Exhaled breath analysis for early disease detection may provide a convenient method for painless and non-invasive diagnosis. In this work, a novel, compact and easy-to-use breath analyzer platform with a modular sensing chamber and direct breath sampling unit is presented. The developed analyzer system comprises a compact, low volume, temperature-controlled sensing chamber in three modules that can host any type of resistive gas sensor arrays. Background. Lynch syndrome is the most common genetic predisposition for hereditary cancer. Carriers of pathogenic changes in mismatch repair (MMR) genes have an increased risk of developing colorectal (CRC), endometrial, ovarian, urinary tract, prostate, and other cancers, depending on which gene is malfunctioning. In Lynch syndrome, differences in cancer incidence (penetrance) according to the gene involved have led to the stratification of cancer surveillance. Digestion-free determination of trace-metals (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu) in beverages by inverse voltammetry in a flow-through cell equipped with a mercury film-electrode is described. Optimal enrichment potentials are obtained by inspection of the pseudopolarograms of the elements in the original diluted sample solution. After the deposition step in the untreated sample solution stripping is effected in a proper supporting electrolyte after medium exchange. Values obtained by this techniques with various samples compare well with those obtained by usual procedures including wet digestion of the samples.

Characterization of the DNA-binding activity of the E1 and E2 proteins and the E1/E2 complex of human papillomavirus type 33.

The E1 and E2 proteins of papillomaviruses are essential for the initiation of viral DNA replication. We have purified the E2 protein of human papillomavirus type 33 (HPV-33) by immunoaffinity chromatography. The purified E2 protein bound with high affinity to all four consensus binding sites of HPV-33 (Kd approximately equal to 2 x 10(-10)M). A putative E2 binding site differing at one position in the second stem of the palindrome was not bound by E2. The E1 protein of HPV-33 purified by affinity chromatography using glutathione S-transferase as tag displayed specific DNA-binding activity in footprint analyses protecting HPV-33 nucleotides 7896 to 7909/1 to 18 from DNasel digestion. The efficiency of enzyme replacement therapy in pancreatic insufficiency is usually judged on the grounds of clinical improvement and the effect on steatorrhea: treatment is thought to be successful if steatorrhea is abolished or, at least, reduced. In the majority of patients, the amount of enzyme necessary to alleviate steatorrhea can be reduced if lipase is protected against acidic inactivation either by blocking H2 secretion of the stomach or by protecting enzymes by pH-sensitive enteric coating. However, steatorrhea is frequently not abolished and a differential treatment may be necessary in each patient.

The amino acid profile of 11 samples of tiger nuts ( Cyperus esculentusL.) grown in the area of “L'Horta Nord” in Valencia (Spain) and one sample of African origin were determined, along with the amino acid contents of 10 samples of natural orgeat from Valencia. Protein was hydrolysed by hydrochloric acid at 110 °C for 23 h, and amino acids were derivatised with AQC and determined by RP-HPLC with fluorescence detection. The chromatographic conditions were optimised. One possible workaround consists in reducing the system to the colloids only, whose interactions are described through an effective pair potential, wf.
