Understanding the role of cross-language transfer of phonological awareness in emergent Hindi–English biliteracy acquisition

AbstractThis study examined within and cross-language relations, and specifically, the role of phonological awareness (PA) skills in reading among young Hindi-speaking children (L1) who were learning to read English (L2) in Delhi, India. Data was collected from 143 children in Grades 1 and 2 using measures validated for this population. The analyses examined the associations between L1 and L2 PA and decoding, both within and across the two languages. The results showed that PA skills within each language significantly predicted decoding in that language. 1990-luvun alussa Suomen lainsäädäntö mahdollisti opetuksen vieraalla kielellä (CLIL – Content and Language Integrated Learning). Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan englanninkielipainotteisessa sisätauti-kirurgisessa koulutusohjelmassa opiskelleiden sairaanhoidon opiskelijoiden ammatillista suullista englannin kielen taitoa. Daļai no viņiem nepatīk darbības vārdu formas, dažus skolēnus neinteresē lielo burtu lietojums, prievārdi vai frazālie darbības vārdi, bet citiem grūtības sagādā laiki un vārdu kārtība teikumā. Var būt dažādi iemesli, kāpēc skolēniem nepatīk angļu valodas gramatika. Nav šaubu, ka daži no viņiem vienkārši negrib mācīties. The word dweorg with the meaning ‘dwarf’ was certainly available in Anglo-Saxon England, as attested to by the earliest glossaries, such as those of Épinal and Erfurt, where it is used to render the Latin nanus and pumilio. OE dweorg also occurs in a group of five charms and medical recipes, where it seems to designate an ailment, characterized by a strong and sudden onset of fever. Particularly, in the remedies contained in the Medicina de quadrupedibus and in the Peri didaxeon – both translations of Latin medical treatises – OE dweorg means ‘fever’. This study addresses the little studied context of English language education in Eritrea. Despite the teaching of English as a subject and the forward-looking mother tongue policy implemented in Eritrean elementary education, Eritrean students struggle to cope with English as the medium of instruction from the start of junior school to the end of tertiary education.
