The Logic of Gift: Inspiring behavior in organizations beyond the limits of duty and exchange
2016
[EN] Giving without the expectation of reward is difficult to understand in organizational contexts. In opposition to a logic based on self-interest or a sense of duty, a "logic of gift" has been proposed as a way to understand the phenomenon of free, unconditional giving. However, the rationale behind, and effects of, this logic have been under-explored. This paper responds by first clarifying the three logics of action¿the logic of exchange, the logic of duty, and the logic of gift¿and then explains how their balanced integration promises to enhance organizational life and outcomes. Having explicated the unique character and contributions of the logic of gift, the paper further suggests p…
Standard vs random dictator games: On the effects of role uncertainty and framing on generosity
2021
This project was conducted while Ernesto Mesa-Vázquez was visiting Universidad Loyola Andalucia. He wants to particularly thank Pablo Brañas-Garza and Diego Jorrat for continued guidance and assessment with the experimental design. Álvaro Núñez-Bermúdez and the faculty members of the Economics and Business Sciences department at the University of Seville were very helpful in providing assistance for running the experiment. The paper has benefited from comments and suggestions provided by Maria Paz Espinosa, Giuseppe Attanassi, José Enrique Vila, Iván Arribas, Marco Faillo, Cristina Borra and participants at the Loyola Behavioral Lab and the Early Career Researchers in Experimental Economics…

Is Spain a lumpy country? A dynamic analysis of the ‘lens condition’
2008
We implement the ‘lens condition’ of Deardoff (1994) to investigate whether lumpiness, an excessively uneven geographic distribution of production factors, is large enough to allow for regional specialization of production at different factor prices. Using data from 50 Spanish provinces over the period 1964 to 2001, we show that Spain evolved from being a lumpy economy to a state where lumpiness no longer mattered.
Centres and peripheries in Finland: Granger causality tests using panel data
2009
Abstract Despite their importance from a policy point of view, empirical studies on the effects of growth centres in their regions are rare. This paper analyses mutual relationships between growth processes in centres and their surrounding hinterlands in 19 Finnish regions. Annual population data from the period 1970–2004 are used. A novel testing procedure based on an extension of the Granger causality definition in a panel data context is applied. Heterogeneity between regions is allowed. Both the homogeneous non-causality hypothesis and the homogeneous causality hypothesis are rejected. Causal processes prove to be heterogeneous. Causality from centres to peripheries is found for nine re…
Spatial econometrics and the hedonic pricing model: what about the temporal dimension
2014
Recent ready access to free software and toolbox applications is directly impacting spatial econometric modelling when working with geolocated data. Spatial econometric models are valuable tools for taking into account the possible latent structure of the price determination process and ensuring that the coefficients estimated are unbiased and efficient. However, mechanical applications can potentially bias estimated coefficients if spatial data is pooled over time because the applications consider the spatial dimension alone. Spatial models neglect the fact that data (e.g. real estate) may consist of a collection of spatial data pooled over time, and that time relations generate a unidirec…
The influence of geography on the spatial agglomeration of production in the European Union
2012
Abstract We investigate the relative impact of geographic features on the location of production in the European Union. Specifically, we attempt to quantify how much of the spatial pattern of GDP can be attributed to exogenous first-nature elements alone and how much can be derived from endogenous second-nature factors. In order to disentangle both effects empirically, we control for second-nature factors. A method based on the decomposition of the per capita GDP variance is applied to a panel of 1,171 European NUTS 3 regions for 2006. We demonstrate that variable and model misspecifications may bias results unless proper allowance is made for spatial autocorrelation and spatial heterogenei…
7. Mobility comparisons: Does using different measures matter?
2004
In this paper we review alternative measure of intergenerational mobility, emphasizing the distinction between absolute, relative and ordinal mobility. We then compare the performance of various mobility indices using real data. FromTreiman and Ganzeboom (1990) dataset we compare the degree of occupational and educational intergenerational (father-son) mobility in 16 countries in a single year (comprised between 1968 and 1982). From three Bank of Italy surveys (1993, 1995, 1998) we obtain a comparable measure of social prestige and we show that intergenerational mobility in Italy across regions or age cohort exhibits different trends according to different indicators. We suggest that ordina…
A Model for Assessing the Performance of Bureaucracy in Spain
2000
The aim of this paper is to put forward a simplified model which may help to explain the workings and performance of public entities in Spain. Starting from a bilateral monopoly characterization, we shall take into account the working rules, the decision-making mechanisms and the system of rewards and penalties in Spanish public administrations. This implies introducing different assumptions about the demand and the costs conditions what will lead us obtain meaningful distinct results from those reached in the standard models of bureaucratic behavior.
