Family-student balance: a qualitative study about limitations of university mothers
2016
The balance between family and student life, viewed as the possibility of being a mother and university student at the same time, is still not seen as something usual in higher education. This leads to discrimination against student mothers compared with other students. In this study, using a qualitative, narrative-based methodology based on semi-structured interviews, we analysed the beliefs and attitudes of a total of 73 university students. They reflect on aspects of the academic career that restrict the student-family balance. The students’ opinions revealed the limitations on the possibilities of having children, included some proposals for improvements to the legislation, and their at…
Integración: una cuestión de derechos
2010
This article achieves a comparative analysis between the Citizenship and Integration Programme (2007-2010) and the spanish Migration Bill Project. Firstly, it aims to analyze whether the concept of integration, as it was introduced as a general principle within the Migration Bill, is consistent with the concept of the Programme. Secondly, it is about to examine how the notion of integration affects some of the provisions, which are introduced by the law reform, especially on fundamental rights. Finally, this leads to assess the implications and strains between migration control policies and integration policies about migrants’.
Diversity, Music and Social and Civic Competence: contributions of musical experience
2014
Educational legislation is obliged to ensure the curriculum is adapted to enable the full development of the necessary basic skills. Teachers have to differentiate pupils’ curricula according to their cognitive, cultural and social constraints, so that each individual can develop into a socially competent citizen. This article describes how musical experience is affordable, effective and motivating for pupils included classed as requiring “attention to diversity,” and how it can contribute to this group’s acquisition of social and civic competences. In attention to diversity, music in has a vital role in primary schools, boosting self-esteem, independence, initiative, and contributing to th…
From Complement to Motor: The Changing Role of Leisure and Tourism in Local Development Strategies. The Case of the Recovery and Valorisation of Cult…
2012
In the Fordist society, the productive activity focused development strategies, considering the role of leisure and tourism as “complementary” productive activities. The consolidation of post-productivism since the decade of 1990s has caused profound changes in individual and collective values and priorities. These have seen the introduction of a radically different conception about the role of leisure and tourism in the vital programming and, consequently, in the strategies of companies, organisations and governments. This paper provides a discussion of the principles of local development and the, more and more, central function of leisure and tourism in regional development strategies, th…

El proyecto europeo y la ciudadanía para los inmigrantes
2005
The European Constitutional Treaty which is going to be ratified these days offers a concept of European citizenship which disappoints the expectations to find a way for an integration of the resident immigrants or for any kind of political accommodation. In the light of the European framework and of the doctrinal debate, the proposal of a model of inclusive, plural and gradual citizenship will be examined, a citizenship which starts off with the notion of neighbourhood based on the continuous residence, followed by an analysis of the objections of those criticizing these proposals as a process of domestication.
Neurophilosophy in Zubiri’s perspective?
2016
The current intellectual situation is characterized by the vigour of neurophilosophy, founded on the new data of the neurosciences, in an attempt to replace traditional philosophical methods by the method of natural sciences. My aim is to show that Zubiri’s philosophy, which is also associated with the natural sciences, is a successful alternative to the pseudo-scientific and reductionist neurophilosophy, because his Noology is intrinsically connected to Neurobiology, especially through the concepts of formality and formalization, which are the basis for grounding a new conception of intelligence and reality.
