Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is the most common arrhythmia after cardiac surgery in conventional extracorporeal circulation (CECC), with an incidence of 15–50%. The POAF pathophysiology is not known, and no blood biomarkers exist. However, an association between increased ferritin levels and increased AF risk, has been demonstrated. Echocardiographic diagnosis of Candida endocarditis of the tricuspid valve and of the right atrium in a young infant.

Systemic candidiasis developed in a seven-week-old premature baby after 6 weeks treatment with antibiotics for suspected septicemia. At that time the echocardiogram showed a dense layer of echoes posteriorly to the anterior tricuspid leaflet during atrial systole. The diagnosis of Candida endocarditis with vegetations on the tricuspid valve and with right atrial thrombus secondary to the Candida infection was verified by autopsy.

This retrospective and descriptive 4-year study was undertaken to describe cardiac changes in subclinical and overt hyperthyroidism.We revised the charts of 386 consecutive cardiopathic women whose blood samples were referred to the Radioimmunoassay Laboratory to evaluate thyroid function from 1 January 1997 through 31 December 2000.After excluding women because euthyroid or hypothyroid, or taking amiodarone and women with hypertension, rheumatic disease, myocardial infarction, a total of 31 hyperthyroid women were thus selected for the study: 19 with subclinical hyperthyroidism and 12 with overt hyperthyroidism. The current emphasis on left ventricular diastolic dysfunction must be redirected to microvascular inflammation and endothelial dysfunction that leads to cardiomyocyte remodeling and enhanced interstitial collagen deposition.
