Weekly cisplatin with or without imatinib in advanced chordoma: A retrospective case-series analysis from the Italian Rare Cancers Network
2021
Background: To report on a retrospective case-series analysis of weekly cisplatin (wCDDP) as a single agent or combined with imatinib (wCDDP/I) in patients with advanced chordoma treated within the Italian Rare Cancer Network. Methods: Adult patients with a diagnosis of advanced, brachyury-positive chordoma, treated from April 2007 to October 2020 with wCDDP or wCDDP/I were retrospectively identified. Imatinib was withheld at the same time as wCDDP. Response according to Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors, overall survival (OS), and progression-free survival (PFS) were analyzed. Results: Thirty-three consecutive patients were identified (wCDDP as front-line n = 8 [24.2%]; wCDDP as…
A randomised factorial trial of sequential doxorubicin and CMF vs CMF and chemotherapy alone vs chemotherapy followed by goserelin plus tamoxifen as …
2005
The sequential doxorubicin → CMF (CMF = cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, fluorouracil) regimen has never been compared to CMF in a randomised trial. The role of adding goserelin and tamoxifen after chemotherapy is unclear. In all, 466 premenopausal node-positive patients were randomised to: (a) CMF × 6 cycles (CMF); (b) doxorubicin × 4 cycles followed by CMF × 6 cycles (A → CMF); (c) CMF × 6 cycles followed by goserelin plus tamoxifen × 2 years (CMF → GT); and (d) doxorubicin × 4 cycles followed by CMF × 6 cycles followed by goserelin plus tamoxifen × 2 years (A → CMF → GT). The study used a 2 × 2 factorial experimental design to assess: (1) the effect of the chemotherapy regimens (CMF vs A …
A new method for the placement of brachytherapy probes in paranasal sinus and nasopharynx neoplasms
1999
Abstract Purpose: In afterloading therapy, the exact placement of the applicator is crucial for the result of radiotherapy. A deviation of few millimeters from the target leads to a significant reduction of radiation energy to the tumor. Methods and Materials: We present a new method using a computer-assisted device for three-dimensional placing of afterloading probes based on CT scans that allows for the exact placement. Results: Target points have been reached with an accuracy of 0.6 mm. Since 1991 we have used this technique for 24 clinical applications in 11 patients with recurrent neoplasms in the region of the paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx for palliative treatment. Conclusions: Th…
Participation in adjuvant clinical breast cancer trials: does study participation improve survival compared to guideline adherent adjuvant treatment?…
2012
Abstract Adjuvant clinical trials (CTs) usually compare a standard treatment regime versus an innovative new substance or regimen. Participation in CT however, is available for only few patients and exclusion criteria are usually very strict. Therefore we used an unselected patient cohort to investigate the following questions: (1) Is participation in adjuvant CT associated with improved survival in breast cancer (BC)? (2) What is the impact of guideline conform therapy on survival in BC compared to that of participants in CT? Does guideline-conform adjuvant treatment provide an equal impact? Material and methods This German retrospective multi-centre cohort study included 9433 patients wit…
Spontaneous Resolution of Delayed Suprachoroidal Hemorrhage in the Single Eye Following Needling in Congenital Glaucoma
2017
Suprachoroidal hemorrhage (SCH) is a rare, but potentially vision-threatening event with poor long-term visual prognosis. At present, there is disagreement whether surgical intervention or conservative treatment is superior in the management. We report on a case of spontaneous resolution of severe SCH after needling procedure in the only eye of a young patient with congenital glaucoma.A 43-year-old woman with congenital glaucoma was scheduled for bleb needling in her only eye. Preoperative best-corrected visual acuity was 20/40 and intraocular pressure 20 mm Hg. On the third postoperative day, she developed a massive delayed SCH with appositional (kissing) choroidal bullae and visual acuity…
Teprotumumab for patients with active thyroid eye disease: a pooled data analysis, subgroup analyses, and off-treatment follow-up results from two ra…
2020
Thyroid eye disease manifests inflammation and treatment-resistant proptosis and diplopia. Teprotumumab, an insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor inhibiting monoclonal antibody, was approved in the USA on Jan 21, 2020, on the basis of two randomised trials. In this analysis we evaluated the short-term and long-term aggregate response to teprotumumab from the two trials, focusing on proptosis and diplopia. We analysed integrated outcomes and follow-up data from two randomised, double-masked, placebo-controlled, multicentre, trials done at a total of 28 academic referral tertiary specialised centres offering joint thyroid eye clinics, or orbital clinics or practices, or both, in Europe and the…

Radiation dose distribution in functional heart regions from tangential breast cancer radiotherapy
2015
Abstract Background and purpose To analyze the distribution of individually-determined radiation dose to the heart and its functional sub-structures after radiotherapy in breast cancer patients treated in Germany during 1998–2008. Material and methods We obtained electronic treatment planning records for 769 female breast cancer patients treated with megavoltage tangential field radiotherapy. All dose distributions were re-calculated using Eclipse with the anisotropic analytical algorithm (AAA) for photon fields, and the electron Monte Carlo algorithm for electron boost fields. Based on individual dose volume histograms for the complete heart and several functional sub-structures, we estima…
Emotional eating and food intake after sadness and joy
2013
Do people with a high score on a scale for eating in response to negative emotions also show high food intake in response to positive emotions?. We studied these effects in 60 female students that were preselected on the basis of extreme high or low scores on an emotional eating questionnaire. Using a between subject design we experimentally tested the difference in food intake following a mood induction designed to induce joy or sadness (the joy vs. sad mood condition). The high and low emotional eaters did not differ in their food intake, but emotional eating significantly moderated the relationship between mood condition and food intake. Whereas low emotional eaters ate similar amounts a…
Mechanical–biological waste treatment and the associated occupational hygiene in Finland
2004
A special feature of waste management in Finland has been the emphasis on the source separation of kitchen biowaste (catering waste); more than two-thirds of the Finnish population participates in this separation. Source-separated biowaste is usually treated by composting. The biowaste of about 5% of the population is handled by mechanical-biological treatment. A waste treatment plant at Mustasaari is the only plant in Finland using digestion for kitchen biowaste. For the protection of their employees, the plant owners commissioned a study on environmental factors and occupational hygiene in the plant area. During 1998-2000 the concentrations of dust, microbes and endotoxins and noise level…
