Bodily dimensions of reading and writing practices on paper and digitally
2015
The bodily aspects of reading/writing practices are investigated in Finland. The paper is considered more adaptive to varied reading purposes than the screen.Handwriting is described as a more flexible and relaxed practice than typing.Skills determine less than materials and images the practices of reading/writing.Digital interfaces determine the ways we read and write less than suggested. This article investigates the different shapes in which reading and writing practices occur when paper/pen are compared with keyboard/screen. The focus is on the bodily aspects of these practices. Reading and writing are viewed as techniques of the body, which over the years have become increasingly mediat…
The Mediation of Politics through Twitter: An Analysis of Messages posted during the Campaign for the German Federal Election 2013
2015
Patterns found in digital trace data are increasingly used as evidence of social phenomena. Still, the role of digital services not as mirrors but instead as mediators of social reality has been neglected. We identify characteristics of this mediation process by analyzing Twitter messages referring to politics during the campaign for the German federal election 2013 and comparing the thus emerging image of political reality with established measurements of political reality. We focus on the relationship between temporal dynamics in politically relevant Twitter messages and crucial campaign events, comparing dominant topics in politically relevant tweets with topics prominent in surveys and …
Does Sedentary Behavior Predict Academic Performance in Adolescents or the Other Way Round? A Longitudinal Path Analysis.
2016
This study examined whether adolescents’ time spent on sedentary behaviors (academic, technological-based and social-based activities) was a better predictor of academic performance than the reverse. A cohort of 755 adolescents participated in a three-year period study. Structural Equation Modeling techniques were used to test plausible causal hypotheses. Four competing models were analyzed to determine which model best fitted the data. The Best Model was separately tested by gender. The Best Model showed that academic performance was a better predictor of sedentary behaviors than the other way round. It also indicated that students who obtained excellent academic results were more likely t…
Doppler Power Characteristics Obtained from Calibrated Channel State Information for Human Activity Recognition
2020
This paper demonstrates the time-variant (TV) Doppler power characteristics of human activities using measured channel state information (CSI). We model the measured CSI as a complex channel transfer function corresponding to a 3D non-stationary multipath fading channel consisting of a fixed transmitter, a fixed receiver, fixed scatterers representing fixed objects, and a cluster of moving scatterers representing a moving person performing some human activities. We demonstrate the relationship between the TV Doppler frequency caused by each moving scatterer and the rate of change of its corresponding TV propagation delay. Furthermore, we express the TV mean Doppler shift in terms of the pat…
Geometrical Modeling of Non-Stationary Polarimetric Vehicular Radio Channels
2019
This paper presents a geometry-based statistical model (GBSM) of polarimetric wideband multipath radio channels for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications. The proposed model captures the effects of depolarization caused by multipath propagation, and it also accounts for the non-stationary characteristics of wideband V2V channels. This is a novel feature, because the existing polarimetric channel models are built on the assumption that the channel is a wide-sense stationary random process. In the modeling framework described in this paper, the channel depolarization function is given by a linear transformation in the form of a simple rotation matrix. This linear transformation is transpare…
Evaluation of a Visual Tool for Early Patent Infringement Detection During Design
2019
Patent infringement detection usually implies research among documents in different forms, in both natural and unstructured language, often involving a lot of human resources and time. In order to ease this patent check process, we previously presented a visual tool to be used by designers themselves at any stage of the design process, providing them with useful and reliable information for deciding whether to steer their design away from potential patent infringements. In this work, we report on a usability study carried out on such a tool with 21 professional designers from industry in the field of mechanical engineering. The outcome of our study shows that our tool is very well accepted …
Assessing 4th Grade Students’ Computational Thinking through Scratch Programming Projects
2020
Computational thinking (CT) has been introduced in primary schools worldwide. However, rich classroom-based evidence and research on how to assess and support students’ CT through programming are particularly scarce. This empirical study investigates 4th grade students’ (N = 57) CT in a comparatively comprehensive and fine-grained manner by assessing their Scratch projects (N = 325) with a framework that was revised from previous studies to aim towards enhancing CT. The results demonstrate in detail the various coding patterns and code constructs the students programmed in assorted projects throughout a programming course and the extent to which they had conceptual encounters with CT. Notab…
The Integration and Sharing of Resources for a New Quality of Living
2014
In this chapter, the issues of sharing of information and of information technologies use are dealt with from the juridical point of view, thr…
Genomic Testing for Human Health and Disease Across the Life Cycle: Applications and Ethical, Legal, and Social Challenges
2019
The expanding use of genomic technologies encompasses all phases of life, from the embryo to the elderly, and even the posthumous phase. In this paper, we present the spectrum of genomic healthcare applications, and describe their scope and challenges at different stages of the life cycle. The integration of genomic technology into healthcare presents unique ethical issues that challenge traditional aspects of healthcare delivery. These challenges include the different definitions of utility as applied to genomic information; the particular characteristics of genetic data that influence how it might be protected, used and shared; and the difficulties applying existing models of informed con…
