The paper analyses the distribution and the characteristics of the Second style in Sicily, considering the architectural contexts and associations, and the details (schemes, colours, motifs) of each example. These testify to the high value of the Second style and the adaptation of the paintings, in the most demanding examples (Casetta ellenistica at Centuripe, Casa delle Maschere at Soluntum), to an architectural layout planned for realizing impressive luxury suites. Eminentissimae foeminae: la dinastia giulio-claudia vista dalla Sicilia

The paper deals with the portraits of the female members of the Julio-Claudian dynasty that were found in Sicily (Tyndaris, Thermae Himeraeae, Solunto, Centuripe, Syracuse, Catania, ?Lipari) and in the surrounding small islands (Pantelleria/S. Teresa, Malta/Rabat, Gozo/Victoria). In addition to some portrait heads, a series of lesser known pieces, among which several fragments of iconic statues, rather neglected till now, are discussed. Iconography, associations and contexts are considered in order to assess the messages and functions of the statues, and the role these images played in the cultural discourse.

Recent scholarship pointed out how the towns of Sicily experienced wide urbanistic and architectural transformations during the Hellenistic period. Among the sculptures of the Museo Civico of Termini Imerese that were published by Nicola Bonacasa in 1960, a female portrait head of a Julio-Claudian princess is remarkable for its excellent workmanship. The paper deals with the problem of the identification of the subject, variously referred to as Agrippina I, Agrippina II, Messalina or Drusilla, according to the interpretation of the portrait series “Glyptothek of Munich 316- Caere” to which the head belongs. Si presenta il più noto reperto scultoreso dalla Villa di Contrada Sora a Torre del Greco, sondata per cunicoli dall'allora principe ereditario della dinastia borbonica, al cui seguito il reperto giunse a Palermo all'epoca della fuga della famiglia reale per l'avanzata francese. Il Satiro, una delle migliori repliche del celeberrimo Satiro Versante di Prassitele, consente di individuare alcune specificità della rielaborazione copistica rispondenti al gusto del facoltoso committente della costa vesuviana.

Un sarcofago romano, conservato nella Cattedrale di Palermo e risalente alla metà del III sec. d.C., è decorato con una coppia di coniugi attorniata dalle Muse. Si tratta di una composizione che intende celebrare la sfera delle occupazioni spirituali, nei cui valori i protagonisti delle raffigurazioni volevano mostrare di riconoscersi. Between June and July 2022, the University of Palermo started new feld investigations in the Contrada Mango sanctuary in Segesta, which, in the 1950s and 1960s, had brought to light a monumental temenos-terracing wall in isodomic technique and the remains of a Doric Severe-Style peripteral temple, largely spoliated at an unknown period.
