Between the Darkness of Barbarism and the Light of Civilization: British Images of the Finn in the Late Eighteenth Century

2014

This article aims to show that it was the British travellers (Coxe, Tooke, Clarke,et al.) to Finland in the late eighteenth century who discovered Finland for theBritish reading public. As they distinguished the Finns as a separate ‘race’ fromthe Russians, the Swedes, and the Lapps, they contributed to the proto-racialistimage of them that would become popular in the nineteenth century. BecauseSweden had become an important maritime trading partner (in iron ore, tar, andtimber) to the British, its eastern part, Finland, also became an interesting countryto visit en route from Stockholm to Saint Petersburg (or from Saint Petersburgto Stockholm). The travellers were astonished to realize that…

Research on the history of Scandinavian summer and seaside tourism – transnational and transregional perspectives?

2013

The purpose of this article is to investigate important research on the history of Scandinavian tourism conducted between the 1980s and the present. More specifically, it deals with research on summer and seaside tourism history in the Skagerrak–Kattegat and some parts of the North Sea region (southeastern Norway, Bohuslan in southwestern Sweden, and Jutland in western Denmark) from the late 1800s through the twentieth century. Although the publications chosen for this historiographical analysis are primarily anthologies and articles in scholarly reports, some monographs have been included as well. The ensuing discussion includes reflections on how the selected geographical spaces may have …

Mudarrisūn e muḥaddiṯūn a Damasco negli awāmir sulṭāniyyah (1876-1908)

2014

The Center for Historical Documentation of Damascus, which was founded in 1960, houses a relevant variety of first-hand sources dating back to the Ottoman period, which prove to be fundamental in order to better define some peculiar aspects of history of Bilād al-Šām, such as the role of ʿulamāʾ and transmission of knowledge. As far as this is concerned, the awāmir sulṭāniyyah represent an essential part of the documentation, not only for the number of biographical data about mudarrisūn and muḥadditūn who were living and teaching in Damascus, but also for the particular relationship that they established with the main cultural institutions of the city, such as the traditional madāris. Throu…

Capitanes del Renacimiento. Ética militar en la España mediterránea, c. 1500-1550

2004

In Sixteenth Century Europe, the chivalric values which were in the core of military aristocracy ethics became enriched with court-like ideals. In this paper we study the diffusion of those ideals among army officers of the Hispanic Monarchy in the various…

Dactylogyrus (Monogenea) communities on the gills of roach in three lakes in Central Finland

1992

SUMMARYDactylogyrus (Monogenea) species were studied on the gills of roach (Rutilus rutilus) from a total of 293 fish in 3 interconnected lakes in Central Finland. One of the lakes is eutrophic and polluted by a paper and pulp mill, one is eutrophic and one is oligotrophic. Nine Dactylogyrus species were found. The structure of the monogenean communities was analysed at the component and infracommunity level and the Dactylogyrus fauna of the lakes was compared. Although it was found that the component communities tended to be very similar there were also differences. The abundance and diversity were highest in the polluted lake; the infracommunities of this lake were considerably more often…

Dactylogyrus (Monogenea) infections on the gills of roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) experimentally exposed to pulp and paper mill effluent

1997

Experimental exposure to bleached kraft pulp and paper mill effluent (BKME) at a concentration of 10% significantly reduced the abundance and mean number of species of Dactylogyrus on the gills of naturally infected roach, Rutilus rutilus, over a 3 week period. Seven Dactylogyrus species were recorded which differed widely in their susceptibility to the effluent. The experiment coincided with a natural spring peak in dactylogyrid infections on roach. BMKE exposure did not prevent parasite reproduction but post-larval abundance was significantly higher on control than effluent-exposed hosts. There was no evidence of a BKME-induced shift in microhabitat distribution of dactylogyrids. Elevated…
