Language practices in primary schools [in Nairobi] : the teachers' perspectives

2010

ABSTRACT Otieno, Suzanne Adhiambo. LANGUAGE PRACTICES IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN NAIROBI: THE TEACHERS’ PERSPECTIVES. A Pro Gradu Thesis in Special Education, University of Jyväskylä, Department of Educational Sciences, 2010. 84 pages. Unpublished Literacy is facilitated by the readiness to comprehend fluently written language and this requires accurate and fluent basic reading skills, good mastery of the language to be read and a lot of practice in reading the particular language. Basic reading skills involve the ability to pronounce written words accurately and this requires appropriate teaching instructions in a language most familiar to the pupils. Research has found that learning to read in…

Sociodemographic and behavioural correlates of lifetime number of sexual partners: findings from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing.

2018

BackgroundNo current data are available on correlates of lifetime sexual partners at older ages. This study aimed to explore correlates of the lifetime number of sexual partners in a sample of older adults.MethodData were from 3054 men and 3867 women aged ≥50 years participating in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Participants reported their lifetime number of sexual partners and a range of sociodemographic characteristics and health behaviours. Multivariable multinomial logistic regression was used to examine correlates of lifetime number of sexual partners, with analyses performed separately for men and women and weighted for non-response.ResultsYounger age, being separated/divor…

Foodomics assessed by Fourier transform mass spectrometry

2019

Abstract With its ultrahigh resolution power and excellent mass accuracy, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry is the perfct tool to analyze the “foodome” as the set of all polar small molecular compounds present in an investigated food sample. We present here selected applications of this technique in unraveling the metabolome in complex foods (thermally affected, fermentation products, distillates) such exemplified with Maillard reaction products or with wines and spirits. Technical considerations for high resolution mass analyzers are provided from a practical point of view. Moreover, aspects of food safety and nutritional quality are covered by presenting applicat…

Diaschisis-Like Association of Hippocampal Atrophy and Posterior Cingulate Cortex Hypometabolism in Cognitively Normal Elderly Depends on Impaired In…

2017

Hippocampal atrophy and hypometabolism of the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), early markers of Alzheimer's disease (AD), have been shown to be associated in late mild cognitive impairment and early AD via atrophy of connecting cingulum fibers. Recently, a direct association of hippocampal atrophy and PCC hypometabolism has been shown in cognitively normal elderly. We aimed to investigate if this association might be modulated by partly non-hippocampogenic alterations of parahippocampal cingulum (PHC) integrity. 45 cognitively healthy elderly aged 59 to 89 years were included from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative. Hippocampal volumes and PCC glucose metabolism were measured …

Recollection and familiarity in dense hippocampal amnesia: A case study

2004

In the amnesia literature, disagreement exists over whether anterograde amnesia involves recollective-based recognition processes and/or familiarity-based ones depending on whether the anatomical damage is restricted to the hippocampus or also involves adjacent areas, particularly the entorhinal and perirhinal cortices. So far, few patients with well documented anatomical lesions and detailed assessment of recollective and recognition performance have been described. We report a comprehensive neuroanatomical assessment and detailed investigation of the anterograde memory functions of a previously described severe amnesic patient (VC). The results of four previously published neuroradiologic…

Cyberknife radiosurgery for cranial plasma cell tumor

2014

Cranial and intracranial involvement by myelomatous disease is relatively uncommon. Furthermore, systemic manifestations of multiple myeloma are present in the majority of these cases at the time of symptom onset. The authors report the case of a patient with serial appearance of multiple intracranial plasma cell tumor localizations as the first manifestations of a multiple myeloma. The patient was treated with CyberKnife radiosurgery for a lesion localized at the clivus and sella turcica with complete local control. With such a technique, based on high-dose conformality, the tumor was centered with an ablative dose of radiation and, at the same time, with a low dose spreading to the surrou…

Action expertise reduces brain activity for audiovisual matching actions: An fMRI study with expert drummers

2011

When we observe someone perform a familiar action, we can usually predict what kind of sound that action will produce. Musical actions are over-experienced by musicians and not by non-musicians, and thus offer a unique way to examine how action expertise affects brain processes when the predictability of the produced sound is manipulated. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to scan 11 drummers and 11 age- and gender-matched novices who made judgments on point-light drumming movements presented with sound. In Experiment 1, sound was synchronized or desynchronized with drumming strikes, while in Experiment 2 sound was always synchronized, but the natural covariation between sound in…
