Are the Emotions Expressed in Music Genre-specific? An Audio-based Evaluation of Datasets Spanning Classical, Film, Pop and Mixed Genres

2011

Abstract Empirical studies of emotions in music have described therole of individual musical features in recognizing particular emotions. However, no attempts have been made as yet to establish if there is a link between particular emotions and a specific genre. Here this is investigated byanalysing nine separate datasets that represent categories ranging from classical (three sets), and film music (two), to popular music (two), and mixed genre (two). Atotal of 39 musical features were extracted from the audio. Models were then constructed from theseto explain self-reports of valence and arousal, by using multiple andRandom Forest regression. The models were fully validated across the datas…

Bacterial adhesion on fissure sealants: Effects of exposure to acidic drink

2018

Background Adherence of bacteria to teeth surface is considered an important step in the development of caries and the use of fissure sealants is crucial for the prevention of caries in occlusal surfaces of molars and premolars. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the adherence of Streptococcus mutans to different fissure sealants, after acidic drink exposure. Material and Methods The tested materials were Fissurit, Fissurit FX, Grandio Seal, Fuji Triage, Constic. Bacterial suspension was deposited onto each material and the adhesion was evaluated trough the colony forming units (CFUs) determination with or without acidic drink exposure. Results The tested materials showed …

In murine 3T3 fibroblasts, different second messenger pathways resulting in the induction of NO synthase II (iNOS) converge in the activation of tran…

1996

Transcription factor NF-kappaB is essential for the induction of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) II (iNOS) by bacterial lipopolysaccharide in murine macrophages (Xie, Q. W., Kashiwabara, Y., and Nathan, C. (1994) J. Biol. Chem. 269, 4705-4708). In 3T3 fibroblasts, agents other than cytokines are efficacious inducers of NOS II expression. In addition to cytokines such as interferon-gamma or tumor necrosis factor-alpha, protein kinase C-stimulating agents such as tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate, or cyclic AMP-elevating agents such as forskolin and 8-bromo-cAMP markedly increased NOS II mRNA (measured by Sl nuclease and RNase protection analyses), NOS II protein (determined by Western blotting), a…

Bleomycin Exerts Ambivalent Antitumor Immune Effect by Triggering Both Immunogenic Cell Death and Proliferation of Regulatory T Cells

2013

International audience; Bleomycin (BLM) is an anticancer drug currently used for the treatment of testis cancer and Hodgkin lymphoma. This drug triggers cancer cell death via its capacity to generate radical oxygen species (ROS). However, the putative contribution of anticancer immune responses to the efficacy of BLM has not been evaluated. We make here the observation that BLM induces immunogenic cell death. In particular, BLM is able to induce ROS-mediated reticulum stress and autophagy, which result in the surface exposure of chaperones, including calreticulin and ERp57, and liberation of HMBG1 and ATP. BLM induces anti-tumor immunity which relies on calreticulin, CD8(+) T cells and inte…

La dictadura del cuerpo: el cuerpo como objeto de propaganda

2014

ABSTRACT Body of athletes has been settled as a modern icon in the same movement that has settled the sport man into hero. But we can find the strategies to transform it into a deity or a product of marketing in such an old film as Olympia (1938), audiovisual discourse about Olympic Games of Berlin. It is also considered as one of the main examples of propaganda in modern cinema. We suggest a comparative analysis that confronts Olympia with First (2012), last official olimpic film distributed, where we can discover the propagandistic possibilities and the consequences of this visual strategies. Analysis proposes to study if the common places and strategies are not only form coincidences bet…

NO ME PERMITE TERMINAR DE INCLUIR EL RESUMEN EnglishImages can be a point of influence for the creation of other images, stories or characters. This is true of the mythical …

Music and Emotion: Empirical and Theoretical Perspectives

2014

One of the key reasons people engage with music, whether as listener or performer, therapist or researcher, is because of its emotional impact. Music comforts us when we’re sad, lifts us up in happier times, bonds us together. We use music to modify our mood, augment current feelings, release tension. Given the ever-growing presence of music in our everyday lives, the investigation of issues related to and subsequent dissemination of knowledge concerning music and emotion is becoming increasingly relevant. This special issue is based on work presented at the 3rd International Conference on Music & Emotion (ICME3) organised by the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Interdisciplinary Music Resea…

Tracing multisensory food experiences on Twitter

2021

How a food, or a dish, is named and how its components and attributes are described can all influence the perception and the enjoyment of the food. Therefore, tracing patterns in food descriptions and determining their role can be of value. The aims of this study were the following: (1) to describe the multisensory food experience as represented in microblog entries concerning food and drink on Twitter, (2) to provide an overview of the changes in the above-mentioned food representations during the period 2011‐20, and (3) to contribute to a broader understanding of the human‐food relationship as reflected on social media ‐ in this case Twitter ‐ and outline its potential utility for the res…
