E-beam irradiation and UV photocrosslinking of microemulsion-laden poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) hydrogels for ‘‘in situ’’ encapsulation of volatile hy…

2011

Gelled microemulsions are the subject of considerable scientific and commercial interest. Many efforts are currently devoted to improving their toxicological profile and functioning as biocompatible diffusion barrier for the controlled delivery of hydrophobic compounds. In the present investigation, a non-ionic polymeric surfactant was chosen to generate an oil-in-water microemulsion of a model fragrance in the presence of poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP). The microemulsion was then subjected to either electron-beam or UV-irradiation to induce free-radical crosslinking of PVP at low temperature and in the absence of crosslinking agents, catalysts and initiators. Irradiation conditions with…

New amphiphilic poly(butadiene)-graft-poly(ethylene oxide)s

1995

Amphiphilic graft copolymers with a poly(butadiene) backbone and poly(ethylene oxide) side chains were synthesized by grafting isocyanateterminated poly(ethylene oxide) on to partially hydroxylated poly(butadiene). The graft copolymers are water soluble if the fraction of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) exceeds 50 wt%. Solutions of graft copolymers in water and tetrahydrofuran were studied by static light scattering and viscosity measurements. By dynamic light scattering in solution it was shown that the graft copolymers form clusters.

Inherently fluorescent polyaniline nanoparticles in a dynamic landscape

2012

Abstract In this paper we report for the first time on the emissive behavior of two polyaniline (PANI) nanoparticle systems produced via oxidative chemical polymerization in the presence of either poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) or chitosan as polymeric stabilizers in water. The emission from PANI nanoparticles is irreversibly quenched by an increase of pH of the suspending medium from acid to neutral (chitosan–PANI) or alkaline (PVA–PANI). Conversely, PANI nanorods synthesized in the same conditions of the above, but in presence of poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone), is not emissive at any pH. The role of the polymeric surfactant as a soft template is key in controlling the morphology and the properties …

Growth kinetics of colloidal Ge nanocrystals for light harvesters

2016

Colloidal Ge nanocrystals (NCs) are gaining increased interest because of their potential application in low-cost optoelectronic and light harvesting devices. However, reliable control of colloidal NC synthesis is often an issue and a deeper understanding of the key-role parameters governing NC growth is highly required. Here we report an extended investigation on the growth of colloidal Ge NCs synthesized from a one-pot solution based approach. A systematic study of the effects of synthesis time, temperature and precursor concentration is elucidated in detail. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals the presence of crystalline Ge NCs with a mean size (from 5 to 35 nm) decreasing with the …

Particle characterization using multiple scattering decorrelation methods: hard-sphere model system

2000

Applying static light scattering experiments, we characterize colloidal particles that are used as model hard-sphere systems in experiments investigating their crystallization kinetics. The particles comprise of a compact core of poly(methyl methacrylate) and short polymer hairs grafted onto the surface. We use a contrast variation procedure to determine the refractive index variation within the particles and observe that one component of the binary mixture used as a solvent penetrates the particles and masks completely the small polymer hairs. Making use of the determined refractive index variation, we obtain the average particle radius and its polydispersity from measurements of the parti…

Multifunctional clickable and protein-repellent magnetic silica nanoparticles

2016

Silica nanoparticles are versatile materials whose physicochemical surface properties can be precisely adjusted. Because it is possible to combine several functionalities in a single carrier, silica-based materials are excellent candidates for biomedical applications. However, the functionality of the nanoparticles can get lost upon exposure to biological media due to uncontrolled biomolecule adsorption. Therefore, it is important to develop strategies that reduce non-specific protein-particle interactions without losing the introduced surface functionality. Herein, organosilane chemistry is employed to produce magnetic silica nanoparticles bearing differing amounts of amino and alkene func…

Cobalt hexacyanoferrate–poly(methyl methacrylate) composite: Synthesis and characterization

2010

Abstract The preparation of cobalt hexacyanoferrate nanoparticles–poly(methyl methacrylate) (CoHCF–PMMA) composites are described together with their characterization and thermochromic properties. CoHCF nanoparticles – investigated by dynamic light scattering – were prepared by optimizing solvent composition and temperature to obtain nanoparticles with a reduced degree of aggregation. The nanoparticles were embedded in a PMMA matrix to obtain a transparent coloured composite which was studied by transmission electron microscopy. The nanoparticle chromic features, enhanced by their reduced sizes, were investigated by UV–vis and FT-IR spectroscopy.

An Advanced Sensor for Particles in Gases Using Dynamic Light Scattering in Air as Solvent

2021

Dynamic Light Scattering is a technique currently used to assess the particle size and size distribution by processing the scattered light intensity. Typically, the particles to be investigated are suspended in a liquid solvent. An analysis of the particular conditions required to perform a light scattering experiment on particles in air is presented in detail, together with a simple experimental setup and the data processing procedure. The results reveal that such an experiment is possible and using the setup and the procedure, both simplified to extreme, enables the design of an advanced sensor for particles and fumes that can output the average size of the particles in air.

Dynamic light scattering by rodlike particles: [4] examination of the vanadium(V)-oxide system

1999

The dynamics of a suspension of rodlike particles has been investigated using dynamic light scattering. The sols investigated in this contribution are not monodisperse by nature and age with time. An evaluation of the first cumulant of the autocorrelation functions as a function of scattering vector is expected to yield the dimensions of the particles. While the data can be excellently fitted by the theoretical expressions for freshly prepared sols, we found that the theoretically expected interrelation of the (three) diffusion coefficients is not reproduced, which prohibits the unequivocal determination of the particle dimensions. Aged sols, on the other hand, cannot be described at all wi…
