Microwave-assisted conversion of novel biomass materials into levulinic acid

2018

Levulinic acid is considered one of the most important platform chemicals. It is currently produced mainly from lignocellulosic biomasses. However, there are also other abundant biomass materials, which could be used as raw materials for levulinic acid production. In this work, levulinic acid was produced from two novel biomasses in the presence of Brønsted (H2SO4) and Lewis acid (CrCl3·6H2O or AlCl3·6H2O) catalysts. The studied materials were carbohydrate-rich potato peel waste and sporocarps of the fungus Cortinarius armillatus. Reaction conditions, i.e., time, temperature, H2SO4, and Lewis acid concentrations, were studied by utilizing full 24-factorial experimental designs. Microwave ir…

Caur neiespējamām praksēm pretī morālei un ētikai: Zero Waste Latvijā

2019

Zero …

'We have a solution': Delivering on the promise to take national responsibility for nuclear waste management

2022

We examine the realization of the umbrella promise to assume national responsibility for the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel. Three case studies are used to illustrate how Finland delivers on the promise to take care of its own nuclear waste - a promise that has greatly contributed to the legitimacy of nuclear power in Finland. The article shows how this promise is being challenged by new competitors, business visionaries, and the public. The case studies illustrate the tensions between those who made the promise and the actors who interpret and mobilize the promise for varying purposes and under changing circumstances. We investigate techno-scientific promises by looking at debates ab…

Tracer migration in crystalline rock : application to geological barriers of nuclear waste storage

2016

This work deals with transport of radionuclides in the geosphere. The subject is investigated through characterisation of water conducting fractures, determining of rock transport properties and development of new methods for characterising geological samples. Here, as is often the case, radionuclide transport is investigated indirectly by characterising the structures, where the transport takes place, and directly by measuring transport properties in the gas phase. First water conducting fractures of three different types and the rock matrix surrounding them were analysed through rock samples from Olkiluoto. The analysis was done using X-ray tomography, the 14C-PMMA autoradiography techniq…

Pircēju rīcību ietekmējošie faktori, izvēloties beziepakojuma preču veikalus Latvijā.

2021

Bakalaura darba “Pircēju rīcību ietekmējošie faktori, izvēloties beziepakojuma preču veikalus Latvijā” autore Alisa Lavrenčuka izvirzīja sekojošu darba mērķi – balstoties uz teorētiskajiem aspektiem, iedzīvotāju aptaujas un veikala īpašnieku intervijas rezultātiem, izpētīt pircēju rīcību ietekmējošus faktorus, izvēloties beziepakojuma preču veikalus “Burka”, “Zemes draugs” un “Ber un sver”, atklāt trūkumus un sniegt priekšlikumus to novēršanai. Bakalaura darbs sastāv no trīs nodaļām. Pirmajā nodaļā darba autore izpēta pircēju rīcības būtību, pircēju rīcību ietekmējošos faktorus, pircēju rīcības modeli un pirkšanas lēmumu pieņemšanas posmus, kas ir svarīgi aspekti, lai veiksmīgi izprastu pir…

RILEM TC 279 WMR round robin study on waste polyethylene modified bituminous binders: advantages and challenges

2022

inter-laboratory experiments were designed to evaluate the impact of plas- tic waste blended directly in bitumen and to assess the properties, using conventional and advanced bituminous binder testing. The blends tar- geted 5% of plastic waste in 95% bitumen, using two types of polyethy- lene (PE) primary (pellets) and secondary (shreds) waste. The experiments showed that the addition of PE waste to bitumen does not alter the chem- istry of the bitumen, the blending is physical. The DSR results indicate a strong dependency on the testing temperature as at low temperatures the composite material bitumen and PE behave both elastically whereas, at higher temperatures, the bitumen becomes visco…

Utilization of steelwork waste heaps –Recovery of metals by acidic bioleaching

2018

The paper presents the results of preliminary research conducted by the acid bioleaching method, with the use of autochthonous Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria and museum strains of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans, on recovery of metals contained in selected metallurgical waste. The material contained mainly oxidative minerals Fe2O3, SiO2, and Al2O3 as well as lead, zinc, copper and nickel sulphides. Concentrations of the key metals were respectively: zinc 3.46 %, lead 13.8 %, copper 0.4 %, nickel 0.06 %. The works were carried out on a small laboratory scale. The results confirmed that the method is effective. The most effective process of bacterial leaching in the heap was for zinc –…
