Epidemiology, Clinical Features and Prognostic Factors of Pediatric SARS-CoV-2 Infection: Results From an Italian Multicenter Study

2021

Background: Many aspects of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children and adolescents remain unclear and optimal treatment is debated. The objective of our study was to investigate epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic characteristics of pediatric SARS-CoV-2 infection, focusing on risk factors for complicated and critical disease. Methods: The present multicenter Italian study was promoted by the Italian Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, involving both pediatric hospitals and general pediatricians/family doctors. All subjects under 18 years of age with documented SARS-CoV-2 infection and referred to the coordinating center were enrolled from March 2020.Results: As of 15 September 2020, 75…

Severity of Covid-19 Clinical Outcomes and Mortality in Multiple Myeloma Patients over Year 1 of the Pandemic

2021

Abstract Introduction In the first weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic when healthcare systems in many areas were overstretched, we documented that hospital mortality in multiple myeloma (MM) patients infected by Sars-Cov-2 was 50% higher than in age matched Covid-19 patients without cancer. In the following months, the pressure on healthcare systems in Spain continued although it did not reach the extreme levels of the first weeks of the pandemic. In this study, we proposed to determine if the severity of Covid-19 outcomes in MM patients has changed over the first year of the pandemic. Patients and methods The Spanish MM Collaborative Group (Pethema-GEM) conducted a survey at national level on …

Coagulation Parameters: An Efficient Measure for Predicting the Prognosis and Clinical Management of Patients with COVID-19

2020

Background. COVID-19 is an ongoing global pandemic. Since the detection of the first cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Wuhan, China, the current pandemic has affected more than 25.3 million people worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between coagulation abnormalities and prognosis in a cohort of patients with COVID-19. Methods. We performed a retrospective cohort study of 3581 patients admitted to Hospital La Paz (Madrid, Spain) due to respiratory infection by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus from the beginning of the current pandemic to 15 July 2020. Results. Of the 3581 study patients, 48.94% were men, and 19.80% were healthcare work…

Pediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome (PIMS) Did Occur in Poland during Months with Low COVID-19 Prevalence, Preliminary Results of a Nationwid…

2020

Pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome (PIMS) is a new entity in children, likely associated with previous coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) infection. Most of the reports about PIMS come from countries particularly hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our aim was to investigate the nature of inflammatory syndromes in Poland (country with low COVID-19 prevalence) and to perceive the emergence of PIMS in our country. On 25 May 2020, we launched a nationwide survey of inflammatory syndromes in children for retrospective (since 4 March 2020) and prospective data collection. Up to 28 July, 39 reported children met the inclusion criteria. We stratified them according to age (&lt

Age- and Sex-Graded Data Evaluation of Vaccination Reactions after Initial Injection of the BNT162b2 mRNA Vaccine in a Local Vaccination Center in Ge…

2021

A high vaccination rate of older and particularly chronically ill people against coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is likely one of the most important factors in containing the pandemic. When Germany’s vaccination campaign started on December 2020, vaccination prioritization was initially carried out starting with older population groups. Side effect rates in 1065 individuals who had received the first dose of the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccine BNT162b2 Tozinameran from BioNTech/Pfizer three weeks earlier were examined retrospectively. An age- and gender-graded data analysis showed clear age and gender differences with regard to vaccine-related adverse effects. In 77% of all in…

mRNA COVID-19 vaccines do not increase the short-term risk of clinical relapses in multiple sclerosis

2021

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, immune-mediated disorder of the central nervous system. A novel coronavirus, namely SARS-CoV-2, has been recently responsible for the highly infectious disease referred as COVID-19, rapidly spreading all over the world. Many vaccines have been developed to control COVID-19 pandemic, including the mRNA vaccines Pfizer/BioNTech (BNT162b2) and Moderna (mRNA1273).1 The vaccination of people with MS (pwMS) has been recommended by several national and international MS societies. However, effectiveness and safety of anti-COVID-19 mRNA vaccines in MS need to be confirmed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the short-term risk of clinical relapses in pwMS in …

Behavioral and psychological effects of coronavirus disease-19 quarantine in patients with dementia

2020

Background: In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic due to the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and several governments planned a national quarantine in order to control the virus spread. Acute psychological effects of quarantine in frail elderly subjects with special needs, such as patients with dementia, have been poorly investigated. The aim of this study was to assess modifications of neuropsychiatric symptoms during quarantine in patients with dementia and their caregivers. Methods: This is a sub-study of a multicenter nation-wide survey. A structured telephone interview was delivered to family caregivers of patients with diagnosis of Alzheimer disease (AD),…

A new exciting hypothesis: direct correlation between periodontitis and clinical evolution of COVID-19 patients.

2020

The aim of the present opinion article is to hypothesize a possible correlation between clinical evolution of COVID-19 and a chronic inflammatory disease such as periodontitis. Reviews have been performed about the correlations between COVID-19 and IL-6, COVID-19 and diabetes, diabetes and periodontitis. Several studies discussed the role played by IL-6 in the pathogenetic mechanisms of COVID-19. A recent study found that COVID-19 adult patients with diabetes, without other comorbidities, were at greater risk of numerous diseases COVID related, such as severe pneumonia and excessive uncontrolled inflammatory responses. Besides, serum levels of inflammation-related biomarkers, such as IL-6, …

Le pharmacien et le consentement éclairé

2021

During the implementation of the Covid-19 vaccination, the issue of consent was widely commented upon. Many confusions arose between the withdrawal period, the obligation to collect written consent and many other more or less fanciful concepts. Informed consent is one of the founding stones of health democracy. It deserves to be understood in order to be intelligently applied.
