A Strategy for the Prediction of the Response of Hysteretic Systems: A Base for Capacity Assessment of Buildings under Seismic Load
2014
A statistical non linearization method is used to approximate systems modeled by the Bouc differential equa- tion and excited by a Gaussian white noise external load. To this aim restricted potential models (RPM) are used, which are suitable for an extended number of nonlinear problems as have been proved several times. Since the solution of RPM is known by the probabilistic point of view, all statistical characteristics can be derived at once with advantages by the computational point of view. Hence, this paper discusses the possibility to determine sets of parameters characterizing po- tential models that are valid for describing a hysteretic behavior. In this way the characterization of …
Analysis of Renovation Works in Cappuccinelli Social Housing District in Trapani
2022
The refurbishment of public residential districts represents a current and complex problem. The Cappuccinelli Social Housing (SH) district in Trapani, designed in the late 1950s by Michele Valori and built during the 1960s, is emblematic of the architectural quality and technological innovation of the time it was designed, but at the same time represents the physical and social decay that occurred just after its construction. The neighborhood was examined through a combination of inspections and documentary research. The inspections were conducted for the entire district in order to identify the recurrent external degradation of building components and the related causes, both physical and …
A New Solution for Sea Wave Energy Harvesting, the Proposal of an Ironless Linear Generator
2020
The paper investigates an innovative ironless linear generator, installable inside a wave energy converter, in order to produce electricity from sea waves. This energy source is considered strategic for the future, especially in small islands
A magnetostrictive generator for sensors network
2017
In this paper we present a vibration harvesting electric power generator based on magnetostrictive effect for sensors network in hazardous area and we validate it experimentally. The generator has been designed by using Dynamic Preisach hysteresis Model (DPM). DPM is a development of classical Preisach Model which is able to include dynamical features in the mathematical model of hysteresis. We measure the output power capability of the generator and we estimate its power density generation capability.
Coupled Electric and Hydraulic Control of a PRS Turbine in a Real Transport Water Network
2019
Although many devices have recently been proposed for pressure regulation and energy harvesting in water distribution and transport networks, very few applications are still documented in the scientific literature. A new in-line Banki turbine with positive outflow pressure and a mobile regulating flap, named Power Recovery System (PRS), was installed and tested in a real water transport network for the regulation of pressure and flow rate. The PRS turbine was directly connected to a 55 kW asynchronous generator with variable rotational velocity, and coupled to an inverter. The start-up tests showed how automatic adjustment of the flap position and the runner velocity variation are able to c…
Review on Life Cycle Assessment of Solar Photovoltaic Panels
2020
The photovoltaic (PV) sector has undergone both major expansion and evolution over the last decades, and currently, the technologies already marketed or still in the laboratory/research phase are numerous and very different. Likewise, in order to assess the energy and environmental impacts of these devices, life cycle assessment (LCA) studies related to these systems are always increasing. The objective of this paper is to summarize and update the current literature of LCA applied to different types of grid-connected PV, as well as to critically analyze the results related to energy and environmental impacts generated during the life cycle of PV technologies, from 1st generation (traditiona…
Development of energy-saving innovative hydraulic mortars reusing spent coffee ground for applications in construction
2023
This paper reports the development of green bio-composite mortars, obtained reusing spent coffee ground (SCG), an agri-food residue, in the light of the Circular Economy approach. This process can boost the sustainability in Construction and proposes an alternative to SCG disposal in landfill, potentially dangerous to humans and the environment. For the first time, specimens were produced and compared using different blends of conventional hydraulic binders (ordinary Portland cement and natural hydraulic lime); SCG partially substituted sand (up to 15 wt.%, with a 2.5% increment) for the aggregate mix. The manufacturing process was performed at ambient conditions (20°C, 65% RH) resulting hi…
MODELLING, OPTIMIZATION, AND 3E-ANALYSIS OF DISH-STIRLING CONCENTRATING SOLAR POWER SYSTEMS
2022
User behavior in Smart and Sustainable Offices (SSO)
2017
Smart and Sustainable Offices (SSO) require synergies between technologies and users behaviors. The sociotechnical approach considers users’ motives, attitudes, cognitions and behaviors when designing work environments. This note will describe those phenomena in office environments. It will also present a set of tools to assess those phenomena and will provide guidelines to improve them.
Energy and environmental assessment of retrofit actions on a residential building
2014
Energy and environmental performances of buildings strictly depend on many factors related to the choice of construction materials, technical equipment, installation and use. In the following chapter a set of retrofit actions to improve the thermal performance of an existing conventional building is presented. The energy and environmental assessment of these actions is carried out following a life cycle approach. The embodied energy and the environmental impacts arisen from the production, transportation and installation phases of the required materials and components are calculated. Further, energy saving and environmental benefits and drawbacks concerning the assessed retrofit actions are…
