Conductance of potassium halides near the temperature of maximum density of water

1981

The conductances of dilute aqueous solutions of KCl, KBr, and KI have been measured over the temperature range 2 to 8°C and have been analyzed by the Fuoss-Hsia equation. The ionic Walden products at infinite dilution have been discussed in terms of local viscosity. The temperature dependence of these products suggest that near the temperature of maximum density of water, the structure-breaking ability of these ions changes in a regular way.

Complexation of the potassium ion by diaza crown compounds in aqueous solutions

1988

The conductance behavior of potassium nitrate in water with and without 1,7,10,16-tetraoxa-4,13-diazacyclooctandecane[2.2] and 4,7,13,16,21,24-hexaoxa-1,10-diazabicyclo-8.8.8-exacosane[2.2.2] macrocyclic ligands have been studied in order to analyze the complexation behavior of potassium cations in water. The absence of the complexation found in the [2.2] system is discussed in terms of the ligand structural features (presence of hydrogen bond donor and acceptor sites). The ion pair association constant of potassium cryptate as obtained from conductance measurements is also reported and discussed.

Properties of mixed colloidal crystals

2007

We prepared colloidal crystals from aqueous suspensions of spherical, charged polystyrene spheres under deionised conditions. Using a home-built multipurpose light scattering apparatus we measured the static structure factor, the static shear modulus and the intermediate scattering function. In addition we also monitored also the conductivity as a function of the composition and the particle number density. For the mixture investigated the data are well described assuming the formation of randomly substituted body-centered-cubic crystals.

Aqueous block copolymer-surfactant mixtures and their ability in solubilizing chlorinated organic compounds. A thermodynamic and SANS study.

2006

Within the topic of surfactant enhanced solubilization of additives sparingly soluble in water, volumetric, solubility, conductivity, and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments on mixtures composed of alpha,omega-dichloroalkane, surfactant, copolymer, and water were carried out at 298 K. The triblock copolymers (ethylene oxide)132(propylene oxide)50(ethylene oxide)132 (F108) and (ethylene oxide)76(propylene oxide)29(ethylene oxide)76 (F68) were chosen to investigate the role of the molecular weight keeping constant the hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratio. The selected surfactants are sodium decanoate (NaDec) and decyltrimethylammonium bromide (DeTAB) with comparable hydrophobicity and …

Some working principles of heterogeneous photocatalysis by semiconductors

1993

The present paper outlines some of the principles which are the working base for the photocatalytic processes: we refer to those photocatalytic processes performed using irradiated semiconductors. The steps related to the photoproduction of electron-hole pairs and their separation are discussed. It is also shown how the step of pair separation induces the formation of various chemical species, some of which are useful for the oxidation reactions. It is also shown that in order to reach a detailed description of photocatalytic processes it is necessary to have the knowledge of both the electronic and the physicochemical features of the semiconductors. The paper finally reports a case study r…

Arginine-rich peptides are blockers of VR-1 channels with analgesic activity

2000

Vanilloid receptors (VRs) play a fundamental role in the transduction of peripheral tissue injury and/or inflammation responses. Molecules that antagonize VR channel activity may act as selective and potent analgesics. We report that synthetic arginine-rich hexapeptides block heterologously expressed VR-1 channels with submicromolar efficacy in a weak voltage-dependent manner, consistent with a binding site located near/at the entryway of the aqueous pore. Dynorphins, natural arginine-rich peptides, also blocked VR-1 activity with micromolar affinity. Notably, synthetic and natural arginine-rich peptides attenuated the ocular irritation produced by topical capsaicin application onto the eye…

Synthesis and structural and ionic conductivity studies of Na2ZrSi4O11

1996

The compound Na 2 ZrSi 4 O 1 1 has been prepared both by solid state synthesis and by the sol-gel technique via alkoxides. The structure of Na 2 ZrSi 4 O 11 was investigated by the Rietveld method using X-ray diffractometer data. The powder diffraction data show evidence for a triclinic distortion of the basic monoclinic structure. The ionic conductivity has been determined in the temperature interval 130-560°C using a.c. impedance measurements. The Na + ion mobility is limited, with E a =1.04 eV and σ(300°C)= 2-9 10 7 S/cm. Samples with Ta partially substituted for Zr, according to the formula Na 2-x (Zr 1-x Ta x )Si 4 O 11 with x ≤0.2, showed the same evidence for a triclinic distortion. …

Space charge and induced dipole relaxation in solid electrolytes

1996

The space charge relaxation and induced dipole relaxation in solid electrolytes is discussed. The di-electric responses of these relaxations gives a satisfactory fit to the universal conductivity behaviours in the frequency range from DC to infrared.

The Electrical Properties of Ba1-ySryZrxTi1-xO3Solid Solution

2011

A lead-free solid solution Ba0.80Sr0.20Ti0.75Zr0.25O3 was prepared by a conventional technology. The structure and morphology of investgated samples were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The studies of electric conductivity were performed depending on temperature and frequency of electric measuring field. The activation energy was calculated from the Arrhenius plots.
