How to develop strategies of adaptation to climate change based on a foresight exercise?
2019
Context and purpose of the study ‐ Prospective studies raise a real intellectual interest for those who contribute to them or take cognizance of it. But they are often considered too difficult to operationalize, and most of the prospective exercises are not followed by action plans, particularly at value chain level. To overcome this difficulty in linking the work of experts and the decisions of stakeholder of value chains, a particular effort was made to operationalize the outcomes from a prospective study on the French vine and wine industry in the context of climate change. The approach consisted in collecting and using the feed‐back of professionalsfrom the wine industry about these out…
Co-mimics have a mutualistic relationship despite unequal defences
2007
Defensive mimicry, where species have evolved to resemble others in order to evade predators, is quite common in the animal kingdom. The two extremes of the mimicry spectrum are known as 'batesian' and 'mullerian'. Batesian mimics develop signals — visual cues for instance — that are similar to those of species being mimicked, but stop short of adopting the attribute that makes it unprofitable prey to predators. Mullerian mimics both resemble the model species and share the anti-predation attribute — by being dangerous or unpalatable. These different types of mimic were identified a century ago, but the dynamics of mimicry between unequally defended prey remain unresolved. In an experiment …
Adaptive plasticity of blue tits(Parus caeruleus)and great tits(Parus major)breeding in natural and semi‐natural insular habitats
2004
The breeding performance and foraging of blue and great tits, and the abundance of arthropods living on the trees of an oak-wood and of a coniferous reafforestation were studied in Sicily, in order to: 1) compare breeding parameters in natural and semi-natural habitats within the same area; 2) estimate the degree of overlap in peak resource and peak demand of young tits, and the overlap of nestling diet of the two species in the two habitats. Both species had earlier laying dates, laid more eggs and raised more fledglings in the oakwood than in the reafforestation; they achieved the same fledging success within the same habitat type. These differences are probably due to the earlier and hig…
Il piccolo nel grande, il grande nel piccolo. Gli adeguamenti liturgici di Culotta e Leone The small in the big, the big in the small. Culotta and Le…
2015
Inflammation-Induced Intussusceptive Angiogenesis in Murine Colitis
2010
Intussusceptive angiogenesis is a morphogenetic process that forms new blood vessels by the division of a single blood vessel into two lumens. Here, we show that this process of intraluminal division participates in the inflammation-induced neovascularization associated with chemically induced murine colitis. In studies of both acute (4-7 days) and chronic (28-31 days) colitis, intravital microscopy of intravascular tracers demonstrated a twofold reduction in blood flow velocity. In the acute colitis model, the decreased velocity was associated with marked dilatation of the mucosal plexus. In contrast, chronic inflammation was associated with normal caliber vessels and duplication (and trip…
A qualitative meta-synthesis of patients' experiences of intra- and inter-hospital transitions
2013
Aim. To aggregate, interpret and synthesize findings from qualitative studies of patients’ experiences on being transferred/in transition from one hospital to another or from one ward to another. Background. Studies about patients’ experiences of transfer focused on concepts such as transfer stress, transfer anxiety, and translocation syndrome; however, a metasynthesis on experiences of transition across different patient populations was lacking. Design. The meta-synthesis approach was based on the guidelines by Sandelowski and Barroso. Data source. Six electronic databases were searched for articles published between the years 1999-2011, based on the target phenomenon: patients’ experience…
Half-width plots, a simple tool to predict peak shape, reveal column kinetics and characterise chromatographic columns in liquid chromatography: Stat…
2013
Peak profiles in chromatography are characterised by their height, position, width and asymmetry; the two latter depend on the values of the left and right peak half-widths. Simple correlations have been found between the peak half-widths and the retention times. The representation of such correlations has been called half-width plots. For isocratic elution, the plots are parabolic, although often, the parabolas can be approximated to straight-lines. The plots can be obtained with the half-widths/retention time data for a set of solutes experiencing the same kinetics, eluted with a mobile phase at fixed or varying composition. When the analysed solutes experience different resistance to mas…
Sociālpedagoģiskais darbs ar jaunpienākušajiem skolēniem ar garīgās attīstības traucējumiem adaptācijas procesā
2016
Seasonal gene expression kinetics between diapause phases in Drosophila virilis group species and overwintering differences between diapausing and no…
2015
AbstractMost northern insect species experience a period of developmental arrest, diapause, which enables them to survive over the winter and postpone reproduction until favorable conditions. We studied the timing of reproductive diapause and its long-term effects on the cold tolerance of Drosophila montana, D. littoralis and D. ezoana females in seasonally varying environmental conditions. At the same time we traced expression levels of 219 genes in D. montana using a custom-made microarray. We show that the seasonal switch to reproductive diapause occurs over a short time period and that overwintering in reproductive diapause has long-lasting effects on cold tolerance. Some genes, such as…
Exercise acts as a drug; the pharmacological benefits of exercise.
2012
The beneficial effects of regular exercise for the promotion of health and cure of diseases have been clearly shown. In this review, we would like to postulate the idea that exercise can be considered as a drug. Exercise causes a myriad of beneficial effects for health, including the promotion of health and lifespan, and these are reviewed in the first section of this paper. Then we deal with the dosing of exercise. As with many drugs, dosing is extremely important to get the beneficial effects of exercise. To this end, the organism adapts to exercise. We review the molecular signalling pathways involved in these adaptations because understanding them is of great importance to be able to pr…
