Nano-structured myelin: new nanovesicles for targeted delivery to white matter and microglia, from brain-to-brain

2021

Neurodegenerative diseases affect millions of people worldwide and the presence of various physiological barriers limits the accessibility to the brain and reduces the efficacy of various therapies. Moreover, new carriers having targeting properties to specific brain regions and cells are needed in order to improve therapies for the brain disorder treatment. In this study, for the first time, Myelin nanoVesicles (hereafter defined MyVes) from brain-extracted myelin were produced. The MyVes have an average diameter of 100–150 nm, negative zeta potential, spheroidal morphology, and contain lipids and the key proteins of the myelin sheath. Furthermore, they exhibit good cytocompatibility. The…

An atmospheric model for computing direct and diffuse solar radiation

1979

Abstract This paper proposes an atmospheric model, which extends the computation of the direct radiation given by Cole's model to the cloudy sky and shows a method to calculate the diffuse radiation. Therefore the monthly average values of the global radiation incident on a horizontal surface at Palermo are computed by this method. These values are compared with the experimental data provided by the Istituto di Idraulica Agraria, Universita di Palermo and generally exhibit a mean deviation not more than 10 per cent. The deviations become lower than 8 per cent taking into account the effect of the underlying surface albedo. In order to better verify the validity of the proposed method, it sh…

An atmospheric model applied to some actinometric stations of Sicily

1980

Abstract In this paper the application of an atmospheric model proposed by S. Barbaro et al. in a previous work for computing the direct and diffuse solar radiation is extended to some actinometric stations in Sicily, namely Gela, Messina, Pantelleria, Trapani and Ustica. The comparison of the monthly average values of the global radiation computed by this method with the experimental data shows a good agreement, that confirms the encouraging results obtained for Palermo in the previous work. This further test of the validity of the proposed model allows this one may be used with good reliability to predict the radiation on locations lacking in actinometric instruments. Finally, the influen…

Fooled by Data-Mining: The Real-Life Performance of Market Timing with Moving Averages

2013

In this paper, we revisit the myths regarding the superior performance of market timing strategies based on moving average and time-series momentum rules. These active timing strategies are very appealing to investors because of their extraordinary simplicity and because they promise substantial advantages over their passive counterparts (see, for example, the paper by M. Faber (2007) "A Quantitative Approach to Tactical Asset Allocation" published in the Journal of Wealth Management). However, the ``too good to be true" reported performance of these market timing rules raises a legitimate concern as to whether this performance is realistic and whether investors can expect that future perfo…

The Role of Formal Education in Developing Critical Thinking Skills of Engineering Students

2020

The hereby paper intends to acknowledge and discuss the concept of critical thinking and the influence of this ability on engineering students. The purpose of this research is to establish the criteria according to which some students think more critically compared to other students in the same field of study. Logic is a term that seems simple, although very few know how to access that logical part of the human brain. This research has shown that the students’ level of critical thinking is not related to the year of study. Therefore, there are no activities in faculties that have a significant influence on the development of critical thinking. Moreover, it has resulted that female participa…

Effects of Mobility Programmes on University Students' Academic Performance

2018

The number of students participating in mobility programmes has increased enormously over the years. The reasons are diverse and may range from personal growth to better employability prospects, together with improvement in foreign language skills and intercultural awareness. Mobility programmes receive generous funding from the European Commission, therefore their outcomes should be measured and evaluated. This paper focuses on a specific one: the academic effects of mobility programmes. We analyse whether there is an improvement in the academic performance of the students who participate in mobility programmes and, if this is the case, whether it is sustained over time. We use a broad dat…

Trend following with momentum versus moving averages: a tale of differences

2020

Despite the ever-growing interest in trend following and a series of publications in academic journals, there is a dearth of theoretical results on the properties of trend-following rules. Our pape...

Market Timing with Moving Averages: Anatomy and Performance of Trading Rules

2015

The underlying concept behind the technical trading indicators based on moving averages of prices has remained unaltered for more than half of a century. The development in this field has consisted in proposing new ad-hoc rules and using more elaborate types of moving averages in the existing rules, without any deeper analysis of commonalities and differences between miscellaneous choices for trading rules and moving averages. The first contribution of this paper is to uncover the anatomy of market timing rules with moving averages. Our analysis offers a new and very insightful reinterpretation of the existing rules and demonstrates that the computation of every trading indicator can equiva…

Imputation Strategies for Missing Data in Environmental Time Series for An Unlucky Situation

2005

After a detailed review of the main specific solutions for treatment of missing data in environmental time series, this paper deals with the unlucky situation in which, in an hourly series, missing data immediately follow an absolutely anomalous period, for which we do not have any similar period to use for imputation. A tentative multivariate and multiple imputation is put forward and evaluated; it is based on the possibility, typical of environmental time series, to resort to correlations or physical laws that characterize relationships between air pollutants.

Forecasting container transshipment in Germany

2009

International audience; In this paper, we examine container transshipment at German ports using the seasonal ARIMA (SARIMA) model and the Holt-Winters exponential smoothing approach. Our models are designed especially to take account of the seasonal behavior of the quarterly data used. We consider the dynamic development in this sector for the whole container throughput and also the destinations Asia, Europe and North America, which are the world's three main economic regions. Our data runs from the first quarter of 1989 to the fourth quarter of 2006. We provide detailed quarterly forecasts for the year 2007 and 2008. According to forecasting error measures such as Mean Square Error and The…
