Divided Wall Column Modeling and Simulation in an Open-Source Environment

2020

The divided wall column (DWC) can achieve sharp separations of three or more components in a single shell, substituting conventional sequences of two or more binary distillation columns, with lower expenses. Despite these advantages, DWC models are not available in commercial chemical process simulators. To simulate DWC, users must employ instances of conventional column model and couple them in different configurations. In this paper, a DWC model was developed in EMSO (Environment for Modeling, Simulation and Optimization). DWC model was then used for simulating the separation of an equimolar mixture of three hydrocarbons. Results show that, depending on the number of trays, DWC presented …

Structure and properties ofn-alkyldimethylsilyl bonded silica reversed-phase packings

1978

Summary The effects of the modifier functionality and the chain length ofn-alkylchlorosilanes on the surface structure of packings and on their retention behaviour in reversed-phase chromatography were investigated. Comparative retention studies on three silica packings that had been treated to maximum conversion withn-octyltrichlorosilane (I),n-octylmethyldichlorosilane (II) andn-octyldimethylmonochlorosilane (III) showed that the most pronounced reversed-phase character is obtained by using III as the modifying reagent. A series ofn-alkyldimethylsilyl bonded silica packings were prepared with widely differingn-alkyl chain lengths. Although the packings are very hydrophobic, the maximum su…

Aquatic biodiversity and saline lakes: Lake Bogoria National Reserve, Kenya

2003

Lake Bogoria, in the Rift Valley of Kenya is an extreme saline lake (conductivity 40–80 mS cm-1, alkalinity 1500 m equ 1-1). It is hydrologically more stable than the other, endorheic lakes in Kenya, because it is deep — maximum depth at present just over 10 m in an area of 3000 ha — and so does not have periods when it is dry. It is ecologically simple, with only one species dominating the phytoplankton — the cyanobacterium ‘spirulina’, Arthrospira fusiformis. Its biomass and productivity were very high — biomass between 38 and 365 μg 1-1 chlorophyll ‘a’ and 3.4–21 x 103 coils ml-1 and net production between 0.24 and 1 gm C m3 h, the latter in a narrow zone of less than a metre. There were…

Diel vertical migration by Daphnia longispina in a Spanish lake: Genetic sources of distributional variation

1995

Individuals of many zooplankton species undergo diel vertical migration in which they move toward the surface after sunset and return to deeper waters at dawn. However, even when vertical migration can be clearly demonstrated by mapping the distributions of individuals at noon and midnight, at any given time the population is usually scattered over ‘a broad range of depths. This paper focuses on a major potential source of the variance associated with depth distributions. We have used electrophoretic analysis of isozymes to identify “clones” of Daphnia longispina in a Spanish lake. In September 199 1, two clones constituted 5 5% of the individuals collected at noon and midnight on each oftw…

Population size estimation of larval coregonids in large lakes: Stratified sampling design with a simple prediction model for vertical distribution

2009

Abstract The lake-specific vertical distribution of larval coregonids was assessed annually in Finnish lakes by bongo net sampling. The effect of inter-annual and inter-lake variation in vertical distributions on population estimates of larval coregonids were analysed in 1999–2008. The vertical distribution of newly hatched vendace ( Coregonus albula (L.)) and European whitefish ( Coregonus lavaretus L. s.l.) larvae was analysed and high inter-annual and lake-specific variation in the larval vertical distribution was found. Generally, in both littoral and pelagic areas, larvae were aggregated near the water surface, mostly in the top 30 cm layer. We compared observed and predicted density e…

Some recent results on the compressive and flexural behaviour of composite members

2005

Experiemntal results from compression and flexural tests on steel tubulare columns having circular or rectangular transverse cross-section and infilled with plain or fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) are analysez. for composite members differenti lengths and different dimensions of transverse cross-section were considered in order to assess the influence on behavior in flexure and in compression. The fiber investigated with different percentage were syntetic, carbon and deformed steel fibers. The constituent materials were characterised through compressive and split tests on conconcrete cylinders. Load.shortning and load-delection curves were determined including the sotnening response. The use of phage FCL-2 as an alternative to chemotherapy against columnaris disease in aquaculture

2015

Flavobacterium columnare, the causative agent of columnaris disease in fish, causes millions of dollars of losses in the US channel catfish industry alone, not to mention aquaculture industry worldwide. Novel methods are needed for the control and treatment of bacterial diseases in aquaculture to replace traditionally used chemotherapies. A potential solution could be the use of phages, i.e., bacterial viruses, host-specific and self-enriching particles that can be can easily distributed via water flow. We examined the efficacy of phages to combat columnaris disease. A previously isolated phage, FCL-2, infecting F. columnare, was characterized by sequencing. The 47 142 bp genome of the phag…

Unravelling the bacterial diversity found in the semi-arid Tablas de Daimiel National Park wetland (central Spain)

2010

Our knowledge of microbial diversity in the environment is still limited, and there are many species as yet unidentified in both soil and water. Studies of the microbial diversity of wetland ecosystems have been neglected for years, as is the case of Tablas de Daimiel National Park (TDNP), a Spanish semi-arid wetland system of international importance in terms of waterfowl. We report the bacterial diversity of water column, sediment (upper and lower layers) and biofilm samples from the TDNP system using a 16S rRNA gene library approach. A sequence comparison of the 703 clones obtained revealed a number of bacterial phylogroups unreported to date. Bacterial diversity was high (Shannon values…

The effect of the pore structure and zeta potential of porous polymer monoliths on separation performance in ion-exchange mode.

2007

Most often, in bioseparations involving charged macromolecules, the chromatographic systems have low Reynolds and high Peclet numbers. For such systems, an expression is developed and presented in this work for evaluating the throughput in polymeric monoliths where ion-exchange adsorption occurs, as a function of (i) the pressure drop along the length of the monolith, (ii) the functional form and width of the throughpore-size distribution of the monolith, and (iii) the magnitude of the zeta potential on the surface of the throughpores of the monolith. Gaussian and log-normal throughpore-size distributions whose mean throughpore-size and standard deviation values are based on experimentally …
