New Quasi-Atomic Nanoheterostructures: Superatoms and Excitonic Quasi-Molecules
2016
In this review, the state-of-the-art of research of artificial atoms (superatoms or quasi-atomic nanoheterostructures) and more complex nanostructures based on them—synthetic molecules is discussed, a new model of an artificial atom, which satisfactorily explains its electronic properties, is proposed, and the prospects for development of the new scientific trend are mentioned.
Biomimetic oxidation of pyrene and related aromatic hydrocarbons. Unexpected electron accepting abilities of pyrenequinones
2014
We present a mild catalytic method to oxidize PAHs and, in particular, pyrene. The pyrenediones are much better electron acceptors than benzoquinone in the gas phase and present similar accepting abilities in solution.
Ettringite surface chemistry: Interplay of electrostatic and ion specificity
2011
International audience; This paper presents a detailed experimental study combined with Monte Carlo (MC) simulations within the primitive model of the physical chemistry at the ettringite-water interface over a wide range of pH and bulk conditions for which ettringite exists thanks to its solubility in aqueous solutions. Ettringite, which is an important phase in hydrated cement-based systems, bears a permanent and positive structural charge. In contrast with previous studies, electrokinetic measurements together with the careful chemical analysis of the equilibrium solutions of the dispersions have brought strong support to designate sulfate as being the ion determining the potential. Simu…
Electrophoretic flow behaviour and mobility of colloidal fluids and crystals.
2007
We report on measurements of the electrophoretic mobility mu of charged colloidal spheres in the deionized state, where the suspensions show fluid or crystalline order. In the fluid state, parabolic flow profiles are observed due to electro-osmotic solvent flow. In the crystalline state, complex flow profiles occur due to additional crystal cohesion. The mobility mu then may inferred from the flow velocity averaged over the complete cell cross section as performed in our home built super-heterodyne Doppler velocimeter. For two particle species of 68 and 122 nm diameter we measured mu as a function of particle concentration. Starting from a plateau value at low concentration, mu decreases ap…
Prediction of friction and heat flow in machining incorporating thermophysical properties of the coating–chip interface
2004
Abstract This paper deals with an experimental and analytical investigation into the thermodynamically activated effects influencing the behaviour of the multi-layered coated tool rake face during orthogonal cutting of ferromagnetic and paramagnetic steels. Temperature measurements on the tool rake face using a thermocouple-based technique and identification of the contact zone by means of computer image processing were carried out. New methodology for assessing friction and the amount of thermal energy generated when machining with a coated tool insert with natural and restricted contact coupled with a metallic chip, using thermophysical properties of the sliding materials is developed in …
Glass Surfaces for Benefits of Daylight in Social Housing
2017
Internal environment and appropriate natural lighting of the building interior largely affects the health status and course of treatment of patients with psychiatric diagnoses such as depression, Alzheimer and disorder of functions. In particolar, this paper aims to show how smart glass surfaces, allowing the entry of natural lighting, can better support therapeutic process. It is important to elaborate knowledge for optimized lighting conditions in different healthy populations as well as in patients suffering from visual impairments and circadian rhythm disorders. To contribute to the development of new technologies about smart glass surfaces related to various aspects of light conditions…
Robotic path planning for non-destructive testing of complex shaped surfaces
2015
The requirement to increase inspection speeds for non-destructive testing (NDT) of composite aerospace parts is common to many manufacturers. The prevalence of complex curved surfaces in the industry provides significant motivation for the use of 6 axis robots for deployment of NDT probes in these inspections. A new system for robot deployed ultrasonic inspection of composite aerospace components is presented. The key novelty of the approach is through the accommodation of flexible robotic trajectory planning, coordinated with the NDT data acquisition. Using a flexible approach in MATLAB, the authors have developed a high level custom toolbox that utilizes external control of an industrial …
Structural Source of the Trap of ICT Advancement - Lessons from World ICT Top Leaders
2014
In light of the significant consequence of the trap of dramatic advancement of information and communication technology (ICT) in the global economy, both nations and firms that have been compelling their productivity decline. This resulted in great stagnation of ICT advanced economies and therefore its structural sources were analyzed. Based on an empirical analysis tracing, the trend in marginal productivity of ICT and its subsequent prices among the top ICT leaders in the world over the last two decades correlating with the effects of ICT, two faces of ICT advancement were identified. On one side, advancement of ICT contributes to its prices increase by new functionality development, its …

A tunnel magnetoresistive effect wattmeters-based wireless sensors network
2017
Abstract In the present work a wireless sensors network (WSN) for smart energy metering is presented using the ZigBee protocol as the communication link. Each network node process the electrical power by means of a Wheatstone bridge sensor based on the tunnel magnetoresistive (TMR) effect working as analogue multiplier. The electrical power is acquired and processed by a digital signal processor that extracts various parameters of interest like current and voltage load, active power and power factor by means of Fourier analysis. All the obtained electrical parameters at each node are served and shown in a web page that can be easily accessed by authorized users.
