Imaging of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors: From Diagnosis to Evaluation of Therapeutic Response
2016
Once considered an obscure tumor entity with poor prognosis, gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are nowadays recognized as the most common mesenchymal tumors of the alimentary tract. GISTs differ from other mesenchymal neoplasms at pathology since 90% of them exhibit strong immunohistochemical staining for KIT, a tyrosinase kinase growth factor receptor. In the early 2000s, the ability of imatinib mesylate, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, to inhibit KIT established a new paradigm for cancer treatment. A reduction in lesion size may not be observed or may appear many months after therapy; thus, tumor response criteria alternative to the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors were dev…
Model selection for penalized Gaussian Graphical Models
2013
High-dimensional data refers to the case in which the number of parameters is of one or more order greater than the sample size. Penalized Gaussian graphical models can be used to estimate the conditional independence graph in high-dimensional setting. In this setting, the crucial issue is to select the tuning parameter which regulates the sparsity of the graph. In this paper, we focus on estimating the "best" tuning parameter. We propose to select this tuning parameter by minimizing an information criterion based on the generalized information criterion and to use a stability selection approach in order to obtain a more stable graph. The performance of our method is compared with the state…
Polyomino coloring and complex numbers
2008
AbstractUsually polyominoes are represented as subsets of the lattice Z2. In this paper we study a representation of polyominoes by Gaussian integers. Polyomino {(x1,y1),(x2,y2),…,(xs,ys)}⊂Z2 is represented by the set {(x1+iy1),(x2+iy2),…,(xs+iys)}⊂Z[i]. Then we consider functions of type f:P→G from the set P of all polyominoes to an abelian group G, given by f(x,y)≡(x+iy)m(modv), where v is prime in Z[i],1≤m<N(v) (N(v) is the norm of v). Using the arithmetic of the ring Z[i] we find necessary and sufficient conditions for such a function to be a coloring map.
Interactivized : Visual Interaction for Better Decisions with Interactive Multiobjective Optimization
2022
In today’s data-driven world, decision makers are facing many conflicting objectives. Since there is usually no solution that optimizes all objectives simultaneously, the aim is to identify a solution with acceptable trade-offs. Interactive multiobjective optimization methods are iterative processes in which a human decision maker repeatedly provides one’s preferences to request computing new solutions and compares them. With these methods, the decision maker can learn about the problem and its limitations. However, advanced optimization software usually offer simple visualization tools that can be significantly improved. On the other hand, current approaches for multiobjective optimization…
Stability analysis of Beck's column over a fractional-order hereditary foundation
2018
This paper considers the case of Beck's column resting on a hereditary bed of independent springpots. The springpot possesses an intermediate rheological behaviour among linear spring and linear dashpot. It is defined by means of couple ( C β , β ) that characterize the material of the element and is ruled by a Caputo's fractional derivative. In this paper, we investigate the critical load of the column under the action of a follower load by means of a novel complex transform that allows to use the Routh–Hurwitz theorem in the complex half-plane for the stability analysis.
Habitat preferences of edible dormouse, Glis glis italicus: implications for the management of arboreal mammals in Mediterranean forests
2015
Research on arboreal mammals living in Mediterranean forests is poor. Molecular research assessed the existence of an evolutionary significant unit in the edible dormouse populations living in south Italy, Sicily and Sardinia, and we decided to investigate the environmental factors capable of explaining its occurrence and abundance in Sicily, for a better management of these populations. We assessed the species habitat preferences by setting 25 large and 25 small nestboxes in five sample areas along an altitudinal gradient of the Madonie Range, and recorded habitat variables, food availability, and demographic data for two years. To obtain synthetic descriptors of the dormice habitat requir…
Injury Evaluation in Teenage Cyclist-Vehicle Crash by Multibody Simulation
2014
Information on impact locations, impact situations and cyclist and pedestrian dynamics in impacts with passenger cars is fundamental for the development of effective solutions to improve cyclist and pedestrian protection. Accidentology research shows that cyclists typically have a higher impact location than the pedestrian, with a larger share of injuries from the windscreen area. Majority of accidents in Palermo, in the last years, happens at urban street (84%) that involve teenager (6.4%). In this paper simulation study captures dynamics and injuries to head and chest for teenager between a generic bicycle and a car model that is suitable for pedestrian or cyclist safety. Multibody simula…

2010
EULAR/PRINTO/PRES Objectives To validate the previously proposed classification criteria for Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP), childhood polyarteritis nodosa (c-PAN), c-Wegener granulomatosis (c-WG) and c-Takayasu arteritis (c-TA).Methods Step 1: retrospective/prospective webdata collection for children with HSP, c-PAN, c-WG and c-TA with age at diagnosis <= 18 years. Step 2: blinded classification by consensus panel of a representative sample of 280 cases. Step 3: statistical (sensitivity, specificity, area under the curve and.-agreement) and nominal group technique consensus evaluations. Results 827 patients with HSP, 150 with c-PAN, 60 with c-WG, 87 with c-TA and 52 with c-other were compar…
Gully erosion susceptibility mapping using GIS-based multi-criteria decision analysis techniques
2019
Abstract This research introduces a scientific methodology for gully erosion susceptibility mapping (GESM) that employs geography information system (GIS)-based multi-criteria decision analysis. The model was tested in Semnan Province, Iran, which has an arid and semi-arid climate with high susceptibility to gully erosion. The technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) models were integrated. The important aspect of this research is that it did not require gully erosion inventory maps for GESM. Therefore, the proposed methodology could be useful in areas with missing or incomplete …
