Travelling Strings, Beams, Panels, Membranes and Plates
2013
In this chapter, we will introduce in a general manner some of the most common models for axially travelling materials, which will be used in the rest of the book. We will introduce the linear models of travelling strings, panels, and plates. It will be assumed that the material is thin, i.e. its planar dimensions are much larger than its thickness. We will work in the small displacement regime, that is, with linear models approximating the behaviour of the system near the trivial equilibrium. As is well known in the theory of elasticity, this approximation allows for a decoupling of the in-plane and out-of-plane components in the dynamics of the system. We will concentrate on small out-of-…

CLINICAL AND NEUROPHYSIOLOGICAL FINDINGS IN 47 LONG-TERM SURVIVORS OF CHILDHOOD MALIGNANCIES TREATED WITH VARIOUS DOSES OF VINCRISTINE
1978
ABSTRACT 96 long-term survivors of cancer in childhood were reexamined after succesful therapy. In 49 who had not been treated with VINCRISTINE (VCR) reflex status and motor conduction velocities were normal. In contrast, 47-after treatment with VCR-had loss of deep tendon reflexes in a high rate and a prolongation of sensory CV independent of the 1 total cumulative dose of VCR, 2 application mode according to different treatment regimen, 3 time interval since the last injections of the drug, 4 age of children at onset of therapy.
Effect of TiO2 on the mullite formation and mechanical properties of alumina porcelain
2010
Abstract The effect of adding TiO 2 to standard alumina porcelain on its microstructure and flexural strength was investigated. A series of alumina porcelain bodies containing increasing amounts of TiO 2 were prepared by extruding mixtures of raw materials and TiO 2 . Porcelain rods were fired under industrial scheduling in a manufacturing kiln. The overall degree of crystalline and amorphous phase content within the porcelain bodies was quantitatively determined using a Rietveld analysis. Results indicated a higher amount of mullite formation in porcelain bodies containing TiO 2 . Examination of the product materials using field emission scanning electron microscopy showed a high density o…
UVolc: A software platform for measuring volcanic SO2 fluxes
2012
We present here a novel stand-alone software platform, UVolc, for remotely sensed measurement of volcanic SO"2 emission rates. Such data are important diagnostics of activity conditions, with utility in forecasting measures. This code is made user friendly to enable volcanologists, who are not experts in the underlying physics of spectroscopy, to perform their own measurements. The program provides considerable reduction in errors and far greater operating flexibility than existing analogous code, which, unlike UVolc, can only interface with hardware no longer in manufacture. UVolc will be described here, including a presentation of data collected with this program in the field.
The warping torsion as a sequence of infinite bending problems
2014
[EN] In the present article, a methodology for teaching modeling problem of mixed torsion for thin-walled open sections. The mathematical analogy of warped twist as a problem of Euler-Bernoulli beams is exploited. In fact, the paper proposes to represent the warped torsion differential equation as a perturbation of the pure torsion or also called the Saint-Venant theory. Thus, it is demonstrated that under certain conditions related to the value of the torsional slenderness the response of a beam is the addition of infinite pure warped problems, that is, infinite bending problems, according to the analogy. We call this the asymptotic torsion analogy.
Labor Market Flexibility and Unemployment: New Empirical Evidence of Static and Dynamic Effects
2012
The aim of this paper is to analyze the relationship between labor market flexibility and unemployment outcomes. Using a panel of 97 countries from 1985 to 2008, the results of the paper suggest that improvements in labor market flexibility have a statistically and significant negative impact on unemployment outcomes (over unemployment, youth unemployment, and long-term unemployment). Among the different labor market flexibility indicators analyzed, hiring and firing regulations and hiring costs are found to have the strongest effect.
Complex tribomechanical characterization of ZnO nanowires: nanomanipulations supported by FEM simulations
2016
In the present work, we demonstrate a novel approach to nanotribological measurements based on the bending manipulation of hexagonal ZnO nanowires (NWs) in an adjustable half-suspended configuration inside a scanning electron microscope. A pick-and-place manipulation technique was used to control the length of the adhered part of each suspended NW. Static and kinetic friction were found by a 'self-sensing' approach based on the strain profile of the elastically bent NW during manipulation and its Young's modulus, which was separately measured in a three-point bending test with an atomic force microscope. The calculation of static friction from the most bent state was completely reconsidered…
Pedagogy-related tensions in flexibly scheduled early childhood education and care
2020
In flexibly scheduled early childhood education and care (ECEC), the timing of care depends on parents’ non-standard working hours. Multiple individual schedules and care times in a child group may cause irregularity in a child’s daily structures, and a child may miss a standard hour’s activities that are led by teachers with a pedagogical education. In this context, the significance and definition of pedagogy is vague and tensional. This study aimed at disclosing discursive tensions related to pedagogy in flexibly scheduled ECEC constructed in interviews by Finnish teachers and childcare nurses (n = 31). The analysis of the interview data followed the principles of discursive psychology. C…
RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY OF THE LATVIAN VERSION OF THE COMPUTERIZED EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS TEST “EXAMINER” IN A STUDENTS SAMPLE: RESULTS OF THE PILOT ST…
2016
The aim of this pilot-study was to assess reliability and validity of the Latvian version of the computerized executive functions test EXAMINER (Executive Abilities: Measures and Instruments for Neurobehavioral Evaluation and Research) in a sample of high school students and university students. The adaptation procedure included translation of the instructions and technical configuration of the test’s computerized version. The Latvian version of the EXAMINER includes tasks that measure executive functions of inhibition, set shifting and working memory updating. Participants included two sub-groups: 22 (14 males, 8 female) students from high school and 39 students (11 males, 28 female) from …
