Missense and nonsense mutations in melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) gene of different goat breeds: association with red and black coat colour phenotype…
2009
Abstract Background Agouti and Extension loci control the relative amount of eumelanin and pheomelanin production in melanocytes that, in turn, affects pigmentation of skin and hair. The Extension locus encodes the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) whose permanent activation, caused by functional mutations, results in black coat colour, whereas other inactivating mutations cause red coat colour in different mammals. Results The whole coding region of the MC1R gene was sequenced in goats of six different breeds showing different coat colours (Girgentana, white cream with usually small red spots in the face; Maltese, white with black cheeks and ears; Derivata di Siria, solid red; Murciano-Granad…
Nitrogen interstitial defects in silicon. A quantum mechanical investigation of the structural, electronic and vibrational properties
2019
The vibrational features of eight interstitial nitrogen related defects in silicon have been investigated at the first principles quantum mechanical level by using a periodic supercell approach, a hybrid functionals, an all electron Gaussian type basis set and the Crystal code. The list includes defects that will be indicated as Ni (one N atom forming a bridge between two Si atoms), Ni-Ns (one interstitial and one substitutional N atom linked to the same Si atom), Ni-Ni (two Ni defects linked to the same couple of silicon atoms) and Ni-Sii-Ni (two Ni defects linked to the same interstitial silicon atom). Four 〈0 0 1〉 split interstitial (dumbbell) defects have also been considered, in which …
Zwitterionic codeine-derived methacrylate monoliths for enantioselective capillary electrochromatography of chiral acids and chiral bases
2018
Thiol-ene click reaction of N-acetyl-L-cysteine methyl ester to codeine, followed by reaction with allyl isocyanate and hydrolysis to the corresponding zwitterionic chiral selector and its subsequent bonding to the surface of a methacrylate monolith provided a new chiral capillary column for enantiomer separation of chiral acids and chiral bases. First, the epoxy groups of a poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene dimethacrylate) monolith were converted into amine residues, followed by reaction with allylglycidyl ether. In this way, a spacer arm was bonded to the surface before coating and cross-linking poly(3-mercaptopropyl methylsiloxane) (PMPMS) via radical addition (thiol-ene click react…
Indicatori di tempestività di esecuzione dell’intervento in area ortopedica e cardiologica. Valutazione di eventuali comportamenti opportunistici att…
2013
Links and Bifurcations in Nonsingular Morse–Smale Systems
1997
Wada's theorem classifies the set of periodic orbits in NMS systems on S3 as links, that can be written in terms of six operations. This characterization allows us to study the topological restrictions that links require to suffer a given codimension one bifurcation. Moreover, these results are reproduced in the case of NMS systems with rotational symmetries, introducing new geometrical tools.
Automatic Sleep Stage Identification with Time Distributed Convolutional Neural Network
2021
Polysomnography (PSG), the gold standard for sleep stage classification, requires a sleep expert for scoring and is both resource-intensive and expensive. Many researchers currently focus on the real-time classification of the sleep stages based on biomedical signals, such as Electroencephalograph (EEG) and electrooculography (EOG). However, most of the research work is based on machine learning models with multiple signal inputs or hand-engineered features requiring prior knowledge of the sleep domain. We propose a novel encoded Time-Distributed Convolutional Neural Network (TDConvNet) to automatically classify sleep stages based on a single raw PSG signal. The TDConvNet can infer sleep st…
unitas: the universal tool for annotation of small RNAs
2017
AbstractBackgroundNext generation sequencing is a key technique in small RNA biology research that has led to the discovery of functionally different classes of small non-coding RNAs in the past years. However, reliable annotation of the extensive amounts of small non-coding RNA data produced by high-throughput sequencing is time-consuming and requires robust bioinformatics expertise. Moreover, existing tools have a number of shortcomings including a lack of sensitivity under certain conditions, limited number of supported species or detectable sub-classes of small RNAs.ResultsHere we introduce unitas, an out-of-the-box ready software for complete annotation of small RNA sequence datasets, …
Creating Digital Musical Instruments With and for Children: Including Vocal Sketching as a Method for Engaging in Codesign
2020
International audience; A class of master of science students and a group of preschool children codesigned new digital musical instruments based on workshop interviews involving vocal sketching, a method for imitating and portraying sounds. The aim of the study was to explore how the students and children would approach vocal sketching as one of several design methods. The children described musical instruments to the students using vocal sketching and other modalities (verbal, drawing, gestures). The resulting instruments built by the students were showcased at the Swedish Museum of Performing Arts in Stockholm. Although all the children tried vocal sketching during preparatory tasks, few …
Codesigning technology for a voluntary-sector organization
2019
© 2019 Khushnood Naqshbandi, Simon Hoermann, David Milne, Dorian Peters, Benjamin Davies, Sophie Potter, & Rafael A. Calvo. This paper presents an investigation into the experiences and perceptions of volunteers and community managers of an Australian voluntary-sector organization that supports young help-seeking people. The process focused specifically on the design of a chat tool, a rudimentary version of which was conceptualized and tested during a trial completed prior to this study. The process explored the motivations and experiences of these volunteers using a codesign approach, which led to the development of specific features of the chat tool that were tailored to the nature of the…
