Total Elbow Replacement as Primary Treatment for Complex Fractures of the Distal Osteopenic Humerus

2003

Background: The use of hip and shoulder arthroplasty in elderly patients for grossly displaced intraarticular fractures is becoming more and more accepted. Total elbow replacement (TER) has not been considered an option for the treatment of extensively comminuted fractures of the distal humerus because surgeons feel the outcome is generally not predictable after TER. Evaluation of TER: On the basis of a MEDLINE literature search of this issue and the documented results based on the improvement of implant designs, operative technique and patient selection, TER has a definite role in the treatment of some fractures of the distal humerus.

Association between lower extremity muscular strength and acute knee injuries in young team‐sports athletes

2020

The purpose of this study was to investigate LE muscular strength variables as potential risk factors for all and non‐contact acute knee and ACL injuries in young athletes. A total of 188 young (≤21) male and 174 female basketball and floorball players participated in LE muscular strength tests and were followed up to three years. The strength test battery consisted of 1RM leg press, maximal concentric isokinetic (60°/s) quadriceps and hamstrings and maximal isometric hip abductor strength. The outcomes were a new acute knee or ACL injury and a new acute non‐contact knee or ACL injury. A total of 51 (17 in males and 34 in females) new acute knee injuries registered and 17 (one in males and …

Biomechanical Bases for Anterior Knee Pain and Patellar Instability

2012

The anterior knee pain syndrome and functional patellar instability in the active young person is one of the most complex knee disorders, with a multiple factor and highly variable pathogenesis, with intermingling mechanical and neurological factors. Probably the neural factor is the cause of the well established symptoms in patients with certain mechanical anomalies and a knee overuse.

The occupation of dental assistants (DAs) involves many health risks of the musculoskeletal system due to static and prolonged work, which can lead to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of MSDs in DAs in Germany. Methods: For this purpose, an online questionnaire analyzed 406 (401 female participants and 5 male participants, 401w/5m) DAs. It was based on the Nordic Questionnaire (lifetime, 12-month, and seven-day MSDs’ prevalence separated into neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist, upper back, lower back, hip, knee, and ankle), and occupational and sociodemographic questions as well as questions about specific medical conditions. Results: 98.5% …

Anterior dislocation in a total knee arthroplasty: A case report and literature review.

2015

Dislocations of a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are an uncommon injury and only few cases of anterior dislocations have been reported. We report a rare case of anterior dislocation of a 10-year-old posterior stabilized total knee arthroplasty in a 74-year-old woman. The patient was successfully treated by close reduction of the dislocation followed by immobilization in full extension with a long leg cast. Because of a high risk of neurovascular complications, a high index of suspicion for vascular injury must be maintained. For this reason, a proper diagnosis is required and immediate reduction is recommended.

Guidance strategies and motor modelling in physiotherapy

1996

Patient education is an important aspect of physiotherapy. Supporting and developing patients' self-motivation and activity requires efficient education during the practice period. Physiotherapists use predominantly verbal instruction and demonstration in their teaching activities. The aim of this study was to investigate how physiotherapists organise their therapeutic interventions in order to facilitate patients' learning. This was done by studying the ways in which physiotherapists provide their patients with the mental and motoric imagery pertaining to the action to be performed using verbal, visual and manual guidance. The study was undertaken at three hospitals in southern Finland. Fi…

Beneficial Intervertebral Disc and Muscle Adaptations in High-Volume Road Cyclists

2019

PURPOSE: Cycling is widely practiced as a mode of transportation, a leisurely pursuit and a competitive sport. Approximately half of cyclists experience low back pain. Yet, there has been limited study of spine tissue adaptations due to cycling. METHODS: To investigate potential risk factors for spinal pain, we compared 18 high-volume cyclists (>150 km per week for ³5 years) to 18 height-matched non-sporting referents. Participants had no history of spinal pathology. Magnetic resonance imaging was used to quantify intervertebral disc (IVD) morphology and hydration; and psoas, erector spinae, quadratus lumborum and multifidus muscle size and fat content. Endurance of trunk muscles (flexors a…

Mechanical loading influences the lumbar intervertebral disc : A cross‐sectional study in 308 athletes and 71 controls

2021

There is evidence in animal populations that loading and exercise can positively impact the intervertebral disc (IVD). However, there is a paucity of information in humans. We examined the lumbar IVDs in 308 young athletes across six sporting groups (baseball, swimming, basketball, kendo, soccer and running; mean age 19yrs) and 71 non‐athletic controls. IVD status was quantified via the ratio of IVD to vertebral body height (IVD hypertrophy) and ratio of signal intensity in the nucleus to that in the annulus signal (IVD nucleus hydration) on sagittal T2‐weighted MRI. P‐values were adjusted via the false discovery rate method to mitigate false positives. In examining the whole collective, co…

Warm-Up and Hamstrings Stiffness, Stress Relaxation, Flexibility, and Knee Proprioception in Young Soccer Players

2022

Context: Nerves or fascia may limit motion in young soccer players, thereby contributing to frequent hamstring injuries. Nerve gliding exercises and self-myofascial release techniques may enhance the range of motion. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the acute effect of foam rolling (FR) and neurodynamic nerve gliding (NDNG) on hamstring flexibility, passive stiffness, viscoelasticity and proprioception during the warm-up of soccer players. Design: Crossover study design. Setting: Research laboratory. Participants: Fifteen male soccer players on the same team (age 18.0 ± 1.4 years, body mass 76.9 ± 7.8 kg, height 183 ± 6 cm). Intervention: FR and NDNG included six sets of 45 s…

Hippocampal event-related potentials to pitch deviances in an auditory oddball situation in the cat: experiment I.

1995

Hippocampal event-related potentials (ERP) in the areas CA1, CA3, and dentate fascia (Df) were recorded in cats during an oddball situation when pitch deviant tones occurred in a series of standard tones. When difference waves were calculated by subtracting ERPs to the standard tones from those to the deviant tones, no clear N40d, corresponding to a cat analogue of the human mismatch negativity (MMN) observed in earlier studies, could be detected. Instead, a prominent later negativity (N130d) was observed. A possible extra-hippocampal source of the process reflected by the MMN-like negativity, and a relation between an orienting response (OR) and the N130d are discussed.
