Syn- and post-eruptive mechanism of the Alaskan Ukinrek Maars in 1977

2008

The two alkali olivine basaltic Ukinrek Maars (East Maar and West Maar) and one scoria cone within East Maar erupted within eleven days (March 30–April 9, 1977) on the Alaskan Peninsula, 13 km north of Mt. Peulik, an andesite volcano of the Aleutian Range. The East Maar, with a diameter of 300 m, is located within a small graben system striking N 1100 E, oblique to the Aleutian trench in a distance of 350 km. On these tensional faults two eruption centres occur: The East Maar and a scoria cone on the southeastern margin of its crater bottom. The scoria cone was active more or less during the whole eruption activity of East Maar. The West Maar, with a diameter of 140 m, is located just west …

Geodynamic setting of Upper Miocene to Quaternary alkaline basalts from Harrat al ‘Uwayrid (NW Saudi Arabia): Constraints from K Ar dating, chemical …

2019

Highlights • Volcanic activity of Harrat Uwayrid (NW Arabia) lasted from 8.2 to 0.3 Ma. • Alkali olivine basalts are followed by basanites, tephrites and tephriphonolites. • Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic ratios of all volcanic rocks suggest a PREMA source. • Different degrees of partial melting of amphibole-garnet-spinel lherzolite • Lithospheric mantle source rather than asthenosphere or plume-type mantle Abstract The volcanic field of Harrat ar Rahah-’Uwayrid (NW Saudi Arabia) consists of an older plateau basalt sequence that overlies Cambrian sandstone and younger cinder cones with smaller flows that are concentrated in the central part of this field. Petrographic and whole rock geochemical data ind…

La ceca de Baskunes

2018

Polylactic is a Sustainable, Low Absorption, Low Autofluorescence Alternative to Other Plastics for Microfluidic and Organ-on-Chip Applications

2020

Organ-on-chip (OOC) devices are miniaturized devices replacing animal models in drug discovery and toxicology studies. The majority of OOC devices are made from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), an elastomer widely used in microfluidic prototyping, but posing a number of challenges to experimentalists, including leaching of uncured oligomers and uncontrolled absorption of small compounds. Here we assess the suitability of polylactic acid (PLA) as a replacement material to PDMS for microfluidic cell culture and OOC applications. We changed the wettability of PLA substrates and demonstrated the functionalization method to be stable over a time period of at least 9 months. We successfully cultured …

Early adaptive response of the retina to a pro-diabetogenic diet: Impairment of cone response and gene expression changes in high-fructose fed rats

2015

The lack of plasticity of neurons to respond to dietary changes, such as high fat and high fructose diets, by modulating gene and protein expression has been associated with functional and behavioral impairments that can have detrimental consequences. The inhibition of high fat-induced rewiring of hypothalamic neurons induced obesity. Feeding rodents with high fructose is a recognized and widely used model to trigger obesity and metabolic syndrome. However the adaptive response of the retina to short term feeding with high fructose is poorly documented. We therefore aimed to characterize both the functional and gene expression changes in the neurosensory retina of Brown Norway rats fed duri…

Evidence for hypothalamic ketone bodies sensing: impact on food intake and peripheral metabolic responses in mice

2016

Monocarboxylates have been implicated in the control of energy homeostasis. Among them, the putative role of ketone bodies produced notably during high-fat diet (HFD) has not been thoroughly explored. In this study, we aimed to determine the impact of a specific rise in cerebral ketone bodies on food intake and energy homeostasis regulation. A carotid infusion of ketone bodies was performed on mice to stimulate sensitive brain areas for 6 or 12 h. At each time point, food intake and different markers of energy homeostasis were analyzed to reveal the consequences of cerebral increase in ketone body level detection. First, an increase in food intake appeared over a 12-h period of brain keton…

Hypothalamic Apelin/Reactive Oxygen Species Signaling Controls Hepatic Glucose Metabolism in the Onset of Diabetes

2014

Aims: We have previously demonstrated that central apelin is implicated in the control of peripheral glycemia, and its action depends on nutritional (fast versus fed) and physiological (normal versus diabetic) states. An intracerebroventricular (icv) injection of a high dose of apelin, similar to that observed in obese/diabetic mice, increase fasted glycemia, suggesting (i) that apelin contributes to the establishment of a diabetic state, and (ii) the existence of a hypothalamic to liver axis. Using pharmacological, genetic, and nutritional approaches, we aim at unraveling this system of regulation by identifying the hypothalamic molecular actors that trigger the apelin effect on liver gluc…

Correlation Dynamics During a Slow Interaction Quench in a One-Dimensional Bose Gas

2014

We investigate the response of a one-dimensional Bose gas to a slow increase of its interaction strength. We focus on the rich dynamics of equal-time single-particle correlations treating the Lieb-Liniger model within a bosonization approach and the Bose-Hubbard model using the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group method. For short distances, correlations follow a power-law with distance with an exponent given by the adiabatic approximation. In contrast, for long distances, correlations decay algebraically with an exponent understood within the sudden quench approximation. This long distance regime is separated from an intermediate distance one by a generalized Lieb-Robinson …

Polydimethylsiloxane (silicone rubber) brooch as a personal passive air sampler for semi-volatile organic compounds

2018

Exposure assessments conducted using a personal sampler include the contribution of human activities to exposure that is neglected when using a stationary air sampler. This study evaluated the uptake characteristics and application of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS or silicone rubber) brooch as a personal passive air sampler (PPAS) for measuring concentrations of two groups of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), namely phthalates and organophosphate esters (OPEs), indoors in proximity to the breathing zone. Uptake rates of the PDMS brooch were calibrated against a personal low volume active air sampler (PLV-AAS) co-deployed on each of five study participants working in offices for 8 hs…

The validity of the “liminf” formula and a characterization of Asplund spaces

2014

Abstract We show that for a given bornology β on a Banach space X the following “ lim inf ” formula lim inf x ′ ⟶ C x T β ( C ; x ′ ) ⊂ T c ( C ; x ) holds true for every closed set C ⊂ X and any x ∈ C , provided that the space X × X is ∂ β -trusted. Here T β ( C ; x ) and T c ( C ; x ) denote the β-tangent cone and the Clarke tangent cone to C at x. The trustworthiness includes spaces with an equivalent β-differentiable norm or more generally with a Lipschitz β-differentiable bump function. As a consequence, we show that for the Frechet bornology, this “ lim inf ” formula characterizes in fact the Asplund property of X. We use our results to obtain new characterizations of T β -pseudoconve…
