Improvement of dry eye symptoms with polyunsaturated fatty acids

International audience; Purpose: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are involved in inflammatory pathways via prostaglandins. Conjunctival inflammation is a hallmark of all dry eye syndromes. We investigated the role of dietary n–6 and n–3 fatty acids in patients suffering from ocular dryness with peculiar attention to inflammatory markers. Methods: 70 patients presenting with mild to moderate dry eye syndromes were randomly assigned to Nutrilarm® or placebo pills, thrice a day for 6 months. Creation of a food taste database using an in-home "taste" profile method

International audience; The purpose of this study was to create a food 'taste' database using an innovative in-home profile method. The five basic tastes and fat sensation were studied. The proposed method consisted in an intensive training in laboratory (55 h, 5 months) immediately followed by an in-home measurements phase (8 months) during which 12 trained panelists had to evaluate the five tastes and fat sensation of the foods they typically consumed. The rating scales were inspired by scales used in the Spectrum (TM) method. As soon as the end of gestation, the gustatory system is stimulated by the taste-active compounds carried by the amniotic fluid and its maturation continues until mid-childhood. Facial expressions and relative ingestion methods show that the newborn can discriminate the various taste qualities (bitter, salty, sour, sweet and umami). The range of individual responses is wide. Neonatal reactions to sweet and umami are generally considered to express pleasure. The bitter and sour stimulations lead to hedonically negative reactions. High Speed Stereovision Setup for Position and Motion Estimation of Fertilizer Particles Leaving a Centrifugal Spreader

EA SPE GEAPSI; International audience; A 3D imaging technique using a high speed binocular stereovision system was developed in combination with corresponding image processing algorithms for accurate determination of the parameters of particles leaving the spinning disks of centrifugal fertilizer spreaders. Validation of the stereo-matching algorithm using a virtual 3D stereovision simulator indicated an error of less than 2 pixels for 90% of the particles. The setup was validated using the cylindrical spread pattern of an experimental spreader. Membrane bioreactor (MBR) models are useful tools for both design and management. The system complexity is high due to the involved number of processes which can be clustered in biological and physical ones. Literature studies are present and need to be harmonized in order to gain insights from the different studies and allow system optimization by applying a control. Membrane fluidity of stressed cells of Oenococcus oeni

International audience; The determination of membrane fluidity in whole cells of Oenococcus oeni was achieved by membrane probe 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene fluorescence anisotropy measurements. The results demonstrated instantaneous fluidity variations with cells directly stressed during the measure. Heat (42°C) or acid (pH 3.2) shocks decreased the anisotropy values (fluidising effects), whereas an ethanol shock (10% ethanol, v/v) increased the membrane rigidity. The velocities of fluidity variation with non-adapted or adapted cells (incubation in inhibitory growth conditions) were compared.
