The Reason of Imagination. The Blazing Worlds of Margaret Cavendish and Siri Hustvedt

2020

One of the peculiarities of 17th and 18th centuries literature is the link between knowledge and imagination, a relationship in which narration sometimes accompanies science, sometimes goes beyond it. The idea of imagination as a true means of knowledge is the subject of Margaret Cavendish’s best known work, The Blazing World (1666), where her alter ego is free to built a whole social and philosophical system based on corporality and subjectivity. From the same conception of imagination starts Siri Hustvedt when in 2014 rewrites The Blazing World: the story of an artist who still in the twentieth century tries to face the overwhelming misogyny with the performance of the body and the theory…

Motivasjon i matematikk hos elever som benytter «Den Virtuelle Matematikkskolen» : en aksjonsforskning der målet er å heve motivasjonen i matematikk …

2016

Masteroppgave matematikkdidaktikk – Universitetet i Agder 2016 The title of this study is “Motivation in mathematics among students using Den Virtuelle Matematikkskolen, translated The virtual school of mathematics. The goal of this study was to increase motivation in mathematics among the children I was teaching, and I tried to do it by introducing and working with the web resource “Den Virtuelle Matematikkskolen-U”, shortned DVM-U. I also wanted to find out which impact work with this resource would have for the students motivation in mathematics, and which implications it would have for my work as their teacher. The issue for this study is: In which ways can introduction and work with DV…

Tidlig algebra : en studie av tidlig algebra med elever på 6. trinn

2016

Masteroppgave matematikkdidaktikk – Universitetet i Agder 2016 The main theme for the research described in this thesis is early algebra. Early algebra is a phase that could fit the gap between arithmetic and algebra. Early algebra includes algebraic reasoning, such as analyzing relationships between quantities, noticing structure, studying change, or generalizing, without a need to use symbols. In my Theoretical Frame, I define the terms early algebra, algebraic thinking, and generalization; I explain the differences between early algebra and pre-algebra, and I go into the relationships between arithmetic and algebra. To gain insight into early algebra, I have studied how pupils in 6th gra…

Tilpasset opplæring for elever med dyskalkuli : en matematikklærer sin beskrivelse

2016

Masteroppgave matematikkdidaktikk – Universitetet i Agder 2016 The main topic of the thesis is how to adapt teaching to students with dyscalculia. In this thesis, the term dyscalculia is accounted for as one of several concepts for students who struggle particularly with mathematics. There is currently a lack of consensus among scientists about which concepts to be used for students with mathematics difficulties and what is meant by the different terms. In the thesis, there is therefore a separate chapter which presents an overview of the literatures use of concepts for students who have learning difficulties in mathematics. The thesis research questions consist of a main question and two s…

Kindergarten teachers’ accounts of their developing mathematical practice

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: ZDM. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11858-012-0422-1 This study explores kindergarten teachers’ accounts of their developing mathematical practice in the context of their participation in a developmental research project. Observations and interviews were analysed to elaborate the accounts as regards orchestrating mathematical activities in the kindergarten. A co-learning agreement was established as collaboration between the kindergarten teachers and researchers. The study reveals that the kindergarten teachers argue that they have been empowered in developing an inquiry stance towards mathematics and mathemat…

Revisiting the didactic triangle: from the particular to the general

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: ZDM. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.springerlink.com/content/61p78l089tnx8rn5/ The basic notion of a didactic triangle is explained with historical annotations on its origins and subsequent theorization in the literature. Instances of its application to classroom environments to demonstrate its representational capabilities are presented. Generalizations of the triangle are proposed that integrate the role of technology, the researcher in mathematics teaching developmental research, and mediating complexes in the student–teacher–content interfaces. Further, the use of the didactic triangle as a heuristic device is also discus…

Exploring students’ metacognition in relation to an integral-area evaluation task

2021

Several studies have been conducted to explore students’ understanding of the integral-area relationships, however, only a few focused on students’ metacognition in relation to this topic. In this study, students’ metacognitive knowledge, skills, and experiences in relation to an integral-area evaluation task are explored using semi-structured interviews and think-aloud protocol. The results show that several students developed monitoring strategies in relation to integral-area relationships; however, they do not use these strategies when solving integral-area tasks. The findings suggest that teachers and lecturers could use monitoring strategies more often when solving mathematical questio…

The Influence of Hedonic and Utilitarian Motivators on Likelihood to Buy a Tourism Package

2013

To fully understand the pattern of choice, it is important that any explanation of consumer behavior to be accompanied by a complete understanding of the interplay between a consumer’s functional goals and experiential preferences within the decision context. Consumer researchers have increasingly begun to investigate consumer choice based on distinctions that involve the purchase and consumption of goods for pleasure versus for more utilitarian and instrumental purposes. Consumers are often faced with these types of choices between hedonic and utilitarian alternatives that are at least partly driven by emotional desires rather than cold cognitive deliberations. This research approaches fac…
