplitudes

2020

We establish a simple formula for the minimal dimension of operators leading to any helicity amplitude. It eases the systematic enumeration of independent operators from the construction of massless non-factorizable on-shell amplitudes. Little-group constraints can then be solved algorithmically for each helicity configuration to extract a complete set of spinor structures with lowest dimension. Occasionally, further reduction using momentum conservation, on-shell conditions and Schouten identities is required. A systematic procedure to account for the latter is presented. Dressing spinor structures with dot products of momenta finally yields the independent Lorentz structures for each heli…

Nonlocal symmetry for QED

1993

We demonstrate that QED exhibits a previously unobserved noncovariant, nonlocal symmetry. Some consequences are discussed.

Abelian charges in a nonabelian Yang-Mills theory from the stratification of the space of gauge potentials

1992

Abstract The Abelian charges in a non-Abelian Yang-Mills-Dirac theory arising from the reduction of the structure group are studied. They are defined by the concept of the stabilizer gauge transformations. Their properties are investigated. The relationship between the whole class of stabilizers and the stratification of the space of gauge potentials is given. The effect of the spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism on these charges is discussed.

The Higgs Mechanism and Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking

2002

As is well known all gauge bosons of a pure Yang-Mills theory are necessarily massless. This is so because any ad-hoc mass term such as $$ m_i^2 A_\mu ^{(i)} A^{(i)\mu } or \sum\limits_{ik} {M_{ik} } A_\mu ^{(i)} A^{(k)\mu } $$ is incompatible with local gauge invariance. It is saidthat W. Pauli hadd evelopednonab elian gauge theory for himself (or knew about it from the work of H. Weyl and O. Klein) before the work of C.N. Yang and R. Mills (1954) but dismissedit because he hadrealizedthat the gauge particles wouldall be massless. As there was only one massless spin-1 particle known at the time (the photon) nonabelian gauge theory was to be rejectedon physical grounds. The few facts that w…

X(5) critical-point symmetries in 138Gd

2011

International audience; The lifetimes of low-lying transitions in 138Gd have been measured using the recoil-distance Doppler-shift technique. The resultant reduced transition probabilities have been compared to X(5) critical-point calculations to assess the potential 'phase-transitional' behaviour of 138Gd. The X(5) symmetry describes the first order 'phase transition' between sphericity, U(5) and an axially deformed nuclear shape, SU(3). Although a high degree of correspondence is observed between the experimental and theoretical excitation energies, the large uncertainties of the experimental B(E2) values cannot preclude contributions from either vibrational or rotational modes of excitat…

Clusters and the quasi-dynamical symmetry

2008

The possible role of the quasi-dynamical symmetry in nuclear clusterization is discussed. Two particular examples are considered: i) the phases and phase-transitions of some algebraic cluster models, and ii) the clusterization in heavy nuclei. The interrelation of exotic (superdeformed, hyperdeformed) nuclear shapes and cluster-configurations are also investigated both for light, and for heavy nuclei, based on the dynamical and quasi-dynamical SU(3) symmetries, respectively.

Symmetry and Electronic Structure of Noble Metal Nanoparticles and the Role of Relativity

2004

High resolution photoelectron spectra of cold mass selected Cu_n-, Ag_n- and Au_n- with n =53-58 have been measured at a photon energy of 6.42 eV. The observed electron density of states is not the expected simple electron shell structure, but seems to be strongly influenced by electron-lattice interactions. Only Cu55- and Ag55- exhibit highly degenerate states. This is a direct consequence of their icosahedral symmetry, as is confirmed by density functional theory calculations. Neighboring sizes exhibit perturbed electronic structures, as they are formed by removal or addition of atoms to the icosahedron and therefore have lower symmetries. Gold clusters in the same size range show complet…

Perturbativity and mass scales in the minimal left-right symmetric model

2016

The scalar sector of the minimal Left-Right model at TeV scale is revisited in light of the large quartic coupling needed for a heavy flavor-changing scalar. The stability and perturbativity of the effective potential is discussed and merged with constraints from low-energy processes. Thus the perturbative level of the Left-Right scale is sharpened. Lower limits on the triplet scalars are also derived: the left-handed triplet is bounded by oblique parameters, while the doubly-charged right- handed component is limited by the h → γγ, Zγ decays. Current constraints disfavor their detection as long as WR is within the reach of the LHC.

Perspectives

2004

We discuss a special case of formation of axisymmetric shocks in the accretion flow of ideal gas onto a Schwarzschild black hole: when the total energy of the flow is negative. The result of our analysis enlarges the parameter space for which these steady shocks are exhibited in the accretion of gas rotating around relativistic stellar objects. Since keplerian disks have negative total energy, we guess that, in this energy range, the production of the shock phenomenon might be easier than in the case of positive energy. So our outcome reinforces the view that sub-keplerian flows of matter may significantly affect the physics of the high energy radiation emission from black hole candidates. …

Symmetries and Effective Vertices

2015

When facing the computation of more realistic processes, the calculations can become lengthy very fast as the number of Feynman diagrams grows. Before starting the calculation process the problem should be reduced to its minimal form. Here we will present an example of how to reduce the number of calculated diagrams for a given process (which in this case will be a Higgs-like scalar decay to two photons through a charged scalar loop) using gauge symmetry.
