Advances in ventilatory treatment for OSAS
2021
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the most widely used treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and was established four decades ago. An alternative option is to use bilevel ventilation, in order to improve compliance to treatment especially in patients who need a high therapeutic pressure to prevent nocturnal respiratory events. Automatic CPAP or bilevel ventilation are also established among OSA therapeutic choices, and are generally indicated in cases of highly variable therapeutic pressure. The major advances in the field regard OSAS in the context of uncomplicated obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS), in which either CPAP or bilevel ventilation yield comparable result…
A Band Model of Cambium Development: Opportunities and Prospects
2021
More than 60% of tree phytomass is concentrated in stem wood, which is the result of periodic activity of the cambium. Nevertheless, there are few attempts to quantitatively describe cambium dynamics. In this study, we develop a state-of-the-art band model of cambium development, based on the kinetic heterogeneity of the cambial zone and the connectivity of the cell structure. The model describes seasonal cambium development based on an exponential function under climate forcing which can be effectively used to estimate the seasonal cell production for individual trees. It was shown that the model is able to simulate different cell production for fast-, middle- and slow-growing trees under …
Spatial and temporal variability of rainfall over the Republic of Djibouti from 1946 to 2017.
2021
20 pages; International audience; For the first time, the spatial and temporal variability of rainfall in the Republic of Djibouti is investigated using data from 14 weather stations over the period 1946–2017. Due to limited data availability, high-resolution long-term satellite rainfall products (CHIRPS, PERSIANN-CDR, TAMSATv3, ARC2) and ERA5 reanalysis also contribute to document time–space rainfall variability at monthly, seasonal and annual scales. Principal component analysis identifies two spatially coherent regions of rainfall variability in the east (coastal zone) and the west (inland zone) of the country. Annual rainfall amounts are everywhere very low (60–300 mm), but with contras…
Psoriasis and Its Impact on In-Hospital Outcome in Patients Hospitalized with Acute Kidney Injury
2020
Background: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease which affects the body far beyond the skin. Whereas there is solid evidence that chronic skin inflammation in psoriasis drives cardiovascular disease, the impact on renal impairment and acute kidney injury (AKI) is still unclear. We aimed to analyze the impact of psoriasis on the in-hospital outcome of patients hospitalized with AKI. Methods: In this retrospective database study, we investigated data on characteristics, comorbidities, and in-hospital outcomes for all hospitalized patients with AKI stratified for concomitant psoriasis, which were collected by the Federal Office of Statistics in Germany between 2005 and 2016. Results: Am…
Corpi estranei gastrici: i bezoari. A proposito di due casi
2004
Objective: The authors report their experience about the treat merit of two cases of gastric bczoar, treated in curative mode, the first endoscopically and the second with surgical intervention. Setting: Operative Unit of General and Thoracic Surgery, Department of General and Emergency Surgery, Organ Transplantation. Policlinico, University of Palermo. Imerventaiion: The patients were submitted to curative treatment, one with endoscopic treatment (mechanical frag- mentation of phytobezoar and fragments extraction via-over- tube), the second with surgical gastrotomy {stamp trichobezoar). There were no procedure- related complications. Results: the two patients were curative and radically tr…
Types, triggers and treatment strategies of psoriasis
2013
Psoriasis is a common chronic, immune mediated, inflammatory disease, characterized by periods of exacerbation and remission. Patients with psoriasis have asignificantly impaired quality of life; the disease is associated with substantial burden interms of disability or psychosocial stigmatization. Moreover, in a percentage of patientsthat varies between 5% and 42%, depending on the population studied, psoriatic arthritismay occur.Psoriasis is found worldwide but the prevalence varies among different ethnicgroups. It has a strong genetic component but environmental factors such as ß-haemolyticstreptococcal infection, HIV, stress, and drugs, including ß blockers, antimalarials andlithium can …
The Aqua-Planet Experiment (APE): CONTROL SST Simulation
2013
Climate simulations by 16 atmospheric general circulation models (AGCMs) are compared on an aqua-planet, a water-covered Earth with prescribed sea surface temperature varying only in latitude. The idealised configuration is designed to expose differences in the circulation simulated by different models. Basic features of the aqua-planet climate are characterised by comparison with Earth. The models display a wide range of behaviour. The balanced component of the tropospheric mean flow, and mid-latitude eddy covariances subject to budget constraints, vary relatively little among the models. In contrast, differences in damping in the dynamical core strongly influence transient eddy amplitudes…
Demonstrating measure-correlate-predict algorithms for estimation of wind resources in central Finland
2010
In this study, measure-correlate-predict (MCP) algorithms - Simple Linear Regression and Variance Ratio Methods - for predicting wind speed were studied. The MCP algorithms were successfully used to predict missing wind speeds at two sites in Jyväskylä and Viitasaari, respectively. These two algorithms used data from one of the site to predict missing wind speed data at the other site. The results obtained using the MCP methods were compared using metrics that showed the characteristics of the predicted data to be unbiased compared to measured data. From the data of this study, we also evaluated wind power density at both sites which categorized the local wind resources as poor since the de…
The impact of periodic interviews on unemployment duration : Evidence from the 2017 Finnish reform
2023
In 2017, a Finnish policy reform intensified the Public Employment Services' practice of periodically interviewing unemployed jobseekers. This study used high-quality administrative data to analyse the effect of interviews on unemployment duration. We used a difference-in-differences approach that exploited regional variations in treatment intensity. Our results show that a 10 percentage point increase in interview probability increased the monthly hazard rate of employment by 3.1 per cent, with the effect being strongest among jobseekers aged 25–34 and jobseekers with a low education level. Also, our results demonstrate a strong effect on participation in active labour market programmes. p…
1.klases skolēnu izziņas darbības veicināšana vizuālās mākslas stundās
2021
Viktorijas Maļukovas bakalaura darba 1.klases skolēnu izziņas darbības veicināšana vizuālās mākslas stundās mērķis ir teorētiski noskaidrot un praktiski pārbaudīt kā vizuālās mākslas stundās sākumskolas 1.klasē veicināma skolēnu izziņas darbība. Pētījums sastāv no teorētiskās daļas, kurā analizēta literatūra par izziņas darbības veicināšanu un 1.klases skolēnu psiholoģiskā raksturojuma. Pamatā ir analizēti tādi autori: V.Hibnere, A.Vorobjovs, G.Svence, M.Vidnere, Ļ.Vigotskis, I.Puškarevs u.c. Empīriskajā daļā aprakstītas novērotās 1.klases vizuālās mākslas stundas 2 posmos un shematiski apkopoti un analizēti iegūtie rezultāti. Izziņas darbība tiek sadalīta divos līmeņos. 1.līmenis ir jutekl…
