Orbital-selective Mott transitions in a doped two-band Hubbard model with crystal field splitting

2013

We investigate the effects of crystal field splitting in a doped two-band Hubbard model with different bandwidths within dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), using a quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver. In addition to an orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP) of the narrow band, which is adiabatically connected with the well-studied OSMP in the half-filled case without crystal field splitting, we find, for sufficiently strong interaction and a suitable crystal field, also an OSMP of the wide band. We establish the phase diagram (in the absence of magnetic or orbital order) at moderate doping as a function of interaction strength and crystal field splitting and show that also the wide-band OSMP …

On Riemann’s Ideas on Space and Schwinger’s Treatment of Low-Energy Pion-Nucleon Physics

2020

We begin with a demonstration of how great an influence Riemann’s habilitation essay had on the development of field theory. His ideas about the origin of physical space and the importance of a metric field were clearly outlined as early as 1854, and praised highly by the old C.F. Gauss, who died 1 year later. There is but one formula in Riemann’s article. This formula and its relevance will be explained at the beginning of the present chapter. The basic principle which is omnipresent in Riemann’s entire work is to understand the physical behavior of nature from its smallness. Hence partial differential equations stand at the beginning of any field theory. In our case, it is not the metric …

Extracting three-body observables from finite-volume quantities

2015

Scattering and transition amplitudes with three-hadron final states play an important role in nuclear and particle physics. However, predicting such quantities using numerical Lattice QCD is very difficult, in part because of the effects of Euclidean time and finite volume. In this review we highlight recent formal developments that work towards overcoming these issues. We organize the presentation into three parts: large volume expansions, non-relativistic nonperturbative analyses, and nonperturbative studies based in relativistic field theory. In the first part we discuss results for ground state energies and matrix elements given by expanding in inverse box length, $1/L$. We describe com…

Relating the finite-volume spectrum and the two-and-three-particle S matrix for relativistic systems of identical scalar particles

2017

Working in relativistic quantum field theory, we derive the quantization condition satisfied by coupled two- and three-particle systems of identical scalar particles confined to a cubic spatial volume with periodicity $L$. This gives the relation between the finite-volume spectrum and the infinite-volume $\textbf 2 \to \textbf 2$, $\textbf 2 \to \textbf 3$ and $\textbf 3 \to \textbf 3$ scattering amplitudes for such theories. The result holds for relativistic systems composed of scalar particles with nonzero mass $m$, whose center of mass energy lies below the four-particle threshold, and for which the two-particle $K$ matrix has no singularities below the three-particle threshold. The quan…

Perturbative results for two and three particle threshold energies in finite volume

2015

We calculate the energy of the state closest to threshold for two and three identical, spinless particles confined to a cubic spatial volume with periodic boundary conditions and with zero total momentum in the finite-volume frame. The calculation is performed in relativistic quantum field theory with particles coupled via a $\lambda \phi^4$ interaction, and we work through order $\lambda^3$. The energy shifts begin at ${\cal O}(1/L^3)$, and we keep subleading terms proportional to $1/L^4$, $1/L^5$ and $1/L^6$. These terms allow a non-trivial check of the results obtained from quantization conditions that hold for arbitrary interactions, namely that of L\"uscher for two particles and our re…

Moment Equations for a Spatially Extended System of Two Competing Species

2005

The dynamics of a spatially extended system of two competing species in the presence of two noise sources is studied. A correlated dichotomous noise acts on the interaction parameter and a multiplicative white noise affects directly the dynamics of the two species. To describe the spatial distribution of the species we use a model based on Lotka-Volterra (LV) equations. By writing them in a mean field form, the corresponding moment equations for the species concentrations are obtained in Gaussian approximation. In this formalism the system dynamics is analyzed for different values of the multiplicative noise intensity. Finally by comparing these results with those obtained by direct simulat…

Energy relaxation in a? 4 with long range interactions

1995

We investigate the influence of long range interactions on the relaxation behaviour of a lattice model with an on-site potential ofϕ 4-type and “infinite” range harmonic interactions. For finite number of particlesN, it is shown that the autocorrelation functions of the fluctuations of the one-particle energiesE n(t) decays exponentially. The corresponding relaxation time τ is proportional toN and is given by τ(T, N) =Nτ0(T). The temperature dependent time scale τ0 can explicitly be related to the dynamics of a one-particle correlator of the noninteracting system. The results are derived using Mori-Zwanzig projection formalism. The corresponding memory kernel is calculated within a mode cou…

Weak Interactions and the Standard Model of Strong and Electroweak Interactions

2011

This chapter gives an introduction to the phenomenology and the theory of weak interaction processes involving leptons and hadrons. In Sects. 3.1, 3.2 we collect the most prominent and characteristic properties of weak interactions as they follow from the analysis of a set of key experiments, old and recent. The following sections 3.3–3.5 deal with the elements of non-Abelian local gauge theories in general, and with the unified theory of electroweak and strong interactions of Glashow, Salam and Weinberg (GSW), in particular.

Spin-orbit couplings within the equation-of-motion coupled-cluster framework: Theory, implementation, and benchmark calculations.

2015

We present a formalism and an implementation for calculating spin-orbit couplings (SOCs) within the EOM-CCSD (equation-of-motion coupled-cluster with single and double substitutions) approach. The following variants of EOM-CCSD are considered: EOM-CCSD for excitation energies (EOM-EE-CCSD), EOM-CCSD with spin-flip (EOM-SF-CCSD), EOM-CCSD for ionization potentials (EOM-IP-CCSD) and electron attachment (EOM-EA-CCSD). We employ a perturbative approach in which the SOCs are computed as matrix elements of the respective part of the Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian using zeroth-order non-relativistic wave functions. We follow the expectation-value approach rather than the response-theory formulation for p…
