The spatial context is criticalwhen assessing present-day climate anomalies, attributing them to potential forcings and making statements regarding their frequency and severity in a long-term perspective. Recent international initiatives have expanded the number of high-quality proxy-records and developed new statistical reconstruction methods. These advances allow more rigorous regional past temperature reconstructions and, in turn, the possibility of evaluating climate models on policy-relevant, spatiotemporal scales. Here we provide a new proxy-based, annually-resolved, spatial reconstruction of the European summer (June-August) temperature fields back to 755 CE based on Bayesian hierarc…

Radiance-based NIRv as a proxy for GPP of corn and soybean

2020

Abstract Substantial uncertainty exists in daily and sub-daily gross primary production (GPP) estimation, which dampens accurate monitoring of the global carbon cycle. Here we find that near-infrared radiance of vegetation (NIRv,Rad), defined as the product of observed NIR radiance and normalized difference vegetation index, can accurately estimate corn and soybean GPP at daily and half-hourly time scales, benchmarked with multi-year tower-based GPP at three sites with different environmental and irrigation conditions. Overall, NIRv,Rad explains 84% and 78% variations of half-hourly GPP for corn and soybean, respectively, outperforming NIR reflectance of vegetation (NIRv,Ref), enhanced vege…

A review of Payment for Ecosystem Services for the economic internalization of environmental externalities: A water perspective

2016

Abstract The allocation of economic value to environmental goods is intended to internalize the socio-economic and environmental costs of policies implemented and thus recognizes the value of the ecosystem and the consequences of environmental damage. This entails identifying the costs and benefits of management measures for conservation and of degraded ecosystems. The difficulties of this task are: (i) they are goods that have no market and (ii) there is a need for economic funding for conservation purposes. Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) seeks to internalize the environmental externalities of human actions, ascribing monetary value to Ecosystem Services (ES) and helping decision-mak…

Integrated biomonitoring of airborne pollutants over space and time using tree rings, bark, leaves and epiphytic lichens

2016

The integrated use of tree rings and outer tissues, and lichens, was tested for monitoring how pollutant concentrations vary in space and over time nearby an incinerator in industrial area in Central Italy. Trace elements in thalli of lichen Xanthoria parietina and in leaves, bark, wood of Quercus pubescens, as well as carbon, oxygen and nitrogen isotope ratios in tree rings were analyzed. Some trace elements in the leaves differed significantly between the plots, though this was not the case in lichens and bark. The values of δ13C and δ18O showed the same trend in all plots, while the values of δ15N were higher in the distal plot. The results indicated that trace elements were intercepted …

Coping with the impacts of Urban Heat Islands A literature based study on understanding urban heat vulnerability and the need for resilience in citie…

2018

The urban heat island (UHI) is a phenomenon whereby temperature levels in urban areas are higher than in surrounding rural settings. Urban heat islands are a matter of increasing concern, since they can affect communities by exacerbating air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions (due to the greater use of air conditioning) and the occurrence of heat-related illness, and may lead to higher levels of mortality. This paper provides a description of the phenomena of (UHI) and an analysis of how cities are vulnerable to it. It highlights the need for resilience and the variety of means by which the UHI can be tackled. It describes a set of trends in two regions in Germany and Australia, which i…

Geodynamic control on carbonate diagenesis: Petrographic and isotopic investigation of the Upper Jurassic formations of the Paris Basin (France).

2007

23 pages; International audience; The Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian carbonates of the eastern edge of the Paris Basin display poor reservoir properties (Φb15% and Kb0.1 md). The petrographic investigation and the resultant paragenetic sequence show that this is due to extensive precipitation of 2 types of almost synchronous blocky LMC (Low Magnesian Calcite) cements during mesogenesis (burial). Stable isotope investigation of these non-recrystallized cements, through both microdrilling sampling and in-situ SIMS (Secondary IonMass Spectrometry) analysis, shows that they originated from slightly buffered meteoric fluids (−3‰SMOW to −8‰SMOW) flowing through the Malm carbonate aquifers of the east…

The geological roots of South America: 4.1 Ga and 3.7 Ga zircon crystals discovered in N.E. Brazil and N.W. Argentina

2015

International audience; We present new LA-ICP-MS in situ geochronological results for seven Eoarchean zircons dated at 3.7 Ga coming from Cretaceous ash layers of NW Argentina and one Hadean single crystal sampled within the São Francisco Craton in NE Brazil. This zircon comprises a zoned magmatic core dated at 4.1 Ga surrounded by a 1.9 Ga overgrowth related to Paleoproterozoic reworking. This Hadean age is consistent with previously published Nd model ages on orthogneisses from the same domain. These two results represent among the oldest geological witnesses discovered to date in South America, which demonstrates the occurrence of a primitive crust. The contrasting age patterns recorded …

Soil erosion processes in European vineyards: A qualitative comparison of rainfall simulation measurements in Germany, Spain and France

2016

Small portable rainfall simulators are considered a useful tool to analyze soil erosion processes in cultivated lands. European research groups in Spain (Valencia, Málaga, Lleida, Madrid and La Rioja), France (Reims) and Germany (Trier) have used different rainfall simulators (varying in drop size distribution and fall velocities, kinetic energy, plot forms and sizes, and field of application) to study soil loss, surface flow, runoff and infiltration coefficients in different experimental plots (Valencia, Montes de Málaga, Penedès, Campo Real and La Rioja in Spain, Champagne in France and Mosel-Ruwer valley in Germany). The measurements and experiments developed by these research teams give…

Global Groundwater-Vegetation Relations

2017

Groundwater is an integral component of the water cycle, and it also influences the carbon cycle by supplying moisture to ecosystems. However, the extent and determinants of groundwater-vegetation interactions are poorly understood at the global scale. Using several high-resolution data products, we show that the spatial patterns of ecosystem gross primary productivity and groundwater table depth are correlated during at least one season in more than two-thirds of the global vegetated area. Positive relationships, i.e., larger productivity under shallower groundwater table, predominate in moisture-limited dry to mesic conditions with herbaceous and shrub vegetation. Negative relationships, …

13C composition of dissolved organic carbon in upland forested catchments of the Morvan Mountains (France): Influence of coniferous and deciduous veg…

2007

10 pages; International audience; One of the main environmental changes caused by human activities is that of land use. These changes influence the quantity and quality of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) fluxes through the vegetation–soil–stream system. The aim of this work is to evaluate the influence of the substitution of native deciduous forests by well managed coniferous forests on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fluxes and their associated carbon isotopic composition (d13CDOC). DOC fluxes and d13CDOC were monitored for 2 years in the streams of four similar upland forested catchments in the Morvan Mountains (France). Mean annual DOC concentrations and fluxes were 2–4 times lower in …
