Theory of Mind (ToM) and language: stimulating metalinguistic skills in people with dementia

2016

ABSTRACT Purpose The purpose of this paper was to assess the use of the Metalinguistic Skills Stimulation Program in Theory of Mind (ToM) in people with dementia. Methods An experimental research design was developed. Forty-two subjects, 28 women and 14 men, aged 61 to 87 participated in the study. The three following groups were created: Experimental Group and Control Group - both composed of people with dementia, and Normal Group - consisting of people without dementia or any medical and psychological disorders that keep them from living a normal life. All subjects in the sample were evaluated using the MMSE30 Test and the MetAphAs Test. The stimulation program was used with the Experimen…

When the amnestic mild cognitive impairment disappears: characterisation of the memory profile

2009

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Subjects affected by mild cognitive impairment (MCI) may improve during the observation period. This is the first study investigating qualitative features of memory deficits in subjects affected by reversible MCI [reversible cognitive impairment (RCI)]. METHODS: Baseline cognitive and memory performances of 18 subjects affected by amnestic MCI who had normalized cognitive performances at follow-ups were compared with those of 76 amnestic MCI subjects who still showed impaired cognitive performances at the 24-month follow-up (MCI) and with those of a group of 87 matched control subjects (normal controls). RESULTS: Compared with normal controls the memory deficit in the…

Education in Sub-Saharan Africa: a comparative analysis

2012

As in most countries worldwide, Sub-Saharan African countries are striving to build their human capital so they can compete for jobs and investments in an increasingly globalized world. In this region, which includes the largest number of countries that have not yet attained universal primary schooling, the ambitions and aspirations of Sub-Saharan African countries and their youth far exceed this basic goal. Over the past 20 years, educational levels have risen sharply across Sub-Saharan Africa. Already hard at work to provide places in primary schools for all children, most countries of the region are also rapidly expanding access to secondary and tertiary levels of education. Alongside th…

Pre-Messinian ecological diversity of Mediterranean sharks revealed by the study of their dermal denticles

2020

The Messinian salinity crisis (~5.59 Ma) is regarded as one of the most determining events for the recent evolutionary and palaeobiogeographic history of the Mediterranean biota. The impact of such episode has usually been assessed by evaluating the associated taxonomic turnover, however its consequences have rarely been interpreted from an ecological perspective. Here we assess the functional diversity of shark dermal denticles in a Serravallian locality from southeast Spain, providing a primary view into the pre-Messinian ecological diversity of shark communities from the Western Mediterranean. Our results reveal a high diversity of functional types of dermal denticles including dermal de…

Influence of disulfiram on oxidative drug demethylation.

1970

In clinical antiepileptie therapy it has been observed that the simultaneous administration of diphenylhydantoin and various other drugs causes toxic reactions to diphenylhydantoin. I t was found that disulfiram (Olesen, 1966) as well as ehloramphenieol (Christensen and Skovsted, 1969) cause toxic effects in patients treated with diphenylhydantoin. They are attributed to an increased concentration of diphenylhydantoin in the plasma. Analogous observations show that chloramphenieol enhances the clinical effects of tolbutamide and dicoumarol (Christensen and Skovsted, 1969). Since diphenylhydantoin is metabolized chiefly by p-hydroxylation to 5-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-5-phenyl-hydantoin (Butler, 19…

Combination of aztreonam, ceftazidime–avibactam and amikacin in the treatment of VIM-1 Pseudomonas aeruginosa ST235 osteomyelitis

2021

Abstract We describe a challenging case of patient with metallo-beta-lactamase-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa sternal osteomyelitis following aortic valve replacement with biological prosthesis. The strain exhibited a multidrug-resistance phenotype carrying the blaVIM-1 gene and belonged to the high-risk clone sequence type ST235. The patient was successfully treated with surgical debridement plus antibiotic therapy with ceftazidime/avibactam, aztreonam, and amikacin. Time-kill curves showed that this triple antibiotic combination at 1 × MIC was strongly synergic after 8 h, achieving 99.9% killing and maintaining this until 48 h.

Blood-Brain-Barrier Models for the Investigation of Transporter- and Receptor-Mediated Amyloid-β Clearance in Alzheimers Disease

2010

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia in the elderly with more than 26 million people worldwide living with the disease. Besides the main neuropathological hallmarks of AD, provoked by the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau hyperphosphorylation, other cells and cellular systems such as microglia and the neurovascular unit establishing the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) have been implicated to play a role in AD etiopathology. Insulating the brain from the blood stream, the BBB facilitates supply and disposal of nutrients and metabolites by the expression of transporters and transcytotic receptors at the polarized endothelial cell (EC) surface. Recently, several proteins…

Being in the Past and Perform the Future in a Virtual World: VR Applications to Assess and Enhance Episodic and Prospective Memory in Normal and Path…

2020

The process of aging commonly features a gradual deterioration in cognitive performance and, in particular, the decline of memory. Despite the increased longevity of the world's population, the prevalence of neurodegenerative conditions, such as dementia, continues to be a major burden on public health, and consequently, the latest research has been focused on memory and aging. Currently, the failure of episodic and Prospective memory (PM) is one of the main complaints in the elderly, considered among the early symptoms of dementia. It is therefore increasingly important to define more clearly the boundaries between normal and pathological aging. Recently, researchers have begun to build an…
