Controlling the mode of operation of organic transistors through side chain engineering

2016

Electrolyte-gated organic transistors offer low bias operation facilitated by direct contact of the transistor channel with an electrolyte. Their operation mode is generally defined by the dimensionality of charge transport, where a field-effect transistor allows for electrostatic charge accumulation at the electrolyte/semiconductor interface, whereas an organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) facilitates penetration of ions into the bulk of the channel, considered a slow process, leading to volumetric doping and electronic transport. Conducting polymer OECTs allow for fast switching and high currents through incorporation of excess, hygroscopic ionic phases, but operate in depletion mode…

Current-Driven Organic Electrochemical Transistors for Monitoring Cell Layer Integrity with Enhanced Sensitivity

2021

In this progress report an overview is given on the use of the organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) as a biosensor for impedance sensing of cell layers. The transient OECT current can be used to detect changes in the impedance of the cell layer, as shown by Jimison et al. To circumvent the application of a high gate bias and preventing electrolysis of the electrolyte, in case of small impedance variations, an alternative measuring technique based on an OECT in a current-driven configuration is developed. The ion-sensitivity is larger than 1200 mV V-1 dec-1 at low operating voltage. It can be even further enhanced using an OECT based complementary amplifier, which consists of a p-type a…

Monitoring of Cell Layer Integrity with a Current-Driven Organic Electrochemical Transistor

2019

Abstract The integrity of CaCo-2 cell barriers is investigated by organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) in a current-driven configuration. Ion transport through cellular barriers via the paracellular pathway is modulated by tight junctions between adjacent cells. Rupturing its integrity by H2O2 is monitored by the change of the output voltage in the transfer characteristics. It is demonstrated that by operating the OECT in a current-driven configuration, the sensitive and temporal resolution for monitoring the cell barrier integrity is strongly enhanced as compared to the OECT transient response measurement. As a result, current-driven OECTs are useful tools to assess dynamic and crit…

Scanning electrochemical microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy-based characterization of perforated polycarbonate membrane modified b…

2021

Abstract In this research, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were applied for the evaluation of surface characteristics of electrochemical (amperometric) biosensor based on two composite structures consisting of perforated polycarbonate membrane modified by carbon-nanomaterials and glucose oxidase. The first structure consisted of the polycarbonate filter membrane, punctured by 400 nm holes (PCM) consequently modified with single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and graphene oxide (GO) layer (PCM/SWCNT/GO); and the other structure consisted of the same PCM, consequently modified with SWCNT and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) layer (PCM/S…

Dynamic doping in bright and stable light emitting electrochemical cells.

2013

By using fast current density and luminance versus voltage (JL-V) analysis the device operation of sandwiched light emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) during their normal voltage driving operation mode is studied. In LECs the application of a voltage results in the movement of ions changing the state of the device, as a result the JL-V scans need to be performed fast and meet certain conditions to be meaningful. Space-charge limited current behavior is observed once the injection barriers are overcome. The increase of the current density after this point imply that the effective thickness of the devices is reduced which indicates the formation of more conductive regions adjacent to the e…

Spatiotemporal colorimetry to reveal electrochemical kinetics of poly(o-toluidine) films along ITO surface

2018

Abstract Sheet resistance of transparent conducting electrodes can affect dramatically the electrochromic response of surface confined active species in any electrochromic device. The generated gradient of effective potential on the electrode surface has a direct impact on the electrochemical kinetics of these species. In this work, the electrochromic poly (o-toluidine) (POT) film, a derivative polyaniline, was deposited along a narrow, long transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) supporting electrode with a sheet resistivity of 30 Ω cm−1. This configuration was used as a model to simulate a surface electrical conduction from the external metallic contact to the opposite extreme of ITO with an i…

Correlating the Lifetime and Fluorine Content of Iridium(III) Emitters in Green Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells

2013

In light-emitting electrochemical cells, the lifetime of the device is intrinsically linked to the stability of the phosphorescent emitter. In this study, we present a series of ionic iridium(III) emitters based on cyclometalating phenylpyridine ligands whose fluorine substituents are varied in terms of position and number. Importantly, despite these structural modifications, the emitters exhibit virtually identical electrochemical and spectroscopic properties, which allows for proper comparison in functional devices. Quantum chemical calculations support the properties measured in solution and suggest great similarities regarding the electronic structures of the emitters. In electrolumines…

Two cationic Ir(III) complexes bearing 2-phenylpyridinato cyclometalating ligands and bithiazole-type ancillary ligands have been synthesized and optoelectronically characterised. These emitters exhibit unusually deep red-to-near-infrared emission at room temperature, thereby rendering them as attractive emitters in solution-processed light emitting electrochemical cell (LEEC) electroluminescent devices.

Improving the Turn-On Time of Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells without Sacrificing their Stability

2010

The luminance, efficiency, and turn-on time of ionic iridium complex-based light-emitting electrochemical cells can be improved by inserting an ionic liquid with high intrinsic conductivity. This results in a device in which the decrease in turn-on time is achieved while maintaining the stability.

Controlling the dynamic behavior of light emitting electrochemical cells

2013

Abstract Light emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) present an attractive route towards cost efficient lighting applications. By utilizing ionic phosphorescent transition metal complexes, efficient electroluminescence can be realized from a single layer device using air stable electrodes. These devices achieve efficient charge carrier injection due to ion accumulation at the interface upon driving, resulting in a dynamic response upon device operation. Here we investigate the device operation by using fast current and luminance versus voltage sweeps during normal fixed bias operating. A universal set of JL–V curves can be identified in which different regimes are observable. The speed and …
