Electromagnetic shielding efficiency in Ka-band: carbon foam versus epoxy/carbon nanotube composites

The wide application of microwaves stimulates searching for new materials with high electrical conductivity and electromagnetic (EM) interference shielding effectiveness (SE). We conducted a comparative study of EM SE in K a -band demonstrated by ultra-light micro-structural porous carbon solids (carbon foams) of different bulk densities, 0.042 to 0.150  g/cm 3 , and conventional flexible epoxy resin filled with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in small concentrations, 1.5 wt.%. Microwave probing of carbon foams showed that the transmission through a 2 mm-thick layer strongly decreases with decreasing the pore size up to the level of 0.6%, due to a rise of reflectance ability. Collapsible intact soil stabilisation using non-aqueous polymeric vehicle

Abstract This paper presents the results of an experimental study that had the goal of understanding the effects of treatment with polyethylene glycol (PEG)/nanolime mixtures on collapsible soil behaviour. In a previous study, the use of pure PEG offered a good improvement in the stability of collapsible soil, but the stabilisation effect only lasted for a limited time. Failure Map of Composite Laminate Mechanical Joint

The aim of this research is to investigate the pin/hole contact stress of a composite laminate and failure modes when submitted to tensile bearing tests. The limit loads and failure modes are evaluated as a function of pin diameter and hole position. Analyzing the joint geometry effect on the fracture mechanisms, a failure map is obtained, identifying three regions of typical failure modes of mechanically fastened joints. A theoretical approach is proposed to identify the field of each fracture mode to obtain a simple experimental methodology to support the design of a particular joint laminate. Graphene Oxide Carboxymethylcellulose Nanocomposite for Dressing Materials.

Sore, infected wounds are a major clinical issue, and there is thus an urgent need for novel biomaterials as multifunctional constituents for dressings. A set of biocomposites was prepared by solvent casting using different concentrations of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and exfoliated graphene oxide (Exf-GO) as a filler. Exf-GO was first obtained by the strong oxidation and exfoliation of graphite. The structural, morphological and mechanical properties of the composites (CMCx/Exf-GO) were evaluated, and the obtained composites were homogenous, transparent and brownish in color. Optimization of two-step techniques engineered for the preparation of polyamide 6 graphene oxide nanocomposites

Abstract Different processing conditions to achieve polyamide 6 (PA6)-graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites were investigated. GO was pre-dispersed in PA6 by three different solvent-based methods and, further, melt processed to prepare nanocomposites at two different loading levels, namely 2 and 5 wt.%. The evolution of rheological and mechanical properties was analyzed by investigating eventual changes in the microstructure and polymer crystallinity, aiming at providing a detailed processing-structure-properties relationship for these systems.

The influence of Al doping on the photocatalytic activity of nanostructured ZnO: The role of adsorbed water

Abstract Al doped ZnO nanoparticles (labeled as x% A-ZnO, x = 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5) were synthesized by a simple sol-gel method, characterized and tested as photocatalysts for the degradation of a model compound under UV-light irradiation. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and photoelectrochemical analysis have been performed to evidence their optical and electronic behavior. Absolute crystallinity and photocatalytic activity of brookite TiO2 samples

Abstract This study reports a method to determine the absolute crystallinity of partly crystalline brookite TiO2 photocatalysts. A natural, a commercial and various home-prepared brookite powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and nitrogen adsorption measurements. The absolute crystallinity was calculated from the ratio between the full width at half maximum intensity of the (121) X-ray diffraction peaks of the brookite samples and the (111) peak of CaF2 as internal standard. Imbibition of Femtoliter-Scale DNA-Rich Aqueous Droplets into Porous Nylon Substrates by Molecular Printing

This work presents the first reported imbibition mechanism of femtoliter (fL)-scale droplets produced by microchannel cantilever spotting (μCS) of DNA molecular inks into porous substrates (hydrophilic nylon). Differently from macroscopic or picoliter droplets, the downscaling to the fL-size leads to an imbibition process controlled by the subtle interplay of evaporation, spreading, viscosity, and capillarity, with gravitational forces being quasi-negligible. In particular, the minimization of droplet evaporation, surface tension, and viscosity allows for a reproducible droplet imbibition process.
