Clinica Bamboo

2012

The space has been designed as a metaphor of nature: the ground has tourned to water, the roof remains the starry sky and the partitions develop as white clouds. The hearth of the clinic is a covered “square” that connects the entrance with a huge glass wall that looks directly towards the city. Here, a small waterfall diffuses its sound throughout the architectural spaces. The design is meant to generate organic forms through the use of simple, cheap and hand-made technologies taht work as instruments. Small modular elements are assembled in order to create complex compositions. The materials have been chosen to realize a contemporary interpretation of the millenarian tradition of bamboo b…

Cusano e Piccolomini a Basilea

2011

The essay intends to outline some aspects of the human and intellectual relationship between Nicola Cusano and Enea Silvio Piccolomini starting from the experiences they shared during the lively initial phases of the ecumenical Council of Basel (1431-1449). Both represent, though on different operational planes, achievement of awareness of their epoch, that is to say the best of European humanistic culture that intervened, in a perfect blending of active life and contemplative life, to solve one of the most complex and dramatic political-cultural issues of the day.

Colombeau Algebras and convolutions generated by self-adjoint operators

2017

The role of convolution of functions in the construction of Colombeau algebras of generalized functions is analyzed, with particular referring to the commutative relation with the derivation operator. The possibility to consider the A-convolution, with A an unbounded self-adjoint operator in Hilbert space, is discussed. K

MR3377117 Reviewed Giordano, Paolo; Nigsch, Eduard A. Unifying order structures for Colombeau algebras. Math. Nachr. 288 (2015), no. 11-12, 1286–1302…

2015

Colombeau Algebras are differential algebras of generalized functions (that include the space of distributions) that are defined using a quotient set procedure involving particular classes of nets in a basic space E = (C∞(Ω))A, where Ω is an open subset of R n and A is an index set. The choice of such nets depends mainly on their asymptotic behavior over a suitable index set A. Many variants of Colombeau Algebras existing in the literature occur mainly due to different choices of the index set (and to the choice of asymptotic behavior). A purpose of this paper is to formally unify some of these algebras, redefining the asymptotic behavior on an abstract (pre-ordered) set of indices, and gen…

Queen loss increases worker survival in leaf-cutting ants under paraquat-induced oxidative stress

2021

Longevity is traded off with fecundity in most solitary species, but the two traits are positively linked in social insects. In ants, the most fecund individuals (queens and kings) live longer than the non-reproductive individuals, the workers. In many species, workers may become fertile following queen loss, and recent evidence suggests that worker fecundity extends worker lifespan. We postulated that this effect is in part owing to improved resilience to oxidative stress, and tested this hypothesis in three Myrmicine ants: Temnothorax rugatulus, and the leaf-cutting ants Atta colombica and Acromyrmex echinatior . We removed the queen from colonies to induce worker reproduction and subjec…

Caracterización morfológica y molecular de Paragonimus caliensis Little 1968 y Paragonimus mexicanus Miyazaki & Ishii 1968 (Digenea: Paragonimidae) e…

2018

The Phycosiphon record in the Ladrilleros-Juanchaco section (Miocene, Colombian Pacific): palaeoecological implications

2018

Miocene rocks of the Ladrilleros-Juanchaco section, located on the NW margin of South America, contain a high diverse and abundant trace fossil assemblage. The relative abundance of Phycosiphon, together with its morphological variations, provides new insights into the environmental conditions. Detailed outcrop stratigraphic, ichnological, and geochemical analyses carried out in the section focused on the trace fossil assemblages (distribution, relative abundance), ichnofabric index, and, especially, in the general ichnological features of Phycosiphon . In addition, the detailed photographic documentation and the use of the digital image treatment technique facilitate the precise study of …
