New solutions for prefabricated secondary substations in the view of sustainability
2016
The secondary substations will assume an important role as “smart nodes” of the smart grid. So in few years there will be a widespread dissemination on the territory of this apparatus. Consequently, great care have to be taken not only on safety issues, but also on the constructive methodology, in order to determine low environmental impact and decommissioning cost. This paper focuses on innovative solutions for the realization of prefabricated secondary substations, in the direction of sustainability. Innovative layout and enclosure topologies have been here taken into account. In particular, by considering that the substation concrete box is, at the same time, uneconomical and with strong…
A back to back method for the temperature rise test of prefabricated substations: A case study
2015
In this work a back to back method is presented which allows to develop heating tests of prefabricated secondary substations with a limited number of supplying equipment (an induction regulator and a capacitor bank). The proposed method makes use of the transformer tap changers to create a voltage difference on the medium voltage side. In this way, only an adjunctive low voltage supply is needed. With the proposed test system, the heating tests are developed on a 1000 kVA prefabricated substation. Thanks to the experimental tests, the class of enclosure of the substation and the operating temperature and resistance of the power transformers are determined, according to the recommendations o…
Opals infiltrated with a stimuli-responsive hydrogel for ethanol vapor sensing
2013
We report on a novel class of optical materials for ethanol vapor sensing, based on polystyrene opals infiltrated with an innovative stimuli responsive hydrogel. We describe the fabrication process of the bare polystyrene opals and their subsequent infiltration. The optical characterization of the photonic crystal templates was performed to prove the good quality of the samples. Measurements on the infiltrated opals showed that the transmission spectra in the visible range strongly change at varying concentrations of ethanol vapor. The fabricated structures show a linear optical response in the visible range, for high values of ethanol concentration.
Biofabrication of 3D tumor models in cancer research
2020
Abstract Tumors are complex tissues in which cancer cells are interwoven with fibroblasts, endothelial cells, pericytes, and inflammatory cells; these cells and the extracellular matrix constitute the tumor microenvironment (TME). The TME can modulate the behavior of tumor cells in terms of capacity to invade neighboring or distant tissues and drug resistance, by secreting tumor-promoting growth factors and cytokines. The poor efficacy of many anticancer drugs in clinical trials can be partly justified by the lack of predictive preclinical models. Prior to in vivo testing, biofabrication of tools for investigation in three-dimensional (3D) could be useful. Indeed, cells grown in 3D matrices…
Dépôts carbonatés microbiens en domaine lacustre et fluviatile : fabriques et facteurs de contrôle
2020
The non-marine carbonates related to microbial activity display a large range of morphologies and compositions and accumulate in various settings (freshwater, alkaline, and saline lakes, fluvial environments, thermal and freshwater springs, …). The variety of non-marine microbial carbonates and their particularity led to propose numerous and complex terminologies and classifications, making their use complicated and restrictive for the interpretation of depositional settings. Mineralization of these carbonates results from the interaction between biotic factors (intrinsic) and environmental factors (extrinsic and external) at multi-scales. The first aim of this work was to characterize morp…
R.C. columns strengthened by PBO-FRCM under axial force and bending moment
2017
Fabric-Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) systems, also known as Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC) are nowadays widely used as confining material to enhance both strength and deformation capacity of columns of seismic resistant r.c. frames. In the past, when carbon fiber was used in the textile, experimental results showed that the efficiency of the wrapping is limited by the connection between substrate and fiber, which is not as effective as when epoxy resins are used. To improve the strength of the connection between fibres and mortar binder in FRCM system, the use of p-Phenylene BenzobisOxazole (PBO), having a molecular structure capable of establishing chemical bonds with hydrated c…
2020
Wireless technology is a key enabler of the promises of Industry 4.0 (Smart Manufacturing). As such, wireless technology will be adopted as a principal mode of communication within the factory beginning with the factory enterprise and eventually being adopted for use within the factory workcell. Factory workcell communication has particular requirements on latency, reliability, scale, and security that must first be met by the wireless communication technology used. Wireless is considered a non-ideal form of communication in that when compared to its wired counterparts, it is considered less reliable (lossy) and less secure. These possible impairments lead to delay and loss of data in indus…
Optimized substrates and measurement approaches for Raman spectroscopy of graphene nanoribbons
2019
The on-surface synthesis of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) allows for the fabrication of atomically precise narrow GNRs. Despite their exceptional properties which can be tuned by ribbon width and edge structure, significant challenges remain for GNR processing and characterization. In this contribution, we use Raman spectroscopy to characterize different types of GNRs on their growth substrate and to track their quality upon substrate transfer. We present a Raman-optimized (RO) device substrate and an optimized mapping approach that allows for acquisition of high-resolution Raman spectra, achieving enhancement factors as high as 120 with respect to signals measured on standard SiO2/Si substra…
Synthesis of Graphene Nanoribbons by Ambient-Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition and Device Integration
2016
Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), quasi-one-dimensional graphene strips, have shown great potential for nanoscale electronics, optoelectronics, and photonics. Atomically precise GNRs can be "bottom-up" synthesized by surface-assisted assembly of molecular building blocks under ultra-high-vacuum conditions. However, large-scale and efficient synthesis of such GNRs at low cost remains a significant challenge. Here we report an efficient "bottom-up" chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process for inexpensive and high-throughput growth of structurally defined GNRs with varying structures under ambient-pressure conditions. The high quality of our CVD-grown GNRs is validated by a combination of different …
