Genetic programming through bi-objective genetic algorithms with a study of a simulated moving bed process involving multiple objectives

2013

A new bi-objective genetic programming (BioGP) technique has been developed for meta-modeling and applied in a chromatographic separation process using a simulated moving bed (SMB) process. The BioGP technique initially minimizes training error through a single objective optimization procedure and then a trade-off between complexity and accuracy is worked out through a genetic algorithm based bi-objective optimization strategy. A benefit of the BioGP approach is that an expert user or a decision maker (DM) can flexibly select the mathematical operations involved to construct a meta-model of desired complexity or accuracy. It is also designed to combat bloat - a perennial problem in genetic …

Super-fit and population size reduction in compact Differential Evolution

2011

Although Differential Evolution is an efficient and versatile optimizer, it has a wide margin of improvement. During the latest years much effort of computer scientists studying Differential Evolution has been oriented towards the improvement of the algorithmic paradigm by adding and modifying components. In particular, two modifications lead to important improvements to the original algorithmic performance. The first is the super-fit mechanism, that is the injection at the beginning of the optimization process of a solution previously improved by another algorithm. The second is the progressive reduction of the population size during the evolution of the population. Recently, the algorithm…

A Novel Model for Cybersecurity Economics and Analysis

2017

In recent times, major cybersecurity breaches and cyber fraud had huge negative impact on victim organisations. The biggest impact made on major areas of business activities. Majority of organisations facing cybersecurity adversity and advanced threats suffers from huge financial and reputation loss. The current security technologies, policies and processes are providing necessary capabilities and cybersecurity mechanism to solve cyber threats and risks. However, current solutions are not providing required mechanism for decision making on impact of cybersecurity breaches and fraud. In this paper, we are reporting initial findings and proposing conceptual solution. The paper is aiming to pr…

How news affect the trading behavior of different categories of investors in a financial market

2015

We investigate the trading behavior of a large set of single investors trading the highly liquid Nokia stock over the period 2003-2008 with the aim of determining the relative role of endogenous and exogenous factors that may affect their behavior. As endogenous factors we consider returns and volatility, whereas the exogenous factors we use are the total daily number of news and a semantic variable based on a sentiment analysis of news. Linear regression and partial correlation analysis of data show that different categories of investors are differently correlated to these factors. Governmental and non profit organizations are weakly sensitive to news and returns or volatility, and, typica…

A comparison of the discrete and dimensional models of emotion in music

2010

The primary aim of the present study was to systematically compare perceived emotions in music using two different theoretical frameworks: the discrete emotion model, and the dimensional model of affect. A secondary aim was to introduce a new, improved set of stimuli for the study of music-mediated emotions. A large pilot study established a set of 110 film music excerpts, half were moderately and highly representative examples of five discrete emotions (anger, fear, sadness, happiness and tenderness), and the other half moderate and high examples of the six extremes of three bipolar dimensions (valence, energy arousal and tension arousal). These excerpts were rated in a listening experime…

A "DUAL" MODEL OF A MASSIVE SPIN-1/2 POINT PARTICLE, AND A THEORETICAL EXPLANATION FOR THE EFFECT OF "MAXIMAL PARITY-VIOLATION"

2006

The open question left by elementary particle physics about the origin of the so-called ``maximal parity-violation'' is dealt with. It is shown that an actual theoretical answer could be found within a new relativistic quantum field formalism being a strictly covariant fermion--antifermion extension of the usual one for massive fermions. This formalism can account naturally for the effect at issue, in such a way as even to restore both parity and charge-conjugation symmetries: it spontaneously provides a true ``chiral field'' approach, which gives rise to the conjecture of a pseudoscalar (extra) charge variety anticommuting with the scalar (ordinary) one and just underlying the ``maximally …

Graffiti and Street Art Research : An Outsider Perspective

2023

In this paper we discuss our endeavours and experiences in the field of graffiti and street art research (GSAR) in the form of a dialogue. We reflect on planning and engaging with GSAR, contemplate our (field) work, analyse the methods we have developed, and shed light on the possibilities that arose during research processes. In particular, we focus on what it is like to do GSAR as outsiders, i.e. as those who are not writers or artists themselves, or who do research into a graffiti or street art scene that is foreign to them. peerReviewed

Partnership of schools and civil society organisations to support education of students of varied linguistic backgrounds—The situation in the Czech R…

2022

This article reports on research examining the intensity and forms of partnership between civil society organisations (particularly non-profit non-governmental organisations with a focus on students with a different mother tongue) and schools in three European geographical areas, answering three research questions: (1) What services do non-profits offer for teachers? (2) How do non-profits see the current cooperation? (3) Do teachers know about the existence of non-profits in this area and are they interested in such cooperation? A mixed methods research approach was used. A questionnaire was used for eliciting responses from 34 non-profit organisations (nine in Czech Republic, nineteen in …
