Advances in Research for Biomimetic Materials
2018
Smart surfaces and materials can play a significant role in intelligent, adaptive and responsive envelopes because of these intrinsic properties. The environmental question and energy efficiency in which the construction sector is involved, is in a process that can not be interrupted and that puts researchers and designers in front of a scientific and design challenge in which it is necessary to contribute to find different ways of study and experimentation on new materials and constructive languages, ranging from the application, to the structural, design and molecular, to mention the main ones. The development of technologies is helping architects of the “biomimetic current” to recreate c…

Reversibilità e Sostenibilità dell'Architettura per l'emergenza: nuove proposte per abitazioni temporanee
2009
REVERSIBILITY AND SUSTAINABILITY IN THE FIRST AID CONSTRUCTIONS:NEW PROPOSALS FOR TEMPORARY BUILDINGS. Summary. This contribution is the result of the experiences carried out in recent years near the Project and Building Construction Department, of the University of Palermo, Italy, in cooperation with students from the degree in Architecture, concerning studies about emergency building. Particularly, on new solutions to build temporary dwellings focusing on those aspects of temporary planning which still need to be solved, i.e. the use of recyclable and biodegradable low environmental-impact materials being consistent with the current need of technological and environmental sustainability. …
Performance of Earth Bricks Supplemented by Nanoparticles and their Application in Architecture
2017
The potential for architecture offered by natural materials in terms of comfort, reduction of embodied energy and energy-saving in the operational phase, dictates in-depth research that might highlight advantages and contribute to improving their characteristics. This research focuses on earth bricks and, in particular, a type of brick made from unfired clay, known as adobe. The aim of the research is to verify improvements in performance of adobe with the aid of nanotechnology. The adobe mixture was prepared with water, soil (from Sicily) and LAPONITE® as a stabilizer. The adobe bricks were subjected to tests of resistance to compression and flexion, resistance to abrasion, capillary absor…
TRANSIZIONE AMBIENTALE E SVILUPPO SOSTENIBILE
2021
This paper explores the issues related to the principles of eco-sustainability by proposing a case study of sustainable regeneration in Sicily, whose intervention choices were made with respect for the environment and local traditions. General guidelines: reduction of energy consumption; use of recycled and recyclable materials; improvement of thermo-hygrometric conditions. Programming is based not only on performance control, but on an idea of global sustainability based on the use of urban greening systems.
“TECHNOLOGICAL PROJECT” AND HERITAGE ENHANCEMENT (in CICOP)
2010
Recovering our building heritage has a fundamental role regarding renewal process, since it constitutes one of the strategies for urban and territorial balance. Building recovery, in the broadest sense of the word, means the renewal of precious constructions which have decayed or outdated but could be renewed and/or requalified. In other words, recovery is a subject which solves the probable damages of a building, trying to bring it back to its original living conditions; otherwise referring to the intervention which confronts the damages provoked by the weather and, more often than not, by the absence of maintenance. In any case, technological innovation can intervene systematically basing…
