Redox and Photochemistry of Bis(terpyridine)ruthenium(II) Amino Acids and Their Amide Conjugates – from Understanding to Applications
2014
Invited for the cover of this issue is the group of Katja Heinze at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany. The cover image shows the bis(terpyridine)ruthenium(II) amino acid [Ru(4′-tpy-COOH)(4′-tpy-NH2)]2+ (tpy = 2,2′;6′,2″-terpyridine), illustrating some of its multifaceted optical and redox chemical properties as well as highlighting its potential applications in light-to-energy conversion and energy-to-light conversion schemes.
Electrochemical study on (NN)Fe3 (CO)9 ((NN) = 2,3-diazanorbornene) and related compounds. A new example of activation of carbon monoxide replaceme…
1985
Abstract The compound (NN)Fe 3 (CO) 9 ( 1 ) in tetrahydrofuran undergoes two reversible one-electron reduction processes in cyclic voltammetry at the platinum electrode. A rapid electron transfer-catalyzed reaction occurs when 1 is reduced in the presence of L (L = P(OMe) 3 ) and this gives (NN)Fe 3 (CO) 8 L ( 2 ), quantitatively. Only an electron-induced nucleophilic substitution is observed for compound 2 under the same conditions, yielding (NN)Fe 3 (CO) 7 L 2 , which undergoes a similar reaction but with much lower efficiency, to give (NN)Fe 3 (CO) 6 L 3 .
Influence of Thermal Annealing on the Thermodynamic and Mass-Transfer Kinetic Properties of d- and l-Phenylalanine Anilide on Imprinted Polymeric Sta…
1999
An investigation of the material, chromatographic, thermodynamic, and kinetic properties of thermally treated (i.e., annealed) polymeric stationary phases imprinted with l-phenylalanine anilide (l-PA) was carried out. The imprinting procedure of the solid phase used in this study was the same as for the untreated imprinted stationary phase studied previously. However, after polymerization, these new stationary phases were treated at elevated temperatures (50, 120, 140, and 160 °C) for 24 h. The treatment at 120 and 140 °C led to a larger decrease in the retention of l-PA than that of d-PA. The polymer treated at 160 °C could no longer resolve the d,l-PA racemate. The heat treatments were ac…
Continuous fractionation and solution properties of PIB. II. CPF optimization
1987
The quality of polymer fractionation depends on the choice of the mixed solvent as well as on the particular conditions of operating the continuous countercurrent extraction. With a polyisobutylene (PIB) sample of medium molecular weight Mw = 98,400 g/mol and U = (Mw/Mn) − 1 = 1.4 plus the mixed solvents toluene/2-butanone (TOL/MEK) and n-heptane/2-butanone (HEP/MEK) (both giving comparably good fractionation in equilibrium experiments), possible ways to optimize the CPF were tested. The mixed solvent HEP/MEK turns out to be superior to TOL/MEK for kinetic reasons. Due to the larger gap between its density and that of the pure polymer, the coexisting phases can still move through the column…
Experimental and theoretical investigations of the contact ion pairs formed by reactions of the anions [(EPR2)2N]- (R = (i)Pr, (t)Bu; E = S, Se) with…

Reactions of the sodium salts [(EPR(2))(2)N]Na(TMEDA) (R = (i)Pr, (t)Bu; E = S, Se) with the iodide salts [(TePR(2))(2)N]I (R = (i)Pr, (t)Bu) in toluene produce the mixed-chalcogen systems [(EPR(2))(2)N][(TePR(2))(2)N] (6b, E = Se, R = (t)Bu; 6c, E = S, R = (t)Bu; 7b, E = Se, R = (i)Pr; 7c, E = S, R = (i)Pr). Compounds 6b, 6c, 7b, and 7c have been characterized in solution by variable-temperature multinuclear ((31)P, (77)Se, and (125)Te) NMR spectroscopy and in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The structures are comprised of contact ion pairs linked by bonds between Te and S or Se atoms. For the tert-butyl derivatives 6b and 6c, the anionic half of the molecule is co…
Anomalous diffraction profiles of alkali-halide-alkali-cyanide mixed crystals.
1986
The x-ray diffraction profiles of four mixed alkali halides-alkali cyanides have been studied. At the threshold concentration where the systems change over from ferroelastic ordering to the glass state, the profiles are highly unusual. The diffracted intensity of transverse scans along the cubic axes follows $I\ensuremath{\sim}\mathrm{exp}(\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}|\ensuremath{\xi}|)$, where $\ensuremath{\xi}$ is the reduced wave vector, measured from the line center.
Light induced processes in thin films of indandione type organic molecules
2007
The optically induced switching of material properties is important for investigations of opto-electronic effects and optomechanical properties. Investigated organic materials contain chromophore dipole consisting of acceptor and donor groups bridged by a delocalized p-electron system. Both calculations and experimental data show a reversible highly dipolar photoinduced intra molecular charge transfer in indandione type molecules (DMABI) accompanied by change of the sign and the value of the dipole moment. Investigations of optical properties of thin host-guest polymer films show that the photoinduced process of DMABI is related to the photoinduced switching between two equally stable state…

Synthesis of Hyperbranched Polyglycerol in a Continuous Flow Microreactor
2007
Hyperbranched polymers have been synthesized in a microreactor for the first time, employing the known ring-opening multibranching polymerization of glycidol. Microreactors are well-known to be beneficial for highly exothermic reactions because of their capability to enhance mass and heat transfer due to short diffusion pathways and large interfacial areas per volume. The characteristics of the microstructured reaction system were utilized to engineer a continuous flow process for the preparation of well-defined hyperbranched polyglycerols with molecular weights up to 1,000 g/mol. Increased flow rates, as well as the use of highly polar solvents, led to the partial formation of very narrowl…
