Perfluorocarbons–graphene oxide nanoplatforms as biocompatible oxygen reservoirs
2018
Abstract 3-Pentadecafluoroheptyl,5-perfluorophenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole (FOX) molecules were attached onto a graphene oxide (GO) via a facile aromatic substitution in alkaline environment. This approach allows achieving high degree of functionalization under mild conditions. The covalent attachment of perfluoromoieties onto GO lamellae was confirmed by spectroscopic analyses. The performance of these nanoplatforms (GOF) as oxygen reservoirs was assessed at different concentrations and temperature. The results revealed that under physiologic conditions GO and FOX synergistically operate for increasing oxygen uptake and release, either from a thermodynamic and a kinetic point of view. Even at low…
Forest road planning to improve tourism accessibility: a comparison of different methods applied in a real case study
2022
Forest road planning with the available tools, e.g. PEGGER and GIS, still requires a lot of time of an expert, and the designed roads are not guaranteed to be efficient in terms of the cost or suitability of the road. In this article, we propose a novel Genetic Algorithm (GA) based method for forest road planning. To do so, each road is represented as a sequence of fixed and variable (control) points. A novel objective (fitness) function is defined based on the length, gradient, and suitability of the roads (individuals). The proposed algorithm is applied to the Arasbaran forest area and the resulted roads are compared with PEGGER-designed roads regarding length, Bachmund index, accessibili…

Gypsum and giant canes in the Sicilian traditional architecture
2014
Giant cane is a natural, eco-friendly and low-cost product that is very common in the Mediterranean area. As far as the Sicilian tradition is concerned, it has been combined with gypsum, a material with the same qualities. Reeds and gypsum have been used as a traditional composite material that is able to join and improve their peculiarities of lightness and insulation, and to utilize the bearing skill of the hardiest reeds and the fire protection and moulding skills of gypsum. This combination of poor and easy-to-find materials has been used very frequently in Sicilian traditional constructions. It is possible to see roofs with inclined floors; some wooden floors with reeds and gypsum used…
Approche responsable pour le patrimoine : coopération, participation, documentation / Approccio responsabile al patrimonio architettonico: cooperazio…
2014
COMPARISON OF CRIMSON FOUNTAINGRASS AND DISS FIBRES AS AGGREGATES FOR CEMENT MORTARS
2019
The use of natural fibres in cement composites is an expanding research field as their use can improve the mechanical and thermal behavior of cement mortars and reduce their carbon footprint. In this paper two different wild grasses, i.e. Pennisetum Setaceum, also known as crimson fountaingrass, and Ampelodesmos Mauritanicus, also called diss, are used as source of natural fibres for cement mortars. The principal aim is to evaluate the possibility of using the more invasive crimson fountaingrass in place of diss inside cement based vegetable concrete. The two plants’ fibres have been characterized by means of electron microscopy, helium picnometry; moreover, the thermal conductivity of fibr…
NATURALLY AVAILABLE SOLUTIONS FOR BUILDING NEW METABOLIC TERRITORIES
2021
Building new metabolic territories is a proactive way of responding to the challenges and precariousness of the contemporary city. Byintegrating solutions inspired by new scientific advances in urban ecology, cities are able to address some of the environmental threats. Many European cities are implementing alternative nature-based solutions to protect their health and tackle water scarcity, land consumption and climate change, to increase citizens' well-being. Wellbeing and health (Agenda 2030) are the most important analytical parameters for measuring the results and impacts of environmental project actions. With this in mind, the study presents a "nature-action" project hypothesis for wh…
Sistemi costruttivi tradizionali in gesso nell’architettura siciliana
2020
Chalks outcrops characterize all the central-western territory in Sicily. They are different in types and extension and tangibly mark the presence of the well-known sulphurus chalky series. In the same areas it is possible to see several traditional buildings built, even in their structures, using gypsum, an material which is unusual in other contexts. In some cases the chalk outcrop makes up even the base of a building. This text describes different kinds of walls, floors, vaults and flooring where gypsum is the main material.
TRADITION AND INNOVATION IN HOSPITALITY: Palermo, International Design Competition
2009
There is an on-going debate today on the subject of the relationship between city and architecture; this cultural and disciplinary backdrop requires in-depth studies on a variety of themes and a great number of disciplinary contributions. Over the centuries Man has left his mark on the land and in order to fully understand the wide- ranging modifications, it could be important to assess architecture specifically built for hospitality; in particular, its conceptual, spatial, functional and technological peculiarities need to be considered. These have undergone gradual changes over the course of time, in a continuing attempt to try to guarantee a high level of quality for guests. The project …
Land Healthcare Resilience and Technology
2020
The Covid 19 pandemic and emergency has highlighted the precarious conditions in urban and areas and has bettered opportunities offered by smaller towns and inland areas in which the healthy atmosphere, sparser population and sustainable relational system represent alternative ways of life, guaranteeing physical space and health controls without actually entailing social distancing and isolation. This is even more crucial for the weaker elements, of any age and condition, for whom a different model of living embodies prudence and prevention. The marginality of services represents a limitation on the possibility of transforming villages and small towns into alternatives with regard to qualit…
