Anti-inflammatory activity in selected Antarctic benthic organisms
2014
Antarctic benthos was prospected in search for anti-inflammatory activity in polar benthic invertebrates, in two different geographical areas: deep-bottoms of the Eastern Weddell Sea and shallow-waters of the South Shetland Islands. A total of 36 benthic algae and invertebrate species were selected to perform solubility tests in order to obtain extracts that were soluble at an innocuous ethanol concentration (0.2%) for cell culture, and further test them for anti-inflammatory activity. From these, ethanol extracts of ten species from five different phyla resulted suitable to be studied in cell macrophage cultures (RAW 264.7). Cytotoxicity (MTT method) and production of inflammatory mediator…
The Roadmap to Finnish Open Science and Research
2015
Finland published its open science roadmap at the end of November 2014. This roadmap is based on the work of the Open Science and Research Initiative (ATT), a cross-administrative initiative established by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The goal of this initiative is to promote open science and availability of information. Exploration of recent developments of open access in the EU shows that Finland is not among the leading countries in the EU. This paper focuses on the practical action plan of this roadmap and describes how the weakest part of Finnish open science, green open access is to be lifted at international top level. peerReviewed

Epistemic network analyses of economics students' graph understanding. An eye-tracking study
2020
Learning to solve graph tasks is one of the key prerequisites of acquiring domain-specific knowledge in most study domains. Analyses of graph understanding often use eye-tracking and focus on analyzing how much time students spend gazing at particular areas of a graph&mdash
Synthesis, structural and spectroscopic characterization of the α,ω-diammonioalkane hexabromorhodates( III) [H3N(CH2)xNH3]2[H5O2][RhBr6]Br2 (x = 3, 4…
2002
The reaction of rhodium(III) chloride trihydrate with 1,3-diaminopropane and 1,4-diaminobutane in concentrated hydrobromic acid results in the formation of the bis(α,ω-diammonioalkane) diaquahydrogen(1+) hexabromorhodate(III) dibromides [H3N(CH2)xNH3]2[H5O2][RhBr6]Br2 (x = 3, 4). Dark red single crystals were obtained by diffusion-controlled crystallization at room temperature. Both compounds crystallize in space group type P1̄ and their structures are closely related. In view of crystal engineering they are inorganic-organic hybrid materials built up from octahedral [RhBr6]3−, simple Br− and flexible chain-like [H3N(CH2)xNH3]2+ ions with the [H5O2]+ and further Br− ions incorporated and th…

Plasma selenium levels and oxidative stress biomarkers: a gene-environment interaction population-based study.
2014
The role of selenium exposure in preventing chronic disease is controversial, especially in selenium-repleted populations. At high concentrations, selenium exposure may increase oxidative stress. Studies evaluating the interaction of genetic variation in genes involved in oxidative stress pathways and selenium are scarce. We evaluated the cross-sectional association of plasma selenium concentrations with oxidative stress levels, measured as oxidized to reduced glutathione ratio (GSSG/GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine (8-oxo-dG) in urine, and the interacting role of genetic variation in oxidative stress candidate genes, in a representative sample of 1445 men and women…
