The discovery that the addictive drugs impair neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus has prompted the elaboration of new biological hypotheses to explain addiction and drug-induced cognitive dysfunction. Considerable evidence now implicates the process of adult neurogenesis in at least some critical components of hippocampal-dependent memory function. In experimental models, psychomotor stimulant drugs produce alterations in the rate of birth, survival, maturation and functional integration of adult-born hippocampal neurons. Earlier studies suggest that the memory trace for the conditioned eyeblink reflex is formed and maintained in the interpositus nucleus (IPN) in the deep cerebellar nuclei when either an auditory or visual stimulus is used as a conditioned stimulus (CS). 2. In the present study, the eyeblink reflex of the rabbit was conditioned to a somatosensory CS (an airpuff onto the back). 3. In well-trained animals, the IPN was reversibly inactivated by local cooling and the existence of the learned responses to the CS was then tested. 4. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of topical capsaicin application on human lingual mucosa and to assess if neurogenic inflammation might have a role in the pathogenesis of lingual diseases. Thirty patients (16 males and 14 females; mean age: 41.46 +/- 11.8 years; range: 23-60) were examined in our laboratory. Carbenoxolone, the succinyl ester of glycyrrhetinic acid, is an inhibitor of 11beta-hydroxy steroid dehydrogenase and gap junctional intercellular communication. It is currently used in clinical treatment of ulcer diseases. Systemic administration of carbenoxolone (1-40 mg/kg, intraperitoneally (i.p.)) was able to produce a dose-dependent decrease in DBA/2 audiogenic seizure severity score. Glycyrrhizin, an analogue of carbenoxolone inactive at the gap-junction level, was unable to affect audiogenic seizures at doses up to 30 mg/kg. Les mesures sont realisees a l'aide d'un ergometre isocinetique sur une plage de vitesses angulaires s'etalant de 120°·s −1 en excentrique a 360°·s −1 en concentrique. Les relations couple maximum/vitesse angulaire montrent que les sujets grimpeurs developpent un couple maximum plus eleve que les sujets temoins sur une plage de vitesse angulaire allant de 60°·s −1 en excentrique a 120°·s −1 en concentrique.
