IM30 triggers membrane fusion in cyanobacteria and chloroplasts
2015
The thylakoid membrane of chloroplasts and cyanobacteria is a unique internal membrane system harbouring the complexes of the photosynthetic electron transfer chain. Despite their apparent importance, little is known about the biogenesis and maintenance of thylakoid membranes. Although membrane fusion events are essential for the formation of thylakoid membranes, proteins involved in membrane fusion have yet to be identified in photosynthetic cells or organelles. Here we show that IM30, a conserved chloroplast and cyanobacterial protein of approximately 30 kDa binds as an oligomeric ring in a well-defined geometry specifically to membranes containing anionic lipids. Triggered by Mg2+, membr…
Coupling of Cholesterol and Cone-shaped Lipids in Bilayers Augments Membrane Permeabilization by the Cholesterol-specific Toxins Streptolysin O and V…
2001
Abstract Vibrio cholerae cytolysin (VCC) forms oligomeric pores in lipid bilayers containing cholesterol. Membrane permeabilization is inefficient if the sterol is embedded within bilayers prepared from phosphatidylcholine only but is greatly enhanced if the target membrane also contains ceramide. Although the enhancement of VCC action is stereospecific with respect to cholesterol, we show here that no such specificity applies to the two stereocenters in ceramide; all four stereoisomers of ceramide enhanced VCC activity in cholesterol-containing bilayers. A wide variety of ceramide analogs were as effective asd-erythro-ceramide, as was diacylglycerol, suggesting that the effect of ceramide …
Microscale synthesis of phosphatidyl-[3H]choline from 1,2-diacylglycerol. Assessment of isomerization by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chrom…
1995
The synthesis of rac-1-palmitoyl-2-oleoylglycero-3-phospho-[3H]choline of high specific activity was carried out on a microscale by making 7 mumol of rac-1-palmitoyl-2-oleoylglycerol react first with an equimolar amount of POCl3 and then of [3H]choline. After purification by thin-layer chromatography and normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography and normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), the yield of the synthesis of [3H]phosphatidylcholine (120 microCi/mumol) was 22%. rac-1-Palmitoyl-2-oleoylglycerol was purified before use by reversed-phase HPLC under conditions which were nonisomerizing and allowed the separation of 1,2- and 1,3-isomers of diacylglycerol. E…
Liquid–liquid equilibria of the systems isobutyl acetate+isobutyl alcohol+water and isobutyl acetate+isobutyl alcohol+glycerol at different temperatu…
2008
Abstract In this work, experimental liquid–liquid equilibria (LLE) data of the isobutyl acetate + isobutyl alcohol + water and isobutyl acetate + isobutyl alcohol + glycerol systems are presented. The LLE of both systems have been measured at 283.15 and 323.15 K. The NRTL and UNIQUAC models were applied to both ternary systems. The interaction parameters obtained from both models successfully correlated the equilibrium compositions. The experimental tie lines were compared to the values predicted by the UNIFAC method. Moreover, the solvent capabilities of water and glycerol were compared.
Agarose/κ-carrageenan-based hydrogel film enriched with natural plant extracts for the treatment of cutaneous wounds.
2020
Abstract Hydrogels for complex and chronic wound dressings must be conformable, absorb and retain wound exudates and maintain hydration. They can incorporate and release bioactive molecules that can accelerate the healing process. Wound dressings have to be in contact with the wound and epidermis, even for long periods, without causing adverse effects. Hydrogel dressing formulations based on biopolymers derived from terrestrial or marine flora can be relatively inexpensive and well tolerated. In the present article hydrogel films composed by agarose (1.0 wt%), κ-carrageenan at three different concentrations (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt%) and glycerol (3.0 wt%) were prepared without recourse to cros…

Meritare il perdono, meritare la memoria: equilibrio del discorso e verdetto della storia nella pro Marcello di Cicerone
2017
In the pro Marcello Cicero focuses on the merits of Marcellus and Caesar. The Marcellus’ virtutes (in continuity with his familiar tradition) confirm that his return may not represent a danger; his exile indeed is a real damage to the Republic. The theme of memory then allows Cicero to meditate on Caesar's politics: only defending the integrity of the state with his clementia, the statesman will obtain glory and immortality. The issue about the responsibilities of the Pompeian pars is also examined: many people have followed Pompeius not for ideological choices but only because of an error. Then Caesar must be able to propose a ‘good’ victory, or, in other words, an ethical and political mo…
