Pedigree verification with multiple candidate parents using Pedverif software

2010

Species like sheep and beef cattle are commonly raised in large herds and often on pasture with multiple sires joining the females for unrecorded natural insemination. This leads to offspring with multiple candidate parents and therefore uncertain parentage. Twins or triplets can be from multiple sires as well. Pedigrees from such populations are often problematic and need proper verification. The Pedverif computer program is able to verify normal pedigrees as well as pedigrees with multiple candidate parents.

Feeding Dairy Ewes with Fresh or Dehydrated Sulla (Sulla coronarium L.) Forage. 2. Effects on Cheese Enrichment in Bioactive Molecules

2022

Sulla is a tanniferous legume species largely used as fresh or preserved forage in the ruminants’ diets. Due to its content in polyphenols with antioxidant activity, especially condensed tannins (CT), fresh sulla forage (FSF), when eaten by ruminants, is able to enrich animal products with antioxidant molecules and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) that are beneficial for consumers’ health. Dehydration represents a valid alternative to haymaking to preserve these properties also in periods when FSF is unavailable. In this research, the effects of ewes’ diets based on sulla hay (SH), pelleted dehydrated sulla forage (DSF) or FSF were evaluated on cheese physico-chemical tr…

Effect of the dam’s feeding regimen on the meat quality of light suckling lambs

2010

In order to verify the effect of the introduction of concentrates without GMO risk and at low aflatoxin risk in the diet of grazing milk ewes on the quanti-qualitative production of meat of their milk-fed light lambs, two trials were carried out - in Sicily, on 32 Comisana lambs, slaughtered at 49±4 days (trial 1); and in Sardinia, on 28 Sarda lambs, slaughtered at 31±4 days(trial 2) - comparing the following grazing dams’ feeding regimes: High stocking rate + Organic (barley – tickbean or pea) Concentrate (HO); High stocking rate + Conventional (maize-soybean) Concentrate (HC); Low stocking rate + Organic Concentrate (LO); Low stocking rate + Conventional Concentr…

The relationship between feed intake behaviour with intramuscular fat, cholesterol and fatty acid composition in pork

2011

The aim of this study was to investigate the phenotypic relationship between feed intake (FI) characteristics with intramuscular fat, cholesterol and fatty acid composition in pork. Data were available on 202 Duroc barrows. Intramuscular fatness was positively correlated with a higher percentage of saturated (SFA) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), a lower percentage of polyunsaturated (PUFA), omega-3 (ω3) and omega-6 (ω6) fatty acids, and a lower ω6/ω3 and P:S ratio (p < 0.05). Faster growth resulted in a higher level of SFA and a lower level of ω3 fatty acids (p < 0.05). Increased FI, residual feed intake (RFI) and feed intake time (TIME) and a decreased feed intake frequency (FREQ) …

Use of the o-Phthalaldehyde and N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine the Evaluation of Milk Proteins

1991

Abstract o -Phthalaldehyde and N-acetyl-Lcysteine are used in the determination of milk proteins. Three procedures are proposed and compared. One of them is based on reaction of o -phthalaldehyde and N-acetyl-Lcysteine with the intact proteins and the two others on reaction of the reagents with the released amino acids after total acid hydrolysis of the protein samples. When the protein sample is hydrolyzed, calibration is performed either with a hydrolyzed protein standard or with isoleucine. A procedure for the measurement of the degree of enzymatic hydrolysis of milk proteins without separation of the unhydrolyzed protein, which makes use of the same reagents, is also described. In all c…

Putative multiadhesive protein from the marine spongeGeodia cydonium: Cloning of the cDNA encoding a fibronectin-, an SRCR-, and a complement control…

1998

Sponges (Porifera) representing the simplest metazoan phylum so far have been thought to possess no basal lamina tissue structures. One major extracellular matrix protein that is also a constitutive glycoprotein of the basal lamina is fibronectin. It was the aim of the present study to identify the native protein from the marine sponge Geodia cydonium and to isolate the corresponding cDNA. In crude extracts from this sponge protein(s) of Mr of Ý230 and Ý210 kDa could be visualized by Western blotting using an anti-fibronectin [human] antibody. By PCR cloning from a cDNA library of G. cydonium we isolated a cDNA comprising one element of fibronectin, the type-III (FN3) module. The cDNA (2.3 …

Effect of storage and composting on the properties and degradability of cattle manure

1995

Abstract Stockpiling or thermophilic composting of cattle manure resulted in significant carbon losses of 17% and 26.4% and relative nitrogen gains of 25% and 32.7% for stockpiled and composted manure, respectively. As a consequence, C/N ratios decreased with increasing time of storage or composting. However, neither the pH nor the mineral nitrogen and organic carbon contents of the 0–50 μm fractions were significant indicators of the transformations of these materials. The degradability of the manure was measured by incubation for 2 weeks in a brown calcareous soil, following 1 week of preincubation. The biodegradation index (BI) or the proportion of CO 2 released from the amended soil in …

Salt tolerance of Rana temporaria: spawning site selection and survival during embryonic development (Amphibia, Anura)

1999

AbstractSpawning site selection of Rana temporaria is dependent on the salinity of the water. In the nature reserve 'Salzwiesen von Münzenberg' (Germany) the frogs avoided increased conductivity values, Cl- ion concentrations and salinities and selected lower values for spawning. In the laboratory Gosner stages 20/21 to 22/23 were more sensitive to sodium than the earlier G stages 8 to 20/21 (exposition for 72 h) though they were exposed for the shorter time period of 24 h. The 'no observed effect concentration' (NOEC) between G stages 8/9 and 20/21 was 648 ppm (3350 μS, 2.2‰ salinity) for Na+ and 1872 ppm (6500 μS, 4.0‰ salinity) for K+. The NOEC between G stages 20/21 and 22/23 was 1490 p…
