Professionalität und Postkonventionalität. Entwicklungstheoretische und soziologische Perspektiven auf professionalisiertes Handeln

2014

The purpose of the following article is to point out the essential role of postconventional moral judgement in professionalized action. By some examples I will demonstrate that it is the precondition of completed professionalization.

Practices of development assistance and climate change mitigation in reshaping the Mozambican REDD+ strategy

2020

ABSTRACTThis paper studies how the practices of climate change governance and development assistance have reshaped the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) process in Mozambique. We look at how the original goals of the Mozambican REDD+ strategy changed in the interplay of different governance-related practices, both those originating locally and nationally, and those coming from international organisations. The paper is based on the frameworks of multilevel governance and practice theory. We identify six combinations of practices that are relevant in the REDD+ programmes and projects. Three of them are incorporated in the general idea of sustainability, inclu…

Macro and Trace Elements in Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) Breeds in Latvia Depending on Variety, Environment, and Agricultural Practice

2018

Abstract The aim of the study was to determine concentrations of 13 macro and trace elements in different barley genotypes depending on the year of growth (2011, 2012, and 2013) and agricultural practice (conventional/organic). Cd, Pb, Cr, Ni, and Al concentrations were determined by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry and K, Na, Zn, Cu, Ca, Mg, Mn, and Fe concentrations by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Statistically different concentrations of Cr, Cu, and Zn occurred among genotypes; for Ca, Mn, and Fe concentrations between barley grains, grown conventionally and organically; for Cr and Ni concentrations between hulled and hull-less grain and for Cd, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Al, …

The Future Of Mutual Assistance Conventions In The European Union

2010

The European Union, keeping to the traditional principles of conventional international law, dealt with judicial assistance within the framework provided by the Third Pillar, at first rather timidly through its new normative instruments; and then more effectively through the traditional route of conventions. The two main aims of the EU Convention 2000 are, on the one hand, 'ensuring that mutual assistance between Member States is provided in a fast and efficient manner'; 29 and on the other, guaranteeing that this is done in a way that is: 'compatible with the basic principles of their national law and in compliance with the individual rights and principles of the European Convention for th…

Long-term no-tillage application increases soil organic carbon, nitrous oxide emissions and faba bean (Vicia faba L.) yields under rain-fed Mediterra…

2018

The introduction of legumes into crop sequences and the reduction of tillage intensity are both proposed as agronomic practices to mitigate the soil degradation and negative impact of agriculture on the environment. However, the joint effects of these practices on nitrous oxide (NO) and ammonia (NH) emissions from soil remain unclear, particularly concerning semiarid Mediterranean areas. In the frame of a long-term field experiment (23 years), a 2-year study was performed on the faba bean (Vicia faba L.) to evaluate the effects of the long-term use of no tillage (NT) compared to conventional tillage (CT) on yield and NO and NH emissions from a Vertisol in a semiarid Mediterranean environmen…

Defining Life as a Non-Essentialist Natural Kind

2019

Abstract: The increasing number of proposals to define the concept of life in biology has led some authors to consider this task useless and without sense. All sceptics base their argument on the idea that life is a natural kind with a strong metaphysical commitment. Considering this, the aim of this paper is to explore the concept of life as a non-essentialist natural kind. It is intended to highlight that complex scientific concepts are better understood from points of view that are not constrained by the rigid frameworks of essentialism and the realism/conventionalism dichotomy.  Keywords: natural kind, definition of life, essentialism, operational definitions.

Extracellular Membrane Vesicles as Vehicles for Brain Cell-to-Cell Interactions in Physiological as well as Pathological Conditions.

2015

Extracellular vesicles are involved in a great variety of physiological events occurring in the nervous system, such as cross talk among neurons and glial cells in synapse development and function, integrated neuronal plasticity, neuronal-glial metabolic exchanges, and synthesis and dynamic renewal of myelin. Many of these EV-mediated processes depend on the exchange of proteins, mRNAs, and noncoding RNAs, including miRNAs, which occurs among glial and neuronal cells. In addition, production and exchange of EVs can be modified under pathological conditions, such as brain cancer and neurodegeneration. Like other cancer cells, brain tumours can use EVs to secrete factors, which allow escaping…

Do conservative agriculture practices increase soil water repellency? A case study in citrus-cropped soils

2012

Water repellency is a property of soils that inhibits or delays infiltration. Long-term conservation practices as no-tillage, manure addition, application of herbicides may contribute to increase soil organic matter and, hence, soil water repellency. In this research, we have studied the effect of long-term addition of plant residues and organic manure, no-tillage and no chemical fertilization (MNT), annual addition of plant residues and no-tillage (NT), application of conventional herbicides and no-tillage (H), and conventional tillage (CT) on soil water repellency in Mediterranean calcareous citrus-cropped soils (Eastern Spain). Slight water repellency was observed in MNT soils, which may…

Is mathematics syntax of language?, II

1995

Around 1930 R. Carnap, H. Hahn and M. Schlick,1 largely under the influence of L. Wittgenstein, developed a conception of the nature of mathematics2 which can be characterized as being a combination of nominalism and conventionalism and which had been foreshadowed in Schlick’s doctrine about implicit definitions.3 Its main objective, according to Hahn and Schlick,4 was to conciliate strict empiricism5 with the a priori certainty of mathematics. According to this conception (which, in the sequel, I shall call the syntactical viewpoint) mathematics can completely be reduced to (or replaced by) syntax of language.6 I.e. the validity of mathematical propositions consists solely in their being c…

Article 9 – Non-Governmental Organisations and Civil Society

2023

Under Article 9 of the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (‘the Convention’), States Parties are required to ‘recognise, encourage and support’ the work of nongovernmental and civil society organisations active in combating violence against women, and to ‘establish effective co-operation’ with these organisations.Specific references to nongovernmental organisations (‘NGOs’) and civil society organisations (‘CSOs’) can also be found in Article 7, paragraph 3, calling for NGOs and CSOs to be included, by the Parties to the Convention, in the design and implementation of all policies addressing violence against women and domest…
