Design and fabrication of an ultra-flexible electrode system for invasive continuous monitoring during surgery

This paper introduces the development, design and characterization of a tube with electrodes for stimulation and recording. This tube can be used as an operative monitoring system for thyroid surgery. In such surgeries damaging of the neural tissue can result in permanently malfunction. Continuous nerve monitoring can reduce significantly this risk.

In order to assess the long-term (12 months) efficacy and safety of fenofibrate administered with simvastatin in the treatment of primary mixed hyperlipidaemia, we conducted a study that compared increasing dosages of these drugs in subgroups of men and women belonging to a clinical sample of outpatients. This was an open study carried out in patients with primary mixed hyperlipidaemia (lipoprotein phenotype IIb) who needed a combined therapeutic approach because of their poor response to a single-drug regimen with an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (simvastatin). Abstract Background The length of sphincter which can be divided during fistulotomy for perianal fistula is unclear. The aim was to quantify sphincter damage during fistulotomy and determine the relationship between such damage with symptoms and severity of faecal incontinence and long-term quality of life (QOL). Gartner's duct cysts associated with renal dysgenesis are rare malformations and represent a diagnostic challenge. We report on one such case in which final diagnosis was achieved by laparoscopy and discuss the possible role of minimally invasive surgery in the management of this condition.

Abstract: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are at increased risk of developing metabolic disease such as diabetes. The effects of positive airway pressure on glycemic control are contradictory. We therefore evaluated the change in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in a large cohort of OSA patients after long-term treatment with positive airway pressure. HbA1c levels were assessed in a subsample of the European Sleep Apnea Database [n=1608] at baseline and at long-term follow up with positive airway pressure therapy (mean 378.9 +/- 423.0 days). Background noise has become part of our everyday life in modern societies. Its presence affects both the ability to concentrate and communicate. Some individuals, like children, the elderly, and non-native speakers have pronounced problems in noisy environments.
