Abstract Background and purpose The insular cortex serves a wide variety of functions in humans, ranging from sensory and affective processing to high-level cognition. Hence, insular dysfunction may result in several different presentations. Ischemic strokes limited to the insular territory are rare and deserve a better characterization, to be quickly recognized and to receive appropriate treatment (e.g. thrombolysis). Osteonecrosis of the jaws by intravenous bisphosphonates and osteoradionecrosis : a comparative study

Aims: We analyze the possible clinical differences between bone jaw exposed areas in ONJ (osteonecrosis of the jaws) and ORN (osteoradionecrosis). Patients and method: Group 1 was composed with 53 ONJ cases and group 2 with 20 ORN cases. In both groups we analyzed, the major size of the exposed bone areas, the number of exposed areas, the location on the jaws and the presence of others associated and severe complications, such as skin fistulas and jaw fractures. We also investigated the possible local aetiology or trigger factor of the lesions. Stage-dependent agreement between cerebrospinal fluid proteins and FDG-PET findings in Alzheimer's disease.

Cerebral hypometabolism and abnormal levels of amyloid beta (Aβ), total (t-tau) and phosphorylated tau (ptau) proteins in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are established biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We examined the agreement between these biomarkers in a single center study of patients with AD of severity extending over a wide range. Forty seven patients (MMSE 21.4 ± 3.6, range 13-28 points) with incipient and probable AD underwent positron emission tomography with [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG-PET) and lumbar puncture for CSF assays of Aβ1-42, p-tau181, and t-tau. Capillary flow and diameter changes during reperfusion after global cerebral ischemia studied by intravital video microscopy.

The reaction of cerebral capillaries to ischemia is unclear. Based on Hossmann's observation of postischemic “delayed hypoperfusion,” we hypothesized that capillary flow is decreased during reperfusion because of increased precapillary flow resistance. To test this hypothesis, we measured cerebral capillary erythrocyte velocity and diameter changes by intravital microscopy in gerbils. Dysarthria and lacunar stroke

We investigated the supranuclear tracts involved in speech production in 8 patients with dysarthria associated with a single lacunar stroke.Magnetic resonance imaging revealed the lesion site in 7 out of 8 patients. We tested corticobulbar tract function using transcranial magnetic stimulation and demonstrated impairment of the corticolingual projections in all the patients and in 5 patients impairment of the corticofacial projections. Role of Associated Cortical Lesions in Motor Partial Seizures and Lenticulostriate Infarcts

In a population-based study, we evaluated seizures occurring in the first 15 days after strokes among 1,640 consecutive patients who had ischemic (814 infarcts with atheroma and 126 with cardiogenic embolism, 273 lacunar infarcts, 259 transient ischemic attacks) or hemorrhagic stroke (129 supratentorial hematomas and 24 subarachnoïd hemorrhage) on computed tomography (CT) scan. Ninety patients had an epileptic seizure in the first 15 days after stroke onset. CSF APPsα and Phosphorylated Tau Protein Levels in Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia of Alzheimer's Type

We exploratively measured APPs alpha, a secreted fragment of the non-amyloidogenic cleavage of amyloid precursor protein via a-secretase, and tau protein phosphorylated at threonine 181 (p tau) in the cerebrospinal fluid of 10 patients with mild cognitive impairment, 20 patients with dementia of Alzheimer's type, and 10 controls.
