PAINT : Pareto front interpolation for nonlinear multiobjective optimization

2011

A method called PAINT is introduced for computationally expensive multiobjective optimization problems. The method interpolates between a given set of Pareto optimal outcomes. The interpolation provided by the PAINT method implies a mixed integer linear surrogate problem for the original problem which can be optimized with any interactive method to make decisions concerning the original problem. When the scalarizations of the interactive method used do not introduce nonlinearity to the problem (which is true e.g., for the synchronous NIMBUS method), the scalarizations of the surrogate problem can be optimized with available mixed integer linear solvers. Thus, the use of the interactive meth…

Handling expensive multiobjective optimization problems with evolutionary algorithms

2017

Multiobjective optimization problems (MOPs) with a large number of conflicting objectives are often encountered in industry. Moreover, these problem typically involve expensive evaluations (e.g. time consuming simulations or costly experiments), which pose an extra challenge in solving them. In this thesis, we first present a survey of different methods proposed in the literature to handle MOPs with expensive evaluations. We observed that most of the existing methods cannot be easily applied to problems with more than three objectives. Therefore, we propose a Kriging-assisted reference vector guided evolutionary algorithm (K-RVEA) for problems with at least three expensive objectives. The alg…

Parkinson's disease and segmental coordination during modified figure of eight walking turning task

2016

Turning while walking is problematic for individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD). We hypothesized there would be instability and turning difficulty for the PD subjects while performing a complex motor skill task of the modified figure of eight (MFE) walking task. There were 26 subjects (10 males and 16 females) with clinical diagnosis of “idiopathic” PD and undergoing L-dopa treatment participating in this study. The PD subjects performed the clinical balance modified figure of eight (MFE) test. The 3-D positions of the head, trunk and pelvis were recorded and analyzed. The angular displacement and angular velocity of the head, trunk and pelvis were calculated. Counter-clockwise and clock…

Higgs-like spectator field as the origin of structure

2021

We show that the observed primordial perturbations can be entirely sourced by a light spectator scalar field with a quartic potential, akin to the Higgs boson, provided that the field is sufficiently displaced from vacuum during inflation. The framework relies on the indirect modulation of reheating, which is implemented without any direct coupling between the spectator field and the inflaton and does not require non-renormalisable interactions. The scenario gives rise to local non-Gaussianity with $f_{\rm NL}\simeq 5$ as the typical signal. As an example model where the indirect modulation mechanism is realised for the Higgs boson, we study the Standard Model extended with right-handed neu…

Constraining the nonstandard interaction parameters in long baseline neutrino experiments

2016

In this article we investigate the prospects for probing the strength of the possible non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI) in long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. We find that these experiments are sensitive to NSI couplings down to the level of 0.01-0.1 depending on the oscillation channel and the baseline length, as well as on the detector's fiducial mass. We also investigate the interference of the leptonic CP angle $\delta_{CP}$ with the constraining of the NSI couplings. It is found that the interference is strong in the case of the $\nu_{e}\leftrightarrow\nu_{\mu}$ and $\nu_{e}\leftrightarrow\nu_{\tau}$ transitions but not significant in other transitions. In our numeri…

Baryogenesis and gravity waves from a UV-completed electroweak phase transition

2021

We study gravity wave production and baryogenesis at the electroweak phase transition, in a real singlet scalar extension of the Standard Model, including vector-like top partners to generate the CP violation needed for electroweak baryogenesis (EWBG). The singlet makes the phase transition strongly first-order through its coupling to the Higgs boson, and it spontaneously breaks CP invariance through a dimension-5 contribution to the top quark mass term, generated by integrating out the heavy top quark partners. We improve on previous studies by incorporating updated transport equations, compatible with large bubble wall velocities. The wall speed and thickness are computed directly from th…

Stable carbon isotopic composition of peat columns, subsoil and vegetation on natural and forestry-drained boreal peatlands.

2018

We studied natural and forestry-drained peatlands to examine the effect of over 34 years lowered water table on the δ13C values of vegetation, bulk peat and subsoil. In the seven studied sites, δ13C in the basal peat layer was 1.1 and 1.2 ‰ lower than that of the middle-layer and surface layer, respectively. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between the δ13C values of the basal and surface peat layers, possibly due to carbon (C) recycling within the peat column. In the same mire complex, natural fen peat δ13C values were lower than those of the nearby bog, possibly due to the dominance of vascular plants on fen and the generally larger share of recycled C in the fens than in the…
